37. Conspiracies
Roswell and Abby were relieved after hearing Jean's remarks, Roswell finally believed Jean's explanation because he himself had also seen the case of people who were exposed to the zombie virus in front of his eyes.
"Roswell do you have typhoid?" Ask Abby to Roswell.
"Yes I have some, I'll go to the clinic now, you guys wait here." Roswell immediately went to take the medicine.
"What about Lexie? He experienced something similar, right? Then can we get Lexie back?" Raul looks happy when he finds out that his son did not contract the zombie virus.
"Yes we'll take Lexie back later." Abby looks happy too.
"Where is Lexie?" Jean wondered what it meant to take it back.
"Lexie was arrested by the base officer when it was discovered that she had a high fever, fortunately they did not find Finn who also had a fever." Answer Abby.
"Why did Finn and Lexie get typhus? Did you eat something dirty?"
"No way, we always eat something clean from the canned food and bottled drinks that Roswell buys." Abby denied.
"Why did they get typhus?" Jean feels Finn and Lexie's disease is too strange.
"I don't know." Abby shook her head.
"I'm actually a little weird with the base manager, 6 days ago they came to the refugee tent and had vaccinations on the children. I didn't mean to be suspicious but strangely Finn and Lexie immediately fell ill after being vaccinated." Raul suddenly talks about vaccines.
"But if they're on purpose, the kid next door to our tent should also fall ill." Abby doubts Raul's accusation.
"Are there a lot of sick kids like Finn and Lexie?"
"Not many, just a few children who fall ill every day and are detained by the base manager." Answer Abby.
Jean somehow felt awkward, she wasn't sure if it was true that children were sick just because of a less decent condition like this? Or is there an intentional element on the part of the base?
"Where are the children being held?" Jean has to figure out where the kids are going.
"That I don't know, we already asked the officers but they said that we couldn't see them to avoid getting infected, some parents insisted on asking for clarity, but they ended up being punished." Abby shook her head, she herself was quite worried about Lexie's state.
"I'm sure there's something the base manager is hiding! The detained children never returned at all! I'm gonna go find Lexie!" Raul's emotions are out of control.
"Raul calm down, emotions won't help us at all." Abby quickly calms Raul down.
"But silence won't bring Lexie back at all."
"Let me take care of this, I'll investigate where the kids are going." Jean feels she must intervene with the disappearance of children and refugees.
Jean immediately looks for Rolland who is currently playing chess with Raes.
"Boss." Raes greets Jean.
"I want to ask you a few things." Jean sat across from Rolland's desk.
"What's wrong?"
"Have you found any clues about your wife's disappearance at this base?" Jean believes Rolland knows a lot about the disappearance of refugees.
"I don't want to discuss or interfere in that matter anymore, I've warned you from the beginning that something is not right with this base." Rolland refused to help Jean.
"Didn't you want to find your wife and just give up?"
"What can I really do? With my abilities, I can't even kill a checkpoint guard!" Jean really pissed off Rolland.
"Rolland calm yourself down, the boss may have a way to defeat the base leader." Raes was a little scared to see Rolland who had almost lost control of his emotions.
"No way! There's no one beyond level 5 other than Arthur, nor do I know whose side he's on."
"You know Arthur?" Jean notices Rolland not hiding his hatred for Arthur.
"Of course, I brought her to this place but she was not at all grateful to me and my wife. I've knelt down and begged him, but do you know what he told me? That's none of my business." Rolland laughed, he laughed at his helpless self.
"Arthur is a man who does not want to harm himself for others, he is not at all wrong." Jean believes Arthur is a man who does not want to get involved with something that could endanger him.
"I don't want to talk about Arthur anymore. I have a clue if you want to save people, but don't be disappointed if your plan doesn't work."
Rolland told about a forbidden place in the base office area that was once a police station that was almost a century old, Rolland believes that there is a hidden basement from the place to hide the evil plans of the base leader.
"This is all I know, I have no evidence to say that the place does exist." Rolland played with the chess pieces that were in front of him.
"I'll go check on her later." Jean intends to prove Rolland's conjecture.
At night Jean wore all-black clothes to blend in with the darkness, running at three times the normal speed a human could reach.
Many base managers who come in and out of the base office building with a state of intoxication, some ability users also help maintain security from intruders who try to enter.
Jean did not intend to enter through the front door, she chose through a back door that was much quieter and suitable for sneaking in.
The sound of laughter echoed within the building, Jean watched as many people were gambling inside, while the women came flirting with the man inside.
Jean watched everything with a look of disdain, she had not expected to find such a dirty sight in this base.
"The quality of the food today is quite good, they even found hundreds of years of expensive wine in one of the abandoned clubs." Said the man who was half conscious, the man was surrounded by 3 seductive women.
Jean learns that users of certain base abilities come into the building, not just for the base administrator.
