Fani's mother stood on the doorstep. His eyes were wide open looking at the extraordinary event he had just seen. Several books and files were scattered under his feet.
Alex approached her nervously.
"Mother."
Alex picked up books and papers. The owner was still in shock at what he had just seen. He was still staring at Alex with his eyes widened. Even when Alex thrust out her books and files, her hands did not move to greet her.
"Mak Fani."
"I.ltya..Excuse me. I was just shocked." Mbak Fani stuttered.
"How's Denis doing? Has there been any change?" Fani tried to be ordinary. Although his heart was still full of questions, so was his facial expression that could not hide his awkwardness towards Alex. His hand took his books and papers from Alex's hand.
"Sir, we'll talk outside for a minute." Alex steps out of the room followed by Fani. He felt he had to explain something to the woman. Alex turned his head briefly toward the bed where Denis was lying before closing the door behind him.
"I'm sorry if I was surprised to see this."
"So, what's your explanation?"
Alex took a breath.
"I love him."
Bruk!!
The book in Fani's hands fell again.
For the second time Alex picked up the book and the files from the floor. He did not immediately give it to Fani.
"Mad must have heard wrong, right?" Fani's eyes are round.
"No mbak. Mama didn't hear wrong. That's the truth."
Madam Fani pressed her forehead quite hard. He laughed wryly.
"sorry. Ma'am was just shocked. Yeah, I shouldn't be too surprised. There are indeed some people who have an interest in the same sex, and may not appreciate it even though they do not support such a thing..."
"Mr.."
"Mbak already considers Denis as a family mbak, and yes, he never liked a woman for as long as you know. So, maybe that's why.."
"Sir, this isn't what you think. Denis is not the man we thought he was all along. She's a girl, just like you."
"What's? You don't make up stories, Alex. You've known him long enough, longer than you."
Madam Fani held her voice so as not to scream.
"But that's the truth. I also just found out last night."
"And fall in love?"
"I've loved it for a long time. I even thought of myself as expected of me. I was really frustrated, so I decided to ask a girl to turn my feelings to Denis. But just as I was about to propose to the girl, the shooting happened. The target is me. But Denis had protected me so he was shot. That's when I found out Denis was a girl. Her mother was there and crying for Denis."
Mbak Fani was stunned to hear Alex's long speech. Unbelievable people who for more than a year together lived with him turned out to keep such a big secret. He never thought Denis was a girl. His posture and gestures were truly masculine. And also with his heavy voice.
"I don't believe this." Madam Fani shook her head.
"But that's the truth. Both of her parents were there last night. That's what makes me believe that Denis is a woman, too."
"He still has parents?"
"Yes. And I know his father quite well."
Alex was silent for a moment. Remembering a bad man who has harmed her and Denis too. How would Denis react if he knew the truth?
"Yes, God. Did ya? It turns out the world is very narrow, yes."
Fani's brother does not stop clucking hearing everything Alex says. "How is he doing now?"
"A little bit better. But why does he sleep?"
"It's a drug reaction. Mbak deliberately gave him sleeping pills so his body could rest. It will speed up the healing process."
Alex nodded.
"How long will he sleep?"
"Maybe an hour. Maybe more too. It can't be confirmed either."
Alex was worried.
"You have other business? Go, let me take care of him. My work hours are over, too." Fani's brother took over the files that were still in Alex's hands.
"May you take care of Denis?"
"Yes. Ma'am also wants to call Bang Theo later to tell him that he did not go home immediately today. He would also be very surprised to know the truth."
"All right then. I'll be gone for a minute. I'll have my men keep watch here."
"It's not so mbak. I just don't want to bother you."
"Oh my goodness Alex. I thought Denis was like my own brother. I don't feel the slightest trouble. You leave. Don't worry about Denis."
Alex nodded. After convincing himself that Denis would be safe to leave with Fani, Alex finally went to the police station where Bisma and Tania were detained.
*****
After providing the necessary information by the police, Alex asked for permission to meet with Bhishma.
The man looked extremely depressed and his face was filled with regret. He lowered his head deeply before Alex.
"Sorry." His voice was almost inaudible.
Alex swallowed his saliva. The man before him was a person he had known for a long time. Ever since he was a kid. Believers of his father who turned out to be betrayed from when. He has tried to kill her many times and it turns out that he is the biological father of the woman he loves. It's really very sad. I don't know what fate is playing with his life right now.
Alex closed his eyes. Neutralizing the feelings of hate and anger that are so strong. All this man's football he can't possibly forget.
"Everything I've ever done to you and your father is not worth forgiving. I sincerely accept whatever you will do to me. I've even received a very extraordinary sentence knowing the fact that Denis is my son. I don't know how I'm gonna deal with him."
The man spoke in a faltering voice holding back all the raging feeling within his chest. Not one bit did he raise his gaze from the table that became the separation between himself and Alex.
"I don't know if it's appropriate to call him my son. He will never accept me as his father." And a drop of clear liquid fell on his folded hand on the table. Alex saw.
Alex is still tight-lipped. He intentionally allowed the man to reveal everything he wanted to say. Alex is still confused by his feelings. He hated the man sitting in front of him. In the past, he was eager to take revenge for all the suffering his father had endured. He wanted to curse at the man as much as his heart. Wanting to do all the bad things so that the man really regretted having played around with the lives of others.
But now he was faced with a reality that left him in shock. That bad guy is Denis' father. How could. How unlikely. And it's real.
Until the bisma passed from before him, Alex was still silent. He didn't know what to say to the man. Should it be a curse that he spoke, or a word of comfort to encourage the man? It seemed like the last thing he could not do.
"Sir, let's go home." A small touch on his shoulder. Faisal stood beside him.
Alex just got his consciousness. He immediately got up and spontaneously saw the clock in his hand.
"I have to go back to the hospital."
"Good."
Feeling unable to concentrate on the road, Alex asks Faisal to drive him back to the hospital.
Just as the car was speeding, his phone rang displaying a line of numbers he did not recognize.
"Hallo?"
"Sir Alex, I'm Andres, stepfather Denis."
"Oh, yes Mr. Andres. What is it gonna take, sir?"
"I'm sorry I called Alex. It's about Denis."
"Yes sir?"
"My wife couldn't calm down before she got the news about Denis."
Alex took a breath.
"I'm sorry Mr. Andres, actually Denis forbade me to tell your wife about her condition." With a heavy heart, I said that.
"Then, just tell me. He just forbid you to tell my wife, right?"
Alex fell silent. Considering what he should do.
"Sir Alex?"
"Yes.actually, he's being treated in the hospital. He's got a high fever. But now he's better." At last.
"What hospital?"
Alex names the hospital where Denis is currently being treated.
After getting the information he wanted, Andres disconnected the phone.
"I'm sorry Denis. I told your family about your situation." Inner Alex. He leaned his back and stared at the road. The night had greeted, and they were still on the street. Looks like they have to be more patient in the face of heavy traffic tonight. The trip from the police station to the hospital where Denis was treated felt very long.
His phone went off shortly afterwards. Alex immediately shifted the green fanel to answer the call.
"Alexes.."
"Mbak Fani's. What's up?"
"I'm sorry. Denis isn't in his room!"
"What?"
