A few days during a vacation to South Korea - I can only take the time to meet Mahendra on the sidelines of his break. Mahendra who first came to this country seems to have been able to adjust to food and language - whereas I who only had a few days still have to adjust to food and all things in the country these.
It just so happens that today Mahendra is duty-free and this man intends to take me around the city of Seoul with him. Mahendra had wanted to book a hotel tour facility to make it easier for us to visit places that were already on our list of visits that I deliberately made. But I asked him to cancel the order - it felt more free to enjoy the holiday atmosphere by utilizing the public facilities available. Incidentally I have read many references to the experiences of people who travel to this country - and I have installed several applications to facilitate my journey.
Fortunately Mahendra did not object to my advice.
Our first destination today was Nami Island - I don't know I'm still obsessed with some romantic places like those shown in Korean movies. Incidentally from the location we stayed there was a shuttle bus that would take us to Nami Island. The island is located in Chuncheon which is 63 kilometers from Seoul. Arriving at the island of Nami-Our view has been spoiled by the beauty of the Path lined by maple trees that are so iconic with the natural scenery that beautifies it. No wonder if this location became famous especially after being used as a filming location for the movie Winter Sonata.
It was a coincidence that our visit to this country coincided with winter - making me feel as if we were both the main cast in the film.
Mahendra held my hand tightly - the man brought his body closer to mine. The cold air around this island makes my body and fingers stiff. The jacket and gloves I wore were not enough to withstand the cold weather. Mahendra seemed to know that at that time I was uncomfortable with the cold weather around which was quite extreme for people from tropical countries like me.
"Would you prefer us to have a warm drink dear? ask Mahendra
"of courses. It would be nice in this kind of weather for a cup of coffee or hot tea." (Of course. The weather is also good for drinking coffee or warm tea)
"Goodle. What do you like for ? [Okay.what do you want?]
"I want hot chocolate but no sugar. and you? [I want hot chocolate without sugar – and you?]
"I prefer make an order myself dear" (I can order by myself, baby) he said again.
Mahendra walked to the tavern after preparing a place for us to sit warmly beside the fireplace deliberately made around the place. The man ordered our order to the shopkeeper - heard by me Mahendra using pretty good Korean I thought to the shopkeeper. I really admire this guy's adaptability to where he is.
No need to wait for long - Mahendra was seen walking back to my seat with two cups of coffee cartons and hot chocolate in his hand.
Is it too bitter? [is it not too bitter?] mahendra asked for a moment handing me a glass of warm chocolate.
" bitters? (bitter?)
" yes. Your chocholate with no sugar. " (yes, chocolate drinks without sugar) he said again
"oh . I love to drink it this way (oh. I like to drink it that way) I replied.
The conversation between Me and Mahendra was warm and made us feel closer.
Some of the places we visited today were very memorable. From the beauty of Nami island, petite france and finally dusk at Namsan tower which is so romantic by enjoying the beauty of seoul city in the afternoon makes time not feel dark. The night outside was getting colder.
" well better we go back to the hotel, Di. " (we should go back to the hotel, Di) Mahendra told me.
The man either realized it or did not wrap his hands around my waist - further closing his body and my body.
I have no power to refuse him. We walked through the Jung area to get to the hotel.
The distance to Namsan tower and the hotel where we stayed was not too far away and we decided to walk to the hotel while stopping a few times and stopping by sekedae to enjoy the culinary along myeongdong. The diverse snacks that I have never met in Indonesia become interesting things to enjoy tonight with Mahendra..
" In, I think we should try this one" (Di, I think we should try this food) he said, pointing to a line of seafood dishes that were baked and covered with Korean sauces.
I know that Mahendra likes seafood as well as myself.
The man then took out several pieces of Korean won money and paid for the food he took from the food vendor in front of him.
Without making a stale feed it into my mouth "try this honey" he said
I'm not resisting. I bit a grilled squid that I thought was big enough to eat with a single bite. But I appreciate Mahendra's intention to please me.
" hm-mm. Tasty. "i said while my mouth was still chewing on food that was chewy but very tasty
Mahendra smiled with satisfaction. Then the man bit off the other part of the grilled squid he had fed me earlier. We ended up bribing alternately with some of the food that had been purchased earlier.
Our steps finally stopped when we were standing in front of the door of each hotel room.
It's weird that I'm hard to disappear from Mahendra's sight tonight. But it was too late for the two of us who had been tired of our trip since this morning.
" see you tomorrow, Mahendra. " (see you tomorrow, Mahendra) I tried to end the meeting tonight.
" No."
"why? much
" I still want to be with you tonnage. " (i still want to be with you tonight) she continued.
I don't dare answer but I remember my mother's message to I can take care of myself.
" In, may I join in your room tonight? (di, can I go to your room tonight?) said the man begged.
"No."
" Why Di's. We love each other." (why on. We love each other) he said .
"I told you. We are not married yet. " (i told you. We are not married yet)
" please dont be hypocrite In. I know you also want it"(Don't be a hypocrite In I know you want it too) Mahendra continued with a disappointed face.
" look, I have promise to my mom. And you also had promise to respect me dear. (i promised my mother. And you promised to respect me too)
Mahendra no longer speaks. But from his face I know he's very disappointed. The man opened the door of his room - saw my mouth for a moment and entered the room.
I who was still in front of the door of my room could only be silent. I am not able to speak anymore either. I know Mahendra is disappointed - but what I fear is that Mahendra's disappointment will make him hate me.
