"Why should I hire you at my place?" Jean asks, Jean is not someone who feels sorry and then easily gives something to the person, he must know the reason.
Liam is startled by Jean's question but regains consciousness. "My friend Misael and I are no longer able to work with Mr. Gill so I would like to ask the lady to take us." Liam pleads with Jean until Linda arrives with tea and snacks.
"Liam's? Is that you?" Surprise flashed in Linda's eyes.
"Linda do you know this boy?" Jean asked casually while chewing.
"Yes, miss, he is a poor boy who works with the Gill household" Linda replied as she looked at Liam with a look of pity, Liam who heard the word 'lame' clenched his hands, he was helpless.
"Malangs? Why?" Jean sipped her tea.
"Gill's household is quite famous here, especially Lady Gill who is famous for being rather arrogant and haughty because her husband owns a large land, the second largest after the village chief." said Linda who seemed a little disgusted when talking about Mrs Gill.
"Lock don't kneel too long, if you're sick I'll bother" said Jean, leaving Liam speechless.
"Don't put Miss Jean's word in her heart, she's actually soft-hearted." Merrill comes when he overhears Jean's words. Liam then stood up but his head was still down.
"What's wrong?" Randalf is coming too.
"This boy wants me to take him to work with me but I don't want to deal with our neighbors, it's going to give me a headache" Jean said, he's actually just testing how determined the boy is, when the last day is most needed is a faithful person.
Liam's head lowered as if pressed down, Linda felt pity but she couldn't help.
"Miss I beg you to accept us, I am willing to do anything." Liam got back on his knees, he didn't care if his knee hurt.
"If I told you to kill yourself, would you do it?" Ask Jean.
"No-miss?" Linda was stunned when she heard that while Randalf and Merril were silent, they did not understand what Jean wanted but they knew that Jean was not a cruel person.
Liam gritted his teeth and looked at Jean boldly.
"If you take good care of my friend Misael and don't torture him, I will" Liam was determined but then confused when he heard Jean's crisp laughter.
"Well, you and your best friend were welcome, I was just kidding," Jean said, sipping her nearly finished tea.
"Miss you're scaring me" said Linda, who was relieved.
"Thank you miss, my best friend and I won't let you down, miss," Liam thanked her as he let out tears.
"Yes, stop kneeling. Then where's your best friend Misael?" Jean asked, but before Liam could answer someone came in a hurry.
"Li.. Liam I thought you were going, Madame Gill punished Misael in the barn for not seeing you work" said the man, the man was called Martin and he was also one of the workers in Gill's household. Liam got up and ran without saying a word.
"It seems like Mrs Gill is not a good person," said randalf who guessed.
"Uncle aunty, let's go see. Perhaps this was also a chance to talk to Mrs Gill," Jean then stood tidying up her clothes.
"Well miss." The three of them answered simultaneously.
"Miss, you don't have to interfere, Mrs Gill won't be happy to see you" said the man, named Martin.
"Then I'll take the village chief with me" Jean said and went to the village chief's house. Martin just fell silent and then left.
In the barn were seen a man lying weakly on the floor and a woman standing holding a whip, the man lying on the floor had his back torn off and had a long wound.
"Basic useless!!" The arrogant-faced woman vented her anger by hitting the whip at the man many times.
"You!! Where have you been!?!? Your work is not finished yet but you are gone before you finish it!!" The woman glared viciously at Liam.
"Then why are you punishing Mishael instead of me?!" Liam shouted, he already couldn't stand Madam Gill's arbitrary treatment, just because they both lived and worked in Gill's residence.
"You dare to fight!!" Madam Gill threw the whip towards Liam's face but before the whip hit her face, Liam boldly caught the end of the whip empty-handed while glaring furiously at Madame Gill. Madam Gill was a little scared when she saw Liam's gaze but then regained confidence, thinking that no one would dare to go against her family in the village.
