18. Lane's past

In accordance with the original plot on the 10th day, Adam and his family are hunted by his enemy who has the ability of speed, but this time he is not killed.

"Adam are you okay?" Madam Brown trembled in fear seeing the corpse of the assassin whose half body had been burned by the black flames.

"You calm down, I'm fine." Adam's anger disappeared when he saw his mother look scared. He did not expect those officials to even dare to show fangs to his family in order to obtain the position of base leader.

"You better get in touch with Lane, he'll teach the vile official a lesson." Adam's grandfather looked at the corpse which was now completely turned into ashes.

At midnight, all J city officials were again gathered in the meeting room. An official was visibly angered when he heard the killer had failed to get rid of the Browns.

"Do you know why you were gathered here?!" Lane asked angrily. His eyes locked on one of the officials suspected of being behind tonight's assassination plot. The other officials lowered their heads not daring to stare at Lane.

"It's very rude to wake up our sleep just for trivial matters!" The official Lane looked at looked angry as if the murder plot had nothing to do with him.

"If you're caught wanting to kill the Browns then I won't hesitate to kill all of you!" Lane freezes the meeting table and makes a pointed block of ice that leads to the necks of all J city officials. The official looked frightened at how close the block of ice was to their necks.

Since then the officials have chosen to obey Lane's arrangements, but they are still reluctant to obey Adam and one of them is still quietly waiting for an opportunity when Lane is off guard.

"Why didn't Lane kill those officials? That way there won't be any more hidden threats at the shelter base?" Jean hears a system that tells him the situation at the base.

'it's not that easy. Officials have also prepared a way to make the public not trust Adam completely, if Lane removes the officials then the public deceived by the provocateurs of the officials will not remain silent.

"Why did you enter without knocking on the door first?" Jean looked at Liam standing at the door.

"I want to ask you when you'll keep your promise." Before Jean replied, suddenly the bell's voice sounded.

'Master, Aria came and waited in front.' The system tells Jean.

Aria comes in feeling anxious, she doesn't know if this is really the house that Jean was referring to, or did Jean deceive her? A creaking sound rang out, and slowly a rectangular-shaped hole was seen.

"Aria are you sure?" A woman behind Aria asked.

"We can try first." Aria came forward to the hole.

"Do you want to buy something?" A man's voice sounded.

"Well, can you tell me what you're selling?" Aria could not see the face of the person who was talking. Jean then handed Aria the price list through the hole.

"It's.." Aria did not expect the price of the item to be so expensive, she and her friends only had 20 crystals.

"Can you lower the price?" Aria asked again. The crystals he had were not enough to buy supplies for a month.

"Because you guys were my first consumers so I gave you a 50 percent cut." Jean doesn't expect Aria to not have many white crystals.

Aria then counted the crystals.

1kg of rice costs 5 crystals after cutting at a discount, while fish becomes 3 crystals per ounce, and mustard vegetables become 2 crystals.

"Then I order 1kg of rice, 2 ounces of fish, 2 ounces of mustard, and 1 ounce of onions." Aria ordered after a long thought, she then handed Jean 17 white crystal nuclei.

"Wait a minute." Jean pretends to take the goods and hands them to Aria. Aria checks the items in a plastic bag, she feels relieved that Jean did not cheat on her.

"Thank you." Aria then went with her friend.

"It looks like Aria has emboldened herself." Jean comments when she sees Aria walking away from the fortress.

"Aria are you sure about this stuff? You're not afraid of getting infected?" Aria's friend Marry doesn't dare to buy because she doesn't believe.

"I'm sure Jean's brother won't cheat on me." Aria did not force Marry to believe, after all she had grown tired of eating canned meat continuously.

"Of course, it's not safe to bring something like this anyway." Aria and Merry arrive home safely.

"Where have you been?" Naomi asked when she saw Aria who had just appeared after 3 hours away.

"Mom I got this." Aria handed over the things she bought.

"Where did you get it?" Naomi asked when she saw fresh meat and vegetables like freshly picked. Naomi and Aria have been going around looking for supplies, but they have found absolutely no mutated leafy greens and are forced to continue eating canned meat.

"Actually I was told by Jean's sister back then, she said if I had trouble finding supplies, I could buy them in a house with a crystal core as a means of exchange." Reply Aria.

"Good, this way you avoid being surrounded by zombies while looking for supplies in the supermarket." Naomi didn't think Jean would help her that much.

"Let's go in, I'll cook this fish for lunch." Marry seemed hesitant to enter with Aria.

"Marry why don't you come in?" Aria asked when she saw Marry who was still outside.

"okay." Marry finally comes in and helps Naomi cook in the kitchen, she feels uncomfortable just sitting still and not helping at all.

"Joe you keep the shelter base for as long as I'm gone, keep an eye on those officials and don't let yesterday happen again." Lane is getting ready to go looking for the mayor's whereabouts.

"Captain why are you going alone? At least bring one more person to keep you company." Joe feels Lane is too reckless to do the search himself.

"No need, after all I have the ability so if you come along you will only be a burden." Lane has confidence in his ability despite still being in the second level.

"Be careful captain." Joe no longer forces Lane to take them.

"Lane hurry home, I don't want to deal with that official for too long." Adam told Lane.

"Lane do you want to see your friend die at their hands?" Adam pretended to look at Lane with a ferocious look.

"Lane?? Where are you going?" Olivia suddenly appeared.

"It's none of your business." Lane replied coldly, she had no intention of forgiving Olivia.

"Lane I've apologized." Olivia looked at Lane sadly.

"But I will never forgive you." Lane looked at Olivia with an angry and disappointed look.

"Why?" Olivia cries when she sees Lane still has not forgiven her.

"It's your punishment for lying to me." Lane then goes to ignore Olivia who is still crying.

Adam and Joe don't know how to react, so they just watch Olivia cry in front of them.

Olivia and Lane were together when they were in high school. At that time Lane was still geeky and his thin body was often used as a punching bag by naughty students. Lane is getting beaten up more and more when Olivia, known as the school goddess, is dating him.

"Olivia why do you want to be with that little guy?" One of the students at the school asked in a disgusted tone.

"Are you not ashamed of your behavior?!" Hearing how Olivia defended herself made Lane feel happy, there was at least one person in this world who cared about her. But it doesn't last long until he overhears Olivia's conversation secretly with a classmate.

Lane involuntarily clasped the stem of the thorny rose tightly, his hands were numb because it was his heart that felt pain. Lane immediately went to drop the rose with droplets of blood that had dried on the porcelain floor.

At first Olivia is a little disgusted when she approaches Lane, but after getting along with Lane a lot, she later realizes there is a foreign feeling growing in her heart. He admits that he was selfish because at first he was dating Lane just because of his silly bets with classmates. So he intended to explain everything to Lane after the bet was over, but he found a rose lying on the doorstep with blood that had dried up. Olivia turned pale because Lane had found out!

Olivia rushes to find Lane but she does not find him even under the tree of her favorite place, she tries to call Lane's phone number but the number can not be reached again. Olivia chooses to wait for Lane to arrive the next day, but she gets word that Lane has switched schools. She could only cry because she had wasted Lane's feelings.

Since then Olivia has changed completely, she is no longer an arrogant girl even she is reluctant if someone calls her the school goddess. Many men wanted to be her lover but she continued to resist and she later developed a stubborn character.

Lane himself also changed, he became a man with a cold character towards women even with his mother. He worked hard entering the army to follow in his father's footsteps, he didn't completely hate the man for having given him money every month.
