"I'm sorry?" Jay asked. Where did the female customer know herself, have they ever met?
"You're similar to the Asian drama actors I watch every day."
Jay breathed a sigh of relief. He thought he was almost caught out about his true identity.
"Asian Dorm?" Jay asked again.
The female customer nodded enthusiastically, most of the citizens of Asia Town were native Asians.
"Yes, you know what, right? Even though we all live in America, we still watch Asian television shows."
"Oh.. That, I don't know. I don't have a television" Jay said.
"Oh my goodness, really? You can watch television at my house—"
"He was busy helping me out at the tavern, he couldn't watch television in your house!" aunt Kim interjected, somewhat annoyed with Jay's flirtatious customers.
"Come on, Aunt Kim. He could stop by my house after coming home from the store. Right?" The young woman glanced. "This is my address, you can come by anytime." He handed Jay a piece of paper with his full address.
The man simply nodded and kept the paper in his pants pocket.
After the store closed, Aunt Kim and Jay cleaned up the place before returning home. Visitors are getting crowded by the day. It seems that Jay's charm attracts young women in the mostly Asian city.
"Aunt Kim, I've tidied up the whole table. Can I go first?" ask Jay.
"Jay, you don't intend to watch television at the woman's house, do you?"
Jay shakes. "No. Why do you think so?"
"I saw you keep that paper in your pants pocket" said Aunt Kim.
Jay smiled, then took out the paper and threw it in the trash.
"I'm just trying to be polite. There's no way I'm throwing it out in front of the woman" Jay replied.
"Then where are you going? Why does it look rushed?" ask Aunt Kim again.
"I'm going to pick up Noah" Jay replied.
Aunt Kim was stunned when she heard that answer. Many things that make him suspicious of Jay's kindness to Dara and Noah, may Jay have feelings for Dara.
"Dara said she was very busy starting today. She was afraid she was late to pick up Noah, so she asked me for help. So that Noah does not wait too long," explained Jay.
Aunt Kim nodded in understanding. Noah is now entrusted to a special pre-school place for Asian children. It's been open ever since Betrice closed. There were more children there and the number of caregivers was adequate. Noah also seems comfortable in his new environment.
"Good afternoon, Aunt Kim. See you in the morning" said Jay. The man then rushed to the daycare.
The place was more or less located a few blocks after the previous daycare. Today was the first time Jay had been there to pick up Noah.
"I'm sorry, I wanted to pick up a kid named Noah" Jay told one of the nannies who greeted him. The babysitters there are all Asian women.
"Are you Noah's father?" ask the nanny. Jay was silent for a while, to be honest he was confused as to what to answer.
"Yes..." The words just escaped from his mouth. I don't know why his heart was pounding after saying that.
The babysitter then takes Noah out to meet with Jay. The fat toddler looked excited when he saw Jay there.
"Gee... Apparently Noah was very happy when picked up by his father, yes," said the worried founder. He then handed Noah over to Jay.
"Gee...Mommy has also arrived" said the nanny.
Jay who heard this turned his head. He found Dara walking with her face approaching.
"Noah... Mommy misses you." Dara kissed the puffed cheeks of the son who is currently in Jay's arms.
"You're both a very suitable couple" the nanny praised.
Both Jay and Dara, both of them just smiled awkwardly.
...ΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩ...
As usual, when Jay and Dara took turns to take a bath and take care of Noah, they also ate together like a happy little family. After doing the routine, Dara usually cradle Noah to sleep.
Jay was sitting on the back porch and busy looking at the stars, Dara who had just come out of the room was sitting up to Jay.
"What meda?" ask Dara.
"Counting stars," answered Jay innocently.
Dara laughed softly. "Why do that?" tanyakanya.
Jay squinted his eyes, then glared away. "I don't know much about you, so I looked up at the sky. Maybe God will give you the answer" said Jay.
Dara smiled, she did not know where this conversation would lead.
"I don't know much about you either" Dara replied.
"I would probably love to tell my life story, but I hate those memories, too." Jay began to remember his past. "Twenty years ago, we all had a crisis. Many of our people have decided to become immigrants in America. My family and I are one of them."
"I'm surprised to learn that you've been here for twenty years. Because I have never felt the crisis that you experienced, so do not know how difficult those times were," replied Dara.
"My family was affected by the economic crisis of that time and one day my father decided to bring his family to America. But the day before departure, my father died of a riot in our town." Jay sighed, still remembering how dark the day was. "Finally, only my mother and I could leave on a very full ferry. I think everything will be fine while I still have a mother. But then the unexpected happened again. My mom had a heart attack there. At that time we were still on the sea, even on the ship there was no medical personnel. It made my mother unsaved. Because he was dead and the ship that greatly exceeded the load, finally my mother's body was thrown into the sea."
"Jay, I'm sorry if I made you open an old wound" Dara said. The woman felt bad.
"It's okay. I've remembered the incident over and over again in decades, I'm used to it." Jay looked at Dara. " What about you?" ask Jay.
"I haven't moved here in five years" replied Dara. He never told me why he lived in America before. But because Jay had told me first, he decided to do the same.
"I just graduated from university. Then I met a man I loved. We have the same vision. Long story short, we got married. My late husband invited me to move from the Philippines to America to live a better life. But, things didn't go according to plan. He's getting sick, so I'm the one who has to make a living here. He died a few days before Noah was born. That's why Noah hasn't known a father figure since he was born."
"You're great to get through this" Jay said.
"Yes, you're better too." Dara glanced at Jay. The man was busy looking up at the sky. Is that the sky tonight? Dara followed Jay's point of view. Yes, he felt calm just by watching the twinkling in the sky.
"God really gives the answer. We already know about each other's way of life." Jay mutters.
"Yes. I'm glad I found out" replied Dara.
The two of them turned to each other until accidentally, their pair of eyes looked at each other. No matter what happens, the strong gravitational force seems to pull Jay on Dara. Without control, Jay suddenly kisses Dara's lips. The woman was petrified, something felt twitching inside her. That brief kiss made the sweat flow smoothly on Jay's back.
The man knew what he was doing was crazy. Realizing that it was a mistake, Jay apologized.
"Ma-sorry, I'm so presumptuous. You can slap me right there," Jay panicked.
A slap slowly landed on his left cheek. But after that, Dara's ranum lips landed on the cheeks.
