Love Lightning Old Virgin

Love Lightning Old Virgin
Chapter X

No one treated her badly, she was ensnared in loving kindness, not only from her aunt, but also from the Great Lord and Grand Madam Oliver, and from the three Archard sisters: even Deborah, who was a child, the ten-year-old, put great affection on him, and became spoiled in a very shameful manner. Corswold and Lavinia, who both rated Miss Dior as two drab young women, apparently once told Cherry that they were looking forward to the day when they could call her their sister. This, Archard said, is not right to do, but it does not seem to occur to him that his own behavior is unsatisfactory.

It was clear to Miss Dior that the young man's affection for his parents was excessive: but when he asked Archard if he had been ready to marry Cherry, Archard replied, “No, no! That means well, what I mean is ... oh, I don't know, but I think something will happen to prevent it.”

“But, I got the impression, My son,” said Miss Dior, “your parents love you so much and never refuse to give you anything?”

“That's it!” archard said with passion. “All ... all my wishes were granted, so .. so how could I be so ungrateful as to refuse to do the only thing they ever asked me to do? Especially when my mother pleads with great, tears in her eyes, so that I do not destroy the only hope of my father left!”

This moving state of affairs failed to impress Miss Dior. She said, in a somewhat amused tone, she was at a loss in understanding the reason her loving parents so wanted her marriage to a girl she did not want to marry.

“Cherry is the daughter of Papa's close friend,” explains Archard, with a tone of voice showing respect.

“When Captain Constantine bought Mont saint michael, it was done in the hope that their two estates would be combined, in the end, with this marriage.”

“Captain Constantine, I suppose, is a rich man?”

“Oh, yes! All members of the Constantine family are wealthy,” Archard said. “But, it has nothing to do with this problem.” Miss Dior thought that it might be very much related to the matter, but did not express this thought. After a moment, Archard said with a slight hue, “My father, I am sure, never had any materialist thoughts, Madam! Her only desire was to ensure my happiness, and she believed that because when we were kids, Cher and I used to play together, and did like each other, we had to come together as husband and wife. But, we don't have to!” archard, with unnecessary violence.

“No, I guess you don't want it!” Miss Dior agreed, there was an amused tone in her voice. “Really, I was confused guessing what made your parents think you wanted it.”

“They are convinced that Cher's wild nature is due to her young age, and because she's kept too tight by the Madam. Raina, and that I will be able to control it,” Archard said.

“But, I can't, Madam! I could never prevent him from delinquency, even when we were little, and I didn't want to marry a stubborn girl, who thought she always knew better than I did, and said that I had no guts as I tried to prevent him from doing anything that violated manners! I was really trying to stop him from escaping Etretat, but, except for taking him back by force, there was no other way to do it. And,” he added honestly, “by the time I managed to catch up to him, he had already arrived in a village, and he said if I touched him just a little bit, he would scream for help, he said, apart from biting, clawing, and kicking, and if I am weak-hearted because it undoes my intentions, well, then I am indeed weak-hearted! Just imagine what slander could come up, Madam! He would wake up the whole place and some farmers had already started working in the fields! I had to give up!

Then, he said that because none of them believed him when he said no one would persuade him to marry me, the best way to prove it to them is to run away. And, I must admit I do feel this might be a good thing to do. But, when she tried to persuade me to go home, and pretended I knew nothing about her leaving the house before dawn, I did not comply! Well, how lousy would it be to let a stupid girl roam around unattended!”

“Yes, and had I not woken up because my face was buffeted by moonlight, I would definitely not have known the slightest bit about this?” archard said fiercely. “Of course I got up to pull the curtain up close, and that's why I saw Cher. He was in a hurry to leave the place, carrying a suitcase. I hope I don't see it, I don't mind admitting it, but since I did see it, what can I do other than catch up?”

“Can't imagine!” Miss Dior admitted.

“No, well, you see how it becomes. I had to change clothes, of course, and then sneak out of the house, into the stables, and when I put a saddle on a horse that pulled a carriage and lied to Beate he was one of our stewards, and what does he have to do besides go out in his pajamas to see who stole a horse and a carriage? Cher is halfway to Colleville. I suspect he must have gone there because I certainly thought he was trying to get back to Cheltenham, and I'm pretty sure there was a train leading up to the Saint trinite from Colleville sur mer, and the Saint trinite is on the road route where the horse-stopping post goes to Cheltenham. I guess the plan was already outrageous, but apparently not as far-reaching as his precious Rouen plan! I've said all I can to persuade him to throw away such a careless idea, but it's useless. So, when he says with or without help he will still go to Rouen, I think the only thing to do is to take him there.”

He finished off in a defensive tone, and looked so timid that Miss Dior was not hard to realize that Cher, with a much stronger nature, was, it had actually persuaded him to grant the girl's request reluctantly. However, Miss Dior said that Archard had certainly done the right thing: and advocated that he tell his father, without limits, what he thought of the topic of the wedding planned for him.

“Thus,” said, “your father will hardly feel surprised, let alone Cherry has expressed her opinion so clearly. I wouldn't be surprised if he felt relieved to avoid such a daughter-in-law.”
