*2003: One and a Half Hours later*
This is where I am at the moment. In front of a large mirror so that it can show the reflection of my entire body from the tip of the hair to the tip of the foot.
Don't ask me how I look in front of that mirror. I am a beautiful woman who looks sad.
If other women would choose to wear a dress patterned flowers or a plain dress brightly colored to welcome her future husband, then my appearance is arguably quite anti-mainstream at that time. I wore a plain black dress for a two-family meeting, in the morning.
I did it intentionally. To make myself look like a girl who would go to a funeral rather than to a funeral, so that I could make that family of men sensitive enough, that I did not want an arranged marriage.
Fortunately, I managed to persuade Mommy and Daddy to leave first. They certainly didn't have the chance to comment on my appearance.
Don't ask, why do they believe so much that I won't run away? Of course because they knew that from the beginning I never had the guts to make my parents embarrassed and hurt. Including the reason that I wanted to prepare longer so that I could perform as much as possible, they also let me drive my own car to the restaurant that was determined.
--------------
Thirty minutes drive from home to the agreed place. Before I got out of my new Volkswagen Beetle, I looked back at my face in a mirror and breathed as much as I could.
Really, I was expecting a miracle. I still hope this match will not continue. But the real world is the real world. It rarely works wonders, because it seems that he is more interested in surprises.
Just as I opened the car door and was about to walk into the restaurant, a call appeared on my phone screen. For a moment I stopped my steps and read the name of the caller.
"Indra" I said in my heart.
📞 'Hello?' (I)
📞 'Hi, B! Sory, am I disturbing you?' (Indra)
📞 'No.. No.. No... I am free.' (I)
📞 'B, I need your help. I really need your help. (Indra)
📞 'Help?' (I)
📞 'Franda suddenly got chickenpox and I don't have a partner to dance with me tonight. I've already received the down payment and I can't possibly cancel everything now.' (Indra)
📞 'So?' (I)
📞 'Please be my partner, B!' (Indra)
📞 'Ndra, do you know that I can't fill anyone's party? If Daddy finds out I'm dancing at someone else's party, then he can keep me from dancing for life.' (I)
📞 'I know B, but I don't have another choice. B, I promise that people won't know. You can wear a mask. This is Tango, we're dancing Sway. Please be, or they will hang me. You're the only one who's ever coached that song except Franda with me. (Indra)
📞 '................' (I)
📞 'B?' (Indra)
📞 'Fine! Send me the address and the exact hour.' (I)
📞 'Ooohh, thank you my dear. You're the best.' (Indra)
📞 'You know what? I never give anything away for free, Indra.' (I)
📞 'Sure! I also don't intend to take it for granted, sweetheart. I'll treat you to dinner, after we're done performing on the show.' (Indra)
📞 'Promise is debt, Indra.' (I)
📞 'My life is his guarantee. Bye, B! I'll see you tonnage. (Indra)
Tut's.. Tut's.. Tut's..
Our call has been cut off. And the man I loved sounded happy when I accepted his request.
Without me knowing I was smiling. Yes, hearing her happy voice alone, can make my heart float. I was really satisfied to be able to help her this time. In fact, I know how big the risk is, if until Daddy finds out that I'm dancing in public.
"Geez, Bellatrix! What are you doing standing there smiling to yourself?" Mommy's soprano voice rang out breaking my daydream.
"Come on! You've been waiting for," he continued. The middle-aged woman seemed to be agitated because I did not come, so she intended to wait for me in the restaurant lobby.
"Well....." I breathed my breath rough. Welcome to the real world.
"Yes, Mom!" I answered while rolling my eyeballs.
Mommy and I then walked hurriedly into the restaurant. Once felt relieved because I thought panic made Mommy unaware of my appearance, in fact I was wrong.
"What's wrong with your shirt? Did Bik Well, forget to wash clothes until you put on a black dress to this place?" Mommy is back chattering and I will, as usual, pretend to be stupid in front of her.
We continued walking until we arrived at the reserved table. I saw Daddy, a middle-aged woman, and a man already sitting quietly there.
"Sorry, Cheng. Long huh? This is my daughter, too long in the car. I'm sure I want to meet the candidate." This dear Mommy is really embarrassing me now.
"Eh, don't you, Auntie. Someone called me earlier, so I was a little late. I'm sorry, I've made a wait," I said, bowing my head slightly.
I looked at his face for a while. That guy's handsome. No-no, errata. So good-looking. But I hate his attitude. Especially the way he looks at me. He looks like an...... Player.
"Honey already. Its alright. Come on, sit down first," replied the typical Javanese-sungled woman with a kebaya, who was most likely my future mother-in-law.
I immediately took my seat and sat down. I don't know why I felt so creepy. Someone with sharp eyes had been watching me. All my movements seemed not to escape the sight of his eyes. And that person was the one who insinuated me earlier.
I who felt uncomfortable then looked back at him with the same sharp eyes. Our eyes met long enough that no one had any intention of giving in, until my gaze turned to a man who had just come to our table and greeted me kindly.