Jean goes through a gambling establishment and picks a place at random to look for clues about missing refugees, she actually wants to ask the system but the system seems to be communicating less and less with her.
Jean smelled a foul smell, her nose was very sensitive after passing level 5. Jean then follows the origin of the foul smell that punctures her sense of smell.
"Why do we always have night duties? I want to go to the party inside." Jean was shocked when she heard the sound of people, she almost broke through without checking first.
Jean quickly hid in the darkness.
"I also want to, it seems they're deliberately changing our schedule."
Jean looked at the two people standing side by side at the exit, as if they were guarding something.
"It's really boring, they don't even make coffee and give cigarettes." The man complained again.
Jean watches closely the two men, they hold firearms and have fluctuations in level 2 abilities that make Jean even more confident that her goal is ahead.
Jean uses one lightning bolt that easily drops the consciousness of the two guards.
Jean comes out and finds a garden with a rather stinging stench, if not that stench, Jean will not easily find the door to the underground as Rolland thought.
The underground doors in this building are somewhat different from those in Roswell's house. The underground door here used a wooden door so Jean easily smelled a faint foul scent.
Jean opened the door, then went down the stairs carefully. The foul scent was more intense inside so Jean felt nauseous, she did not know what kind of scene she would encounter up ahead.
"Some of the prisoners have died because the drugs did not affect them too much, the leader will complain of the abundance of poor meat quality later!" The middle-aged man's voice sounded angry.
Jean's heart was beating so fast, she should have been prepared for the scenario of what was happening underground, but she still did not accept the fact that this base was eating a fellow human! If there were no sedative necklace she was wearing, Jean might lose control of her emotions.
Jean came out of the darkness, she no longer intended to hide herself.
"Who?" Doctor Zian heard footsteps coming from outside.
"Don't I already say that today's meat stock is up?! You guys are so ra-" Zian was surprised to see Jean suddenly appear before him.
Jean quickly knocks down Zian's doctor and twists Zian's hands without mercy so Zian groans in pain.
"You-you?! Whoareyou?? Why did you enter the underground without permission?!!" Zian scolded Jean nervously.
"Don't you see your current condition? I came to judge you." Jean's eyes shone with a cruel light, Jean's voice involuntarily terrified Zian.
"I-I'm not wrong!! I-I just did my job!" Zian denied involvement.
Jean tied Zian's hands and feet together, then checked the basement deeper. Jean managed to freeze the other three doctors, as for the one who served as the slaughter, he instantly killed the person mercilessly.
Jean watched the bones scattered on the ground, there were some that had been packed into sacks but that did not cover the foul scent.
Jean then sees many children locked in bars, the sound of their crying makes Jean involuntarily almost psychologically disturbed even the sedative necklace no longer manages to recover her psychological disorder.
'Master realize!!' the system quickly inserts a mysterious energy into Jean's body to resuscitate the dazed Jean.
"I-i??" Jean awakens from her daydream, she gets lost in her very dark consciousness and begins to distort, in her consciousness she repeatedly hears a cry for help that reverberates in her mind.
'Your master almost turned crazy!' the system is really panicking.
"I'm-I'm too angry." Jean falls limp, she realizes that the apocalypse is not as pleasant as she originally thought, she enjoys her laziness too much without realizing that others are suffering outside.
'Master aren't you looking for Lexie? I saw him alive but he was dying at the moment.'The system quickly changed the subject.
"Ah yeah, I almost forgot about Lexie." Jean soon forgets the previous events and rushes to find Lexie's whereabouts.
Lexie lay palely in the bars, seeing someone coming before her as if she were looking at a fuzzy illusion.
The person looked worried, he didn't know why it felt like seeing a familiar person, the sense of security that the person gave made him involuntarily smile.
Jean opens all the door bars with the key she got from the doctor she was holding, some children look frightened and even reluctant to get out of the bars due to their disturbed psychological because they watched their friends who came out killed cruelly as food.
As for the group of adults, their condition was somewhat better, they realized that Jean intended to save them so they cried when they were released from the bars.
"Have you ever heard of someone named Anna?" Jean asked the adult refugees, but they shook their heads.
Anna is Rolland's kidnapped wife, Jean does not know if Anna is still alive or has been fed by the cannibals in this building.
"You guys wait here for a while, I'll ask for help outside." Said Jean.
They refused, they seemed so frightened that they wanted to get out of this basement immediately.
"I can't save you all right now, please wait, I promise I'll save you all after this." Jean was a little helpless.
They fell silent as if in doubt as to what Jean had promised.
Jean then took her katana and handed it to one of the refugees.
"You guys hold this as collateral, I'll go back to pick up my weapon later, this thing is very valuable so I won't leave it." Jean smiled gently as if she was persuading a child who did not want to part when she first entered kindergarten.
They finally agree with Jean's departure which takes Lexie out first.
