The Origin of the King of Jambi

The Origin of the King of Jambi

In ancient times, Jambi consisted of five villages, namely the Village of Seven Koto, Nine Koto, Petajin, Muaro Sebo, and Batin Duo Belas. The five villages needed a king who was able to lead and unite all the villages.

The elders of every village are deliberation. They determine the terms of the king to be chosen. Each future king had to be tested through four tests, which were burned, immersed in boiling water, made into cannonballs, and ground with iron mills. Whoever succeeds is entitled to be king.

The time for exams has come. Each village prepares its own representatives. Envoys from the Village of Seven Koto began to be tested. However, on the final exam, his bones were shattered. The envoys of the next villages, all succeeded on the third exam. All failed the fourth test.

The elders from the five villages again held a deliberation. "We are looking for candidates for the king from outside the region only," said an elder. All agreed and determined to sail the ocean at the end of Sumatra Island. Then, they arrived at the Keling Country in India. They met someone who was famous for having high magic. After reaching an agreement, the Company immediately brought the future king back to Jambi.

Like the candidates of the previous king, the Keling man underwent a test. All managed to pass smoothly. On the last test, all eyes were opened. The large iron mill that was oppressing his body was precisely smashed into pieces. The elders and the inhabitants agreed that the Keling people would be their king.

A few months later, there stood a beautiful palace. The Keling man from India was also crowned King of Jambi.

Moral Message: A Leader must have the ability and withstand various tests