"Hello, sorry I'm late. Have I made everyone wait?" I blinked my eyes a few times. Another man who was also handsome, although not as handsome as the lewd-faced man earlier. It's just that this one looks more like a human.
"Eh, Mama's son has arrived. Sit Hen!" The bearded aunt welcomed her son with pleasure.
Looking at the expression of the bearded Aunt, I believe that the man called 'Hen' is the man I will be betrothed to. I still believe in Mommy's little heart that can't possibly give me to a man so-so, a man who doesn't know how to protect his woman.
And this 'Hen', gives a good first impression. But, wait a minute. Why now does my heart sound like it approves of this matchmaking huh?
"Good! Because everyone has come. I think we're just starting to eat the next morning." I saw Daddy open the conversation.
"Yes, we can get acquainted while eating." The aunt added.
I have no intention at all to speak. I'm actually not comfortable here. Even if Mommy chose that friendly man to be my soul mate, I still have my own white riding prince. Speaking of the white riding prince, ah, I really can't wait to dance with him tonight.
Light talk among parents continues. I choose to enjoy the food in front of me. I was still trying to focus on my dishes even though I knew the pervert was still faithfully staring at me sharply from earlier. I really feel like I'm stripped. However, I won't respond to it this time. I can't be hooked.
"So, Bellatrix...." I heard the aunt call my name.
"Hey-yes Aunt?" I'm a little clumsy now.
"Tante Rita is sure Mommy and your Daddy told her what our breakfast was about. Sorry, it's actually better if we plan a dinner to introduce you. But, because the Auntie child has an event later tonight, we will meet this morning," he explained again while cutting the food in front of him into several parts, before the food entered his mouth.
"I-yes, it's okay Auntie." I smiled in response to the woman.
"Bellatrix, maybe before the aunt introduced who your soul mate, it's good for you and Aunt son to get an explanation why this matchmaking must occur, because actually the son of Aunt also still rejects this plan, even if he's sitting between us." I saw Aunt Rita talking while glancing over to her son's seat, though it was unclear which one she was lyricizing.
"Ma, actually don't go straight to matchmaking. Sorry, Om and Aunt Atmaja. I think in a year like this, the idea of matchmaking is less relevant. Why don't you give yourself time to get to know each other first?" The friendly man tried to explain.
I smiled involuntarily for a moment after hearing the conversation of Aunt Rita and her son. That smile just appeared for two reasons. First, really, I can't deny that I like the attitude of Aunt Rita who speaks for what it is. Second, with this openness, I got a breath of fresh air because the friendly man turned out to also reject this crazy matchmaking idea.
"Thank God because I'm not alone" I murmured inwardly.
"Ma..." The friendly man tried again.
"Shut up Hendra! Let Mama finish talking." Aunty Rita who had been soft-spoken now began to raise her tone. The man then chose silence.
"Sorry, Bellatrix. Auntie is not unaware that these ways sound ridiculous to young people like you. But Om's death reveals that Aunt cannot live forever." The eyes of the middle-aged woman turned heartily.
"Tante just wants to complete the task of Aunt in becoming a Mother and by completing the task, then the task of Aunt as a CEO of the company can also end Auntie." Aunt Rita took a deep breath.
"There is one more child that has not been married and it is like a burden for this old woman. It was all because of the message of the late Aunt husband who wanted that the new Aunt could stop managing the company if all our children were married." I noticed the woman was breathing heavily again.
"Dear, it just so happens that Mommy and Daddy also want you to get married soon. That's why we agreed to match you. B, you're our only daughter and we certainly want the best for you" Mommy added gently.
"Bellatrix, Aunt believes you and Auntie's child will be happy, because your marriage will not only produce brilliant offspring but also can make our family stronger." I stared at the face of Tanter Rita wryly.
The family? Maybe it's the current subtle language to replace the word company.
"So, how? You agree, don't you, baby?" That question really made all eyes instantly turn to me. While I, I don't know! If only I had the ability to disappear, then maybe that's what I'll do now.
I still looked at Aunt Rita's face doubtfully. Along with that, I felt my tongue become mute. I know I can't hurt my parents, but it still feels hard to say 'yes'.
"Is everything to be decided at this meeting, Ma? Can't parents give their children time to think?" I heard the pervert make his voice again. But this time he sounded more sane.
Not a chance, Aunt Rita gave an answer, suddenly I heard someone interrupt this tense conversation," Ma, sorry. I gotta go home. Karina fever. I've got to get him to the hospital."
I frowned at me. Karina, who is she?
"God! Yes already. Quickly take my grandson to the doctor. Tell your wife after the Aditya and Bellatrix events are over, mama will follow," Aunt Rita replied gently. The man immediately left without saying goodbye again because he was too panicked
But, wait-wait.......
A granddaughter? Wife?
So the friendly man.... already... married? Then... Who will be betrothed to me?
Did Aunt Rita say, Aditya and Bella? That friendly guy's name, isn't it Hendra? So, who is Aditya? Oh, myGod... Don't say that.....
