Bram sat awkwardly opposite him and Diah and Diah's mother. While next to her Bella is slipping spoiled on Bram's shoulder.
After saying the greeting, Bram took the place tensely.
"How are you, Bram boy?" It was the first question that came out of the mouth of the simple-looking middle-aged woman. There was no anger from his tone or revenge from his gaze as Bram thought.
"Good, mom." Bram answered a little nervously.
"Mom's glad to see you're okay." Sahut Bu Hasnah, the name of his mother Diah while glancing at Diah.
Diah herself seemed to be pretending not to see the mother's glance. He was busy thrusting plates and spoons in front of Bram.
"Sorry, long time no stop by." Bram lowered his face, he felt uncomfortable in the face by Ms. Hasnah, although the view was ordinary but felt piercing to the heart.
"It's okay. I understand."
"Where's the father? Not eating with us?"
"Grandpa Bella is not feeling well. He rested in the room, after taking the medicine seemed to fall asleep. Understand is old, entering retirement, it seems still difficult to adjust to the new activities. We'll eat before it gets cold, there's no need to wait for Dad to come down." Ms. Hasnah smiled, inviting Bram to lead the prayer.
Shakingly Bram led the prayer before the meal, something he never did in front of his in-laws even in front of Diah.
Diah was momentarily glued to her ex-husband, much to the surprise she saw from Bram, the changes she thought were remarkable for Bram-cold people in their past household.
With a slight hesitation, Diah pushed the rice spot in front of Bram.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. I feel sorry and guilty for my mother and father especially for Diah..." Bravely Bram said the apology, a plea he could not say to the woman who gave birth to his ex-wife when he and Diah chose to divorce.
"Mom's sorry too..." Ms. Hasnah sighed, sounding heavy.
A sentence that Bram did not expect at all.
Bram did not blink looking at Hasnah and Diah alternately, this was beyond his expectations at all. How could Diah's parents not know what sin he had committed in his household. What suffering has he given to his ex-wife.
"Mother, don't bring up the past." Diah said as she turned her eyes to the rice plate Bella took the chicken to her son's rice plate.
"Mas Bram and I are both guilty of this, so there's no need to talk about it anymore." Strictly Diah was uncomfortable with the sudden tense situation between himself and Bram.
Bram was astonished by Diah's words, he knew that Diah had been completely innocent all along.
"Mom really wanted to apologize, never had time to say it. I'm sorry if I didn't manage to educate Diah to be a good wife..."
"Mother..." Diah interrupts trying to stop her mother from speaking. He could not bear to see the fog in his mother's old eyes.
"Diah always said she failed to be a good wife to you. Mother felt her failure was not entirely because of Diah but because we were parents who..."
"Mother, already.don't spoil this atmosphere. Mas Bram just came for a while to pick up Bella, I don't have to talk about things that have passed. We're fine, this divorce makes us better."Diah spoke sharply, stopping the sentence that came out of those trembling old lips.
"Yes, I understand, son. It's okay, I'm sorry. The important thing is that the friendship rope is maintained, as Diah always said, your relationship is very good because you want to keep Bella together despite being separated. I no longer regret your farewell, maybe your soul mate is over. God has other plans for each of you're futures." The voice sounded warm, Bram rarely heard his mother-in-law speak because they were a simple family and Bram himself sometimes underestimated them because of his arrogance in the past.
Bram was silent, he looked at Diah deeply. Once again he could not hold back his day and charmed his ex-wife, no matter how bad she was to treat Diah, from her affair to her treatment, his ex-wife never complained, he also never talked about his disgrace to anyone even his own parents, unless he often found his ex-wife crying in her throne in the middle of the night blind. He may have just complained about his bad luck to God.
How much he later admired Diah's patience and kindness as a wife that he might find difficult to find in the future, Bram really admired him now, unfortunately, he only realized it when they had ended their marriage with the word divorce.
