Time flashed with the scene we were passing through, between the warmth and affection between the two of us, and I finally saw a sign that read the direction where the mental health facility was several kilos meters ahead. It was almost noon when we arrived. Bang Jack rolled down the window and said something to the gatekeeper I couldn't hear. The guard nodded and checked the flip-board to confirm whatever Bang Jack had told him. He waved his hand so we could enter.
A series of special hospital buildings began to be seen, and I began to feel nervous. "So, is your mom going to like me?" I asked when our car stopped in the parking lot.
Bang Jack smiled knot. "I just like you. How could my mom not like it, right?"
Hmm.. start off....
"You don't have to worry about anything, honey. I'm with you, okay? Come on, let's get down."
Alright. I took a deep breath and opened the door beside me.
A nurse came in to greet us as we got out of the car, and Bang Jack talked to him, then he drove us to the patient room where his mother Bang Jack was being treated.
I shuddered, pondering what it was like to live here for so many years. Where things like electroshock therapy and lobotomy are something that is very prevalent. Different rules, different treatments, and different times.
What would they do to someone like me -- if anyone told them that I had a high fear of a dark room? Will I be trapped here? Will I be able to get out of here? Nnnnope. Don't think weird, Rose.
The thought made me grim, my body so stiff.
"Don't stay away from me, okay?" pinta Bang Jack's. "Nothing's gonna happen, but it's better to be safe than sorry."
I nodded seriously and followed him inside. We walked through the entrance near the nurse who was handing out pills into an empty cup. He came to greet us, then we walked again through the pale walls and the patient's room was badly lit with the door open. The thick rubber-soled nun shoes gave rise to a squeaking sound that resounded eeriely.
We turned and passed a few more rooms. This time all the doors were closed. Then we turned again through the empty nurse room and turned in another corner, then arrived at a small room with a sitting area. We also arrived.
He didn't wait for our response, but just nodded then galloped out through the door.
I stared at his disappearance for a few seconds, stunned.
"Wait here for a while" said Bang Jack, then he left me standing in the doorway as he approached his mother's nursery.
His mother, curled up in bed, hugged the doll while muttering to herself. His face was pale, his cheeks sunken, his body thin. Obviously he is not in good shape.
"Rose, why haven't you gone home? Rose...."
My God, I feel tightness in my chest. Too bad to see it, so does Bang Jack. I knew he was trying to strengthen himself.
"Hi, Ma. Jack's coming."
Oh, his voice sounds so soft.
He looked up, looking at his son. "Jack? You coming, son? Where's your sister?" A ray of hope shone in his eyes. "You found him, right? Mama knows." Then he turned to the door, towards me. "Rose? Rose's Mama's son?"
The deg!
He jumped down and ran towards me, grabbing my face. Scrutinized the face - which she thought was her daughter - carefully, while tears in my eyes that somehow suddenly dripped. Just keep flowing.
"Rose... Rose has come home...." He sobbed, then hugged me for a while and then kissed me on my forehead. Holding both of my cheeks she said, "Mama's son is already big. Mama misses you so much, baby. Mama misses...."
