Remember Me, Baby.

Remember Me, Baby.
Engagement

Yokohama, August 2131.

In one of the skyscrapers in the city center, the crowd is visible from the first floor to the top floor. Hundreds of men in all-black suits with serious facial features and sharp eyes examined every guest who came. Although it only involved two large families who were going to attend the engagement ceremony of both their sons and daughters, the building was seen to be filled with men and women with elegant and classy looks. They wear the best clothes and most expensive accessories they have. The sound of laughter and chatter in Japanese resounded along the hallways and passages, occasionally some chimed in a fairly fluent foreign language.

Several carvings of dragons and cherry blossoms are seen on the walls and door leaves. In addition, almost the entire room is filled with flower arrangements and modern decorations. Both families agreed to use the concept of international engagement in this event. Only a few older people still wear kimonos.

On the 15th floor, it appears Mr. Kobayashi Sora–one of the most influential men in Japan– while entertaining guests. The man was thin and wearing iron-handled glasses was not ceasing to sing a wide grin. So does Akiko, his wife who looks like a porcelain doll. Mr. Kobayashi's straight, long hair was tied in a ponytail, while his wife preferred a simple and elegant hairstyle. The evening dress they wore looked harmonious, a pair of tuxedos and open shoulder dress in dark blue.

The couple sat side by side with Mr. Sakamoto Zen who looked a little shorter and fuller than his future wife. The man sat alone because his wife had died since Keiko, his daughter, was one year old. Mr. Sakamoto's curls are neatly shaved. Mr. Sakamoto himself wore a maroon suit with a shirt that was in the same color as Mr. Kobayashi's suit. Compared to the look on Mr. Kobayashi's face that still looks cruel and cold, Mr. Sakamoto's expression is softer and quieter.

Every now and then they stood up and greeted the guests who came politely. Kobayashi Hiro, who was standing next to his father, impatiently stared at the clock that was coiled around his wrist. The young man who had a posture like his father started to look riled up. He waited almost half an hour. The engagement was supposed to have started earlier, but they were still waiting for Keiko who never showed up.

“Where is he?” hiro asked Ryuchi, his assistant who followed him everywhere faithfully.

“Nona Keiko is still getting ready, Sir,” replied Ryuchi, “I will ask people to check it.”

The man in glasses suddenly felt nervous. Young Master Kobayashi is quite difficult to satisfy. He was afraid that the young man was impatient and would make a fuss. Therefore, he immediately called the maid and asked her to tell Miss Keiko that Hiro was waiting.

Meanwhile on the 20th floor, Sakamoto Keiko was staring blankly at the mirror before him. All the chatter of friends and family who accompanied him in the room was not heard by him. This match was not her will at all. There are still many things he wants to do.

The round-eyed girl was eager to become a doctor, but Hiro immediately proposed to her after she graduated. His father, of course, agreed because he really wanted the Sakamoto and Kobayashi families to work together. The two great clans of Japan are united, imagine what that might look like. Of course, no one will want to mess with them. That is what his father wanted so much. As a daughter, Keiko could not resist at all.

Indeed the marriage and the new Hiro will take place next year, but ... Hiro didn't give him permission to work, so what was his diploma and all his abilities for? The young man had already said that he should stay at home after they got married, become a good wife and give birth to many children. He has no right to refuse. Although he had known Hiro for almost his entire life, it still made him feel very frustrated and depressed.

“Nona, Young Master Hiro is waiting for you.”

Keiko gasped and regained her senses from her daydream when the voice of one of the servants sounded from the direction of the door. He turned and nodded at a glance, then tidied the dress with a model of sabrina in soft blue on his body. There is no point in avoiding. Want or not, like it or not, this engagement will still be done, even though he feels Hiro is not his match. All this time, he seemed to be waiting for someone to come and take him away.

“Tell him, I'll get off soon,” Keiko replied as she got up from her seat.

He walked slowly to the door with four of his cousins. As an only child, Keiko was very lonely. The girl did not know her mother very well. He only saw from the photo of the bride of his parents in the family room and some old albums are still stored. According to his father, his mother was of Spanish blood. That is why his face does not look like a real Japanese. His eyes were similar to those of a rabbit that was round and exuded a plain and innocent aura.

When he arrived at the main hall, all eyes immediately turned to Keiko and admired her beauty, including Hiro who was stunned when he saw his future fiancee walking towards him.

“How long was it?” hiro murmured near Keiko's ear.

“Sorry, I had a stomachache earlier,” Keiko replied with a faint smile.

The girl nodded faintly and looked at Hiro's fingers with a slight unwillingness. Even so, he still walked by the young man's side towards the altar. If he could choose his own fate, he did not want to be here. Unfortunately, this matchmaking has been established even since she was not in her mother's womb.

As the two of them went on stage and saluted the guests, everyone clucked in awe and admitted that they looked incompatible. However, it was all unable to remove the cloudiness in Keiko's heart. His whole soul and body were not in that place. He simply followed all the ceremonial arrangements with an empty mind. He didn't want this engagement, let alone next year's wedding. Had there been a way to escape .. um, but ....

What would they do to you if I ran away?

Keiko stared at her father with a dim look. He agreed to the engagement today because Mr. Kobayashi had met him indirectly and spoke to him four points to discuss it. The man talked about bad things that might “accidentally” would have befall his father if he rejected his son.

Yep. Most people think the Yakuza have lost eroded time and the progress of the times. In fact, the forbidden organization was simply camouflaged. They evolved, following the development of technology and the life of modern society. His father and Mr. Kobayashi are among the many remaining clans. Quietly creeping in the darkness of the night, strengthening their network to the rest of the world.

If only I could choose ....

Keiko continued to put a fake smile on her face until all the tedious procession was complete. In his mind, he just wanted to go home and sleep. His soul and body felt very tired. Tired and desperate.
