Gion Maiko and Kyoto

Geiko is another name for Giesha, used in Kyoto, especially the Gion district where traditional Japanese traditions are still very strong. Geisha is the name of Geisha in general, art workers who still practice traditional Japanese art and entertain guests in tea houses.

*While in the Gion district, they have special designations for Giesha, namely Geiko and Maiko (geisha trainees). So if in Tokyo people call it Geisha and Maiko (geisha trainee), In Kyoto especially Gion they call it Geiko and /Maiko (geiko trainee*)

Gion is in Kyoto city. Kyoto was the capital of Japan until 1869 and was built as the imperial city of Japan on the principle of Chinese feng shui following the model of the ancient Chinese city of Chang'an.

I'm getting dressed up for a night out. I'm flicking my white make up. Being someone else, being the "maiko" literally means the dancing child.

Junior Maiko - There's a ronce in her hair

For almost four years I have been training Junior Maiko and Maiko, practicing dance, singing, poetry, performing, tea ceremonies, flower arranging, and many things about serving guests.

The art world I never imagined before is now my world. And

"You're number one again this month?" He's talking about my income as Maiko.

"Yes Auntie, ..."

I say his word. A man who was a special person who helped wear the kimono, helped me tie my bright Obi.

Obi who wrapped around my waist was the hardest part. You can't wear a maiko/geiko kimono without help. Although Geiko's kimono was simpler, there was no obi dangling in length. But still the thick Obi was difficult to wear by the power of women.

"I told you you'd make it here, once you become Geiko you'd know how right I was."

"Yes Aunt..." I have no choice but to agree.

This is still not my goal. But I try to do my best. Partly because I've always heard Auntie's nagging that I shouldn't end up like my dad. Who became a rude coolie and died horribly.

I'm pretty, I've got a pretty good talent for dancing, I can memorize moves quickly and I have good posture. Some of the teachers saw my pace and didn't mind making me the lead dancer at the show in Gion, which is why I've been Maiko number one lately.

"Your brother and Yui got an invitation from Mr. Yuto Yamada, he was an important person often bringing guests and customers to Gion. You have to show yourself this time. If your sister allows it, try to talk to her and salute her."

"Good Aunt..."

"Don't talk until you're told to. If there's a young man don't play with the eyes..." Yui Toshikazu, 25 years old, beautiful girl one of the popular Geisha in this okiya, who hates me.
