The top piece of Mount Mahameru was carried again to the east. Along the way from the west to the eastern part of the land of Java, the top parts of Mount Mahameru were there that crumpled. The plunge parts will grow into six small mountains each of Mount Katong (Mount Lawu, 3,265 m above sea level), Mount Wilis (2,169 m), Mount Kampud (Mount Kelud, (Mount Kelud, etc, 1,713 m), Mount Kawi (2,631 m), Mount Arjuna (3,339 m), Mount Kemukus (3,156 m).
The peak of Mahameru then became Mount Sumeru (3,876 m). This is the highest peak of the Tengger Mountains now, even being the highest mountain in all of Indonesia that forms a axis with Mount Bromo or Mount Brahma. Since then the land of Java became stable, no longer shake, wagging. In the hull of Mount Semeru that since 1992 officially stands magnificent Pura Mandara Giri Semeru Agung.
Of course the pantheon of the transfer of Mount Mahameru in the land of Hinduism into Mount Semeru. Once the authentic name is described, but people are now accustomed to calling Semeru, in the land of Java (Nusantara) was described long before Pura Mandara Giri Semeru Agung was built. The old story is written in the book Tantupanggelaran in Middle Java, composed in prose. What is so interesting about the mountain moving story?
The Pantheon clearly shows the spread of Hindu Shivaistism from the land of India to the land of the archipelago centered on the land of Java. In the view of Hindu Shivaistis who have a great influence in the archipelago, including Bali until now, the highest God is Shiva. Lord Shiva lives on the highest mountain. That means at the top of Mount Mahameru (Himalaya) in the nature of India, or the peak of Mount Sumeru in the nature of the archipelago. The Indian Puranas texts belonging to the Upaweda scripture indeed suggest that the Supreme Lord dwells on the summit of Mahameru, and is also known as Mount Kailasa or Mount Himawan, which is eternal snow.
At the top of the mountain which is also known as the center of the temple, Shiva, also known as the God Parwataraja, passed down His teachings to His Blessed, Goddess Parvati, Goddess of the Mountain. The teachings are usually addressed in the form of questions and answers between Hyang Shiva and Goddess Parvati, then recorded in various Yamala, Damara, Siwasutra, and Tantra books.
Furthermore, the books that describe the teaching of yoga provide very clear guidance that for a sadhaka, he who is firm and disciplined makes himself a basic means of yoga, the first step is to practice yoga, the top of the mountain is in the sahasrara padma, which is at the top of the crown of the human head. That way, the top of the mountain is no different from the head of a man, a place that is very important and very worthy of keeping its purity.
Shivaistis did give position and important respect and height to the mountain. Where the highest land in an area or region, there is seen as the center of buana (madyanikang bhuwana) as well as upstream for the surrounding area or region. There also God as the Most Holy Shiva is sanctified, then worshiped. No wonder if the holy places for a broad scope, general (kahangan universe), then established on the mountain, whether at the top, on the hull or at the foot of the mountain, then, because that is where it is spiritually valued as the holiest area.
If not in the mountain then the temple will be oriented towards the mountain. Form of worship (most) was conical upwards, resembling a mountain, either in the form of a temple like in Java, either in the form of padmasana, or meru like in Bali. Or even a phallus, standing stone. From this understanding, the mountain is also called as the acala phallus, a phallus that does not move at once also means a phallus that is not created by humans. In Javanese Kuna, acala is also interpreted as a mountain, coral. Hinduism does teach humans to always be oriented or make the Eternal, not moving, it as a goal. Therefore, in addition to mountains, Hinduism also glorifies the sun as a source of eternal life energy.
Of all this, Mount Agung is considered as the center in Bali, because it is the highest on the Island of Gods. Therefore, until now when in Pura Agung Besakih, as well as pretending other Sad Kahyangan in Bali, there is a big ceremony (great work) still must nuur tirta to Semeru. Conversely, now if in Pura Semeru there is a ceremony, then first it is also accompanied by matur piuning to Pura Sad Kahyangan in Bali, including to Mount Rinjani (Lombok, 3,726 m).
From a thick mountain overgrown with trees, water flows to nourish the earth. Previously, mountain water accommodated the lake, then flowed through the rivers. After being used for various purposes to fulfill human life, water is then flowed again into the sea. The heat of the sun evaporates the sea water, becomes cloudy, and cloudy down, becomes rain, re-absorbed the mountain with its trees, accommodated the lake, shot to the ground, poking into springs, flowing and continuing to flow. And so on, spinning and turning, non-stop.
That's the reason mountains in Hindu cosmology are positioned as upstream, lakes in the middle, and seas downstream. All three form the cycle of persimmons. From the mountain as the upstream that the lapel flows for all creatures. While in the holy places on the mountain, such as in Pura Besakih, on the hull of Mount Agung, as well as in Pura Mandara Giri Semeru Agung, on the hull of Mount Semeru, held a tawur ceremony, for example, then it will flow into the plains downstream or at the bottom of the plateau through the rivers, into the rice fields, moats, trenches, and so on. Thus, the selection of the highest mountain as the center of the buana is based on a broad, deep insight, not only spiritually, but also cosmologically, geographically, sociologically, with a strong ecological awareness.
