POV AISYAH:
Aisyah walked with trembling legs towards the door of the room where her mother was.
As usual, her mother was sitting in a wooden chair facing a glass window. He was in the same position every morning if Aisyah visited him, turning her back to the door. On his lap was a small roll wrapped in a shabby blanket. She hugged him feeling like a mother cradling her baby.
"Assalammuallaicum..." Aisyah's voice sounded hoarse. She knew her mother would not budge unless she stood in front of her.
"Mother, Isah came to see me." Aisyah crouched down and grabbed her mother's hand, kissing her politely.
Atifa momentarily stared at Aisyah, expressionless. Then he turned his eyes back to the outside of the window.
Aisyah stroked her mother's cheeks that looked wrinkled, tidying up her mother's hair that looked disheveled. The veil that Aisyah wore three days ago when she last visited her mother, who was her mother, he looked at the foot of his little bed.
Aisyah grabbed him and put him on her head, Atifa for a moment showed rejection but then she complied as Aisyah stroked her mother's hair.
"Mother, behold the law of the mother is open, Aisha will put on the mother's veil, so that she may look beautiful before God. Didn't you ever say that to Isah?"
Aisyah put on her mother's veil trembling. Then smile at the mother when their eyes meet.
Her mother's gaze had been empty for a dozen years, Aisyah was not surprised to see it, but today she felt so sad to see the sunken eye bag, like a frame surrounding a clear glass without reflection.
"Mother always taught Isah to wear it because everyone would bow down when we close our aurat, so God would recognize Isa among his people on the day of the Resurrection. Aisha did not want when God called, Isah could not meet abah, did not meet Asniah's aunt and Rahimah's sister, because God did not recognize Isah, therefore Isah always remembered to wear it." The trembling lips of Aisyah twitched all those words in her sad voice.
"Mother also do not take it off again, for I also want to gather in the house of God someday with mother." Aisyah tidied once again the veil that had been attached to her mother's head and again tried to smile.
"Now you look so beautiful." Aisyah stroked her mother's cheek.
"Isa...? Isha...Is she jumping rope, she's not home yet? I should call him home now it's magrib." Suddenly his mother rambled. Although the morning sun entered through the window slit over his face but Atifa could not even distinguish that it was not dusk.
"Mother sit down, Isah will be home soon." Aisha calmed her mother. The words stopped his mother's movements. Then as if understanding he nodded and sat quietly, tightly hugging the small roll wrapped in a shabby blanket that had been on his lap.
"Faiq.sleep, son. Your father will be home soon. He'll take you to the mosque after that buy you fireworks. He'll take you to play..play until satisfied."
Aisyah stared sadly, as her mother hugged the bolster tightly, bolting her sister who should not be far from her mother, since the day she lost her sanity. He would go berserk if the shabby bolster that was opaque in color at that age ate away from him.
"Mom, how are you?" Aisyah lowered her knees and then calmed down in front of her mother.
There was no answer, only the regular sound of his mother's breath. Aisyah's tears were hanging in the corner of her eyes, she was not wanting to cry about her mother's condition but was saddened by what was now happening to her and her mother.
"Mother..." Aisyah put her cheek slowly on the lap of the mother. The cloth used by his mother was a little foul-smelling, his mother certainly did not take a shower this morning when he arrived because Aisyah visited his mother early, even before the sun really rose he had already set off on his motorbike towards the parlour.
But Aisyah really did not care about the unpleasant smell, she just suddenly very longed to put her head on her mother's lap, as she often did when she was a child.
"Mother..." Said Aisyah as she closed her eyes, holding back the tightness that was squeezing her chest, her memory on the calm face of the abah buried yesterday afternoon flashed in her head.
"Aisyah is not okay now, Aisyah can barely breathe. You know, Abah has left.abah has left us. Abah, a sister who always loved her mother left without having time to visit her mother, even though she was planning next week on her birthday, I want to buy her a new veil, mother's favorite purple veil. " The tears finally flowed through her eyes as her eyes closed. How hurt he was when he said he was gone.
Atifa did not show any reaction, the body was silent like a statue still hugging its little bolster.
"Abah has fulfilled all his duties in the world as a winner loved by God. But, mother..Was Isah sinning with this sense of loss? Isah felt that God took half of Isah's life when He took his brother. Where will Isah complain if Isah is sad? To whom did Isah ask if Isah did not understand anything?" Aisyah cried tetsedu in the lap of the mother, like a child who so longed for a crashing place, unfortunately she is now not a child anymore, she said, she is a girl who is lost in her feelings and trying to find her way home. He's so lost.
And the mother, just stared blankly out the window but her eyes looked teary. Either he understood what Aisyah was saying or he was dissolving in his own grief in a world that trapped his consciousness.
