Now I Know What You Mean

Hour 21.00.

It's the tenth time I've seen that girl here. At this bus stop. Yeah, that girl, with that blonde wavy hair. It's nothing at all. But during those ten times, we often looked at each other unintentionally. And for me, it's not good that I didn't get her acquainted.

“Hai,” my sap.

The pale-skinned girl only replied to me with a small smile.

“Hai. Umm, I'm Nathan. I see you here often. You must have also seen me here.” Then I was silent for a moment. “Can we get acquainted?”

The girl looked at me flat. “My name is Ellen. But you wouldn't want to be my friend,” he replied. At the same time, a bus that was not my destination came.

“What do you mean?” my many. But the girl did not answer, and went straight to the bus.

I don't know. I'm not offended by that attitude. Instead, I became curious about him. Is it possible that Ellen also goes through night work like me? He still looks young. Maybe a year younger than 22.

After Ellen left, I put my eyes on today's newspaper. Which I found in the chair next to me. The real newspaper is stale at this hour. I turned the sheets one by one. And my attention was drawn to one interesting piece of news.

The news tells us that in some neighboring cities there are several cases of murder motivated the same. All of the victims died with bite wounds on their necks, and were drained of blood. And the most terrible part is the condition of their heads upside down. It is suspected that the perpetrators deliberately twisted their heads for the reason of being haunted. There is much speculation that this is all a vampire.

I chuckled to myself reading the speculations that I thought were so ridiculous. Where are vampires in the world?

A week later, my friend asked me to do camping out of town. Precisely in a forest near the city, where the discovery of the bodies in the newspaper news that night. Although not too close, so there is no party that forbids. Alfred had an idea. He is so obsessive as to be considered a brave guy by his girlfriend, Roxy. There is also Mandy, Roxy's college friend. I'm just following along. So there were four of us: Alfred, Roxy, Mandy, and myself.

We sat around the campfire. As I had expected Alfred, whose side shoulder was a cushion for Roxy's head, continued to roar if he did not believe in the vampire issue in the area at all. If there was, Alfred wouldn't be afraid. While Mandy, it seems to be carried away by the issue. Until he brought himself closer to me.

“I'm scared,” Mandy whispered to me.

“Don't be afraid,” I replied, while chuckling.

“I'm sorry to have come here.”

And then we went to sleep. Alfred and Roxy slept in the same camp. Mandy who was still scared initially asked me to sleep in her tent. But I refused because I felt sad. I finally chose a middle ground. I chose to sleep in a sleeping bag in front of Mandy's tent. That way I can keep an eye on Mandy.

I woke up when I heard mysterious noises around our camp. I didn't know I was crazy because I was sleepy. Or because I have high curiosity. I went to find the origin of the sound. I walked with a flashlight.

The forest is so dark with the voices of its inhabitants. The only light source (other than my flashlight) is the full moon, whose light is mostly blocked by trees.

The voices reappear. It was like a moving sound. I mean, like the sound of a running animal. Maybe a wolf? Grizzly bears? I don't know. Highlight my flashlight hasn't found anything yet. The sound sometimes appears, and sometimes disappears.

I probably searched for ten minutes there.

I don't know what they are. But they're so fast. In less than two seconds, one of them was already right in front of me. And immediately pushed me and cornered me in one of the trees. He gripped both of my shoulders with an unusually strong energy. Now that it was so close, I could quite see his face: a middle-aged, pale-skinned man, with a pair of fangs in his mouth…

What he wants to put on my neck. They're vampires!

They do exist! Turns out I was wrong!

The fear and adrenaline in my blood flowed. But on the other hand, I also have to survive. I have to fight. So I'll drop my free right knee to ************* the vampire. Although I don't know if the results will be the same as humans. But in fact, my actions managed to make him flinch backwards. Even though he seemed to be, he did not feel any pain. But it made him lose momentum. I took advantage of this situation to kick his head with all my might. And he fell. Although my feet also became sick.

I heard the screams of my friends. Alfred, Roxy, Mandy. They all need my help. Even though I know I can't help them all at once. But I have to keep trying. I was lucky to find a large firewood trunk. I hit the wood first on the vampire that attacked me. Time and time again.

But like before, he felt no pain at all. He even caught my wooden swing, and threw it with me at once! My thrown body was greeted by a large tree. Precisely the back. Then I landed on the ground. I think maybe some of my bones are broken.

My body is too weak to move. However, I still realized. The fairly free moonlight in the campground, made me quite able to see the slaughter of my friends by these vampires. Alfred, Roxy, Mandy, who have lost the fight. And eventually die from blood loss. Their bodies were dragged out of the camp.

The male vampire, who had thrown me, walked towards me. I smiled, because at least I would die in my fight. But I realized, her cry wasn't about me. Except when I saw the bodies of my friend, whose heads were twisted to the cruel upside down. One by one. Like the one in the paper. I assumed in my last moments, that they did so that my friends would really die. So that those who have been bitten do not rise to become new vampires.

Now the vampire is kneeling beside me. Lying me. He smiled with satisfaction because he had won our fight. He opened his mouth, and brought it closer to my neck. Yep. My history will be over soon.

But then I saw another figure behind the man. It's like I know him. A lady. Her brilliant blonde hair reflected the light of the full moon. He didn't want that man to kill me. He put away the man who was about to prey on me with a single jolt. Yep. Two cats fighting over a mouse.

But that woman didn't kill me either. He even said my name. “Nathan?” Somehow he knows my name. But everything was answered when I could see his face more clearly.

“Ellen?” my whiskey. Then slowly my eyes began to close. Unconsciousness began to overwhelm me. Then I heard his voice one last time. “I told you, you wouldn't want to be my friend,” he said, repeating the words at the stop at the time. I don't know where I was then.

A year later.

Now I understand what Ellen said back then. Time at the stop. He considers himself an unfit monster to be a friend. But I don't know if I should agree with that or not. Clearly, he saved me. Although I also hold grudges for the death of my friends.

I never saw him again. Including at the stop.

Now I've decided to become a freelance journalist. Special looking for news about vampires and other mythical creatures. I did it, even though I had to travel the world. I want to reveal their existence to the community.

The New York subway could not be confused with the bus at the Bomont stop in my city at the time. Much more crowded and crowded passengers. I was among those who did not get a seat, so had to stand in the middle of the corridor with the others.

The train that drove me had to maintain my balance. When there was a slight shock, I felt my back pushing someone behind me. I looked up, wanting to apologize. But when I saw him…

His pale face was bright. Her brilliant blonde hair. He's right here. He was also shocked when he realized my existence. I don't know what he's thinking about me. I don't know what I feel about him either. Angry, hate, revenge. But also amazed and curious. And strangely, also miss.