"Take off my whip!! You don't know yourself!" Lady Gill tried to take back the whip but Liam's hand kept holding the whip until his face turned pale and his hand dripped blood onto the floor.
Jean and the others watched all of that and noticed Liam's increasingly pale face, the village chief who saw that his face was very ugly, she did not expect that Madam Gill would treat the two children in such a way.
"Stop!"Jean appears suddenly in front of Lady Gill.
"You who? You have no right to interfere in my affairs!" Madam Gill was a little surprised when she saw an unknown woman enter but she came back arrogant because she thought the woman might just be someone who happened to pass by. Liam who could not bear to finally let go of the end of the whip, he hurried to take Misael and went to Jean's side.
"Of course I have the right to interfere, how can I bear to see someone viciously torturing underage workers" Jean replied calmly, his eyes were indifferent when he saw Madam Gill. Madame Gill was a very arrogant woman, though, she wore gold jewelry that was very conspicuous on her body for the villagers to respect her but in Jean Madam Gill's eyes was a fool because such striking jewelry would entice the criminals to steal her.
"You!" Madam Gill suddenly saw the village head who was also standing in front of the warehouse so she did not continue her words.
"Mrs Gill why are you abusing these two kids?" The village chief asked as he looked at Madame Gill unhappily.
"Act.. A.. I'm just punishing both of them, they're both entitled to the law for not completing their duties" Mrs Gill said a little fearfully.
"Do you not know if you are abusing a child, you are going to jail?" Merril asked who was actually almost angry at Madame Gill.
"I give them a salary and give them a place to live, they have to accept the consequences!" Madam Gill was a little irritated when she saw a stranger trying to fight her.
"Madam Gill please calm yourself down for a bit, let's talk about it carefully," the village chief tried to calm the situation first. Actually she was a little embarrassed by Mrs Gill's rude treatment of Jean.
"Village chief why did you come here?" Madam Gill was still unhappy with the disturbance that came suddenly, but she still tried to hold back her emotions when talking to the village chief.
"Let me do the talking" Jean said before the village chief answered Mrs Gill's question.
Lady Gill looked at Jean from top to bottom with a look of disdain when looking at Jean's modest attire, she questioned what qualifications the woman had to let her talk to her. Mrs Gill had no idea that behind the simplicity of Jean's clothes, it was actually an expensive brand that Mrs Gill couldn't afford to pay with her monthly money.
"I want to take these two kids with me," Jean spoke directly to the point, she didn't like to mince words to people like mistress Gill.
"How much can you pay to take them both?" Lady Gill was unhappy with Jean's seemingly arrogant behavior.
"Mrs Gill please pay attention to your sentence!" The angry village chief said, he cannot afford to offend the Barker family.
"How much do you think I should pay?" Jean was still relaxed, she did not pay much attention to how much money she had to spend for the two boys. But in Liam's eyes, Jean is his savior and he owes Jean a lot of money.
"For one person you need to pay as much as 1,000 dollars, so if you want both, you have to pay 2,000 dollars," Madame Gill said while pretending to calculate the living expenses of the two boys in her mind. In fact, Liam and Misael are actually not too concerned by Mrs Gill. They are always fed only with leftover rice and sometimes they only eat with salt as a vegetable substitute. To sleep, they were only allowed to sleep in the barn and never stepped into Mrs Gill's house.
"Mrs Gill.." Before the village chief finished his sentence, Jean interrupted first.
"Well, I'll pay," Jean took out a check and wrote down some money, then gave the check to Mrs Gill.
"Is this real?" Mrs Gill doubts the authenticity of the check Jean gave her.
"As much as Mrs Gill believes it or not, Mrs Gill can check it out at the bank and also here there is the village chief as a witness," suddenly Madame Gill regretted asking for too little money, but he could not ask for more since there was a village chief with them.
"With this matter over, I hope that Madame Gill will notice my face next time" said the village chief who had earlier held the shame on her face.
