You're Not a Figurant
[POV Alex] Ch 2 - Operation Result

The operation was carried out for several hours. All families are filled with confusion. A sad and tired face seemed to fill all the faces there.

I persuaded her to rest, but she insisted on waiting for the operation to be completed. I did that to Diana, too, but again I got rejected. The woman did the same.

After thirteen hours of waiting, finally the operating signal light was turned off. Signs the operation is complete. A few seconds later, a doctor came out of the room. I immediately approached the doctor who looked like the head of the team.

"Is there a guardian for the patient?" tanyakanya.

"I'm Doc. I'm his sister." I said firmly. Diana, mom and dad are approaching.

"I'm Dok's Mom. W-how's my son's condition? Wh-is he okay? Wh-what was the operation successful?"

"I'm her fiance! W-how is Brother Aaron's condition? How's he Doc?" Diana and Mama immediately contacted the doctor. Holding the doctor's arm, urging him to answer questions.

The doctor looked at us one by one. He can judge the worries that arise on our faces. Then the doctor's eyes lingered on me.

"With whose Father?" tanyakanya.

"I'm Alex Doc."

"Well Mr Alex, can I talk to you?"

"Can Doc."

"Please come to my room." The doctor walked ahead of me, ignoring the whining of mama or Diana who seemed very curious about Aaron's condition. I walked after the doctor, before my hand was finally pulled by my mother.

"Mama's coming with Al, Mama wants to know his condition. Take Mama to Al..." I looked at my mother's face with concern. A mother's face is deeply worried about her son. A face that seemed to say that he was willing if his life was to be exchanged for the life of his son.

"Mama is here. Friends Diana. The doctor just wanted to talk to me. I'm sure Aaron's condition will be fine. Mama, don't worry, yeah," I wiped the tears that came out of my mama's face. I want to hug and strengthen the woman.

At first my mother insisted on following me, but after my father persuaded her he finally relented and allowed me to meet with the doctor.

I entered the doctor's room I knew named Arya. A surgeon specialist.

Geck... Geck... Geck... I knocked on the door.

"Please enter Mr. Alex. Please sit down." Doctor Arya invited me to sit down. He's a guy who's in his early 40s. His face looked flat and calm, yet I could catch the look of worry on his face, even though he was trying to hide it.

"How's my brother Doc doing?" ask me without further ado. I have intuition, Aaron's condition is not good. In response to my question, a small wry smile fell on her lips.

"Do you know why I want to talk to you?" tanyakanya. I shook my head. Doctor Arya continued, "Because I rate you is the calmest among the rest." I was silent, listening.

Doctor Arya took a deep breath before continuing. "We have done it as much as possible. We engaged nineteen doctors and other medical personnel for this operation. But the condition of the patient when brought here is already very severe..."

"I never said that this operation failed, but I also gave no indication that it was successful." Doctor Arya was silent for a moment, taking a deep breath before continuing, "Look Alex, at the time of being brought here the patient had bleeding in the head, a broken sternum and a broken right leg. We did an MRI scan and decided to divide the team into three. There are no problems with a broken right leg or breastbone. There are no bone fractures that harm important organs. The two operations can be said to be successful. But the problem occurred when our team performed a craniotomy (brain surgery procedure)."

"The hard impact caused the skull bones to break, so we did this surgery. We thought this injury was only due to a hematoma (a blood clot), or a contusion (a bruise to the brain). But in fact the patient has diffuse (severe brain injury, where damage occurs in almost all parts of the brain). We've been trying to address this issue through surgical procedures. That said, the operation went well. No unexpected events are holding us back. However, we cannot state that the operation was successful. Given that the brain injury suffered by the patient is very severe, then there are three possibilities."

I fell silent, trying to calmly listen to all the explanations of Doctor Arya. Then the doctor continued.

"The first, the patient will regain consciousness by suffering from disability, the second he will experience a vegetative phase (can be interpreted as a coma) and the third is death. I hope you understand it and give this understanding to the extended family..."

My throat feels dry. I tried to swallow, but it was very difficult. My tongue suddenly became muddy. I have many questions to ask, but my lips cannot be moved.

Doctor Arya was still talking. Explaining Aaron's condition at length, but I was only able to capture a small part of his conversation. My brain stopped thinking when it knew of the possibility.

"Is-is there any chance he'll make a full recovery?" with a stammer I asked a question.

"That's a very small possibility, Alex. Less than 5%. Even if the patient regains consciousness, there's a chance he'll have a permanent disability." Doctor Arya sighed for a moment, she smiled blandly, "Be wise in delivering this news. I don't think the mother and the young woman will be able to hear it. For now, that's all I can say. Any other questions?"

I want to ask you a lot of things. If necessary I want to blame the doctor for the performance of his medical team is less than optimal. Why can't they cure Aaron 100%?!! Why only 5%?! Why?! I want to blame the whole world!! For the first time I regretted rejecting my parents' desire to become a doctor.

I came out of that room. Step like a lifeless zombie. Without even realizing the steps leading me to the toilet. I entered the room and started crying there.

"Aarrayghhh!! Aharrrghhh!! You idiot!! Br*chl!! Why not just die!! Brother br*ngsek!! I like to take care of people!!"

BUUKO... BUUKK... BUUKK...

I hit my hand on the wall. I don't care if my hands bleed. I just want to express this emotion. Imagining Aaron having to be disabled, being in the vegetative phase or even dying made my feelings of sadness overwhelming. I cannot bear this sorrow.

"Br*ngsek base!! No use!! Aharrrghhh!! Cured br*ngsek!! Br*have!!" My mouth chided her, but my body said something else. Tears flowed down my cheeks. While my body trembled withstanding the sadness.

Almost an hour I was in the bathroom in a half-crazy position. Sometimes I curse and scold him, but at other times I beg for his recovery. That phase changed several times. My heart is finally ready to accept all of those possibilities.

I came out of the toilet. Washing my messy face with cold water. Moisten my head, and try to smile in front of the mirror.

I have to be strong. I cannot be weak. There are two fragile women who need my strength. I have to be strong, in order to be a backstop for them.

I came out of the room trying to put a smile on my face. Prepare to give false news.
