Mr. Arthur could not feel certain, but continued to mention one after another and talk about all the bad consequences that could result from what he called his brother's rash actions until, in despair, he was left with a hearty heart, Miss Dior persuaded her to talk about her children, about the tendency of little Luke to develop a cough accompanied by shortness of breath, and what is the best way to deal with it. Since Mr. Arthur was a very loving father, it was not difficult to distract him from the less important matters for him, and he was still talking about his children when Cherry and Miss Harrow came home. Cherry was very fascinated by the theatrics she had witnessed. She thanked Caroline repeatedly for giving her such an amazing experience, and revealed that this was the first time she had ever visited a theater for an adult.
“I didn't take into account when Papa brought me to Astley's because I was only six, and I just remembered it. But this one I will never forget! Oh, and Mr. Curtis was there, and he came to our seats, and had the waiter bring us tea and lemonade at half-time, and I thought he was really nice! He's a very nice guy, isn't he?”
“Very,” Miss Dior said in a somewhat amused tone. “Omong-by the way, where's Archard?”
“Oh, while driving us into the train, he said he would return to the Somme on foot. I thought he felt dizzy because he was sulking stupidly, and didn't seem to enjoy the show like I did. But, maybe he was affected by the heat inside the theater,” he added generously.
“It certainly comes as no surprise that she is overheating,” said Miss Harrow. “I myself felt very hot, but a cup of tea soon restored my condition. Nothing is as refreshing as tea, right? How much would you like to help her, Mr. Curtis! A well-mannered young man!” Mr. Arthur let out a voice that sounded like a snort mixed with laughter, and once he was alone with his sister, warned seriously not to encourage Cyril Curtis to chase after Cherry.
“Your admirers are other people who love your Service!” abugn.
“I don't like the guy, and never like him. Very different from her brother!”
“I will of course not encourage him to pursue Cherry,” said Miss Dior calmly.
“But, I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't the first of the many people who would go after him!”
“I really hope you don't find yourself unfortunate enough to shoulder this responsibility!”
“Oh, don't worry, Arthur! I promise you I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself.”
“No woman is able to take care of herself,” he said confidently.
“As for not worrying me, I have to explain to you that you are the one who is worrying me! But it always is! You've always liked strange things, and how you'll get a husband if you keep being stubborn and stupid I don't understand!”
After making this exasperated statement, Mr. Arthur went to sleep. She was not alone with her sister again until her return tomorrow, then she satisfied herself by saying in earnest she was not at all calm about the problems her sister was facing, not at all calm. Miss Dior smiled, and floated a farewell kiss on her cheek, still standing in the doorway to see her brother climb the steps into the carriage, then re-entered the house with a long sigh of gratitude for being freed from her brother.
Miss Dior's estimation that Cyril Curtis would only be Cherry's first admirer soon proved true. He took Cherry to Mrs Cheltenham's party that night, and was content to see her protege make others like her. He also invites Archard, knowing no hostess will question the additional presence of a handsome young man on his guest list. Both Archard and Cherry were very happy, although the young man initially felt a bit prestige and considered such a party of children somewhat incompatible with him. However, that attitude of superiority soon disappeared and before the night ended, he took part in all the silly games interspersed with dancing, and gained a lively cheer for the skills he showed while playing span-counters.
He accepted with delight an invitation to ride to Farley Castle, which was recommended to him by the oldest Miss Cheltenham. The activity was made up of six young people and proposed after they examined the ancient castle there, they would eat 2 Span-counters snack is a game of Old French children, they said, where a player throws a coin on the floor and rides back to Rouen unhurriedly.
“This place must be visited by anyone who visits Rouen because the chapel is very interesting, related to the remains of dead bodies and the remains of ancient ruins,” said Miss Cheltenham with extensive knowledge.
The impact of showing off this sudden knowledge was marred by his sidekick, Mr. Andreas Herera, who very rudely accused him of having “taken all the information” from the local guidebook. Because Stonehenge is known as a person who does not like books, this makes everyone laugh, and makes Archard more courageous to admit he himself is not so adept about historical objects, but will gladly ride. He then invited Mr. Hilperton to speak privately, to ask him which horse-rental stables in Rouen were the best: but at that moment, Miss Dior, who had walked over to the group, was there, interjected, saying he would allow Archard to ride his old horse. Archard's face turned crimson with embarrassment, and he stuttered, “Oh, thank you, Madam! If you think I'm believed I won't make your horse limp, or cause him pain in the back, I promise I'll take care of him as best I can! I'm so grateful to you! But... won't you yourself need it?”
“You'll make sure Cherry doesn't get hurt, right?”
“Ya, of course I will take care of it.” Archard immediately replied. “But, you don't have to worry about him, Madam, he's a good horseman once, I make sure of it!”
Upon seeing the troupe depart the next morning, Miss Dior soon found out she didn't have to feel anxious about Cherry or her horse. Cherry sits on the horse's back with good balance, and has a softness, and easily controls the agility of the mare. It also seems there will be no shortage of attentive escorts for the girl, seeing the way young Mr. Hilperton and Mr. Forden compete against each other to be the first to raise Cherry on horseback. Miss Dior watched them speak noisily, all eagerly, and clearly eagerly looking forward to the day of boundless fun, unless they considered Martin, and the stewardess of the elderly Lady Srinchcombe, to be very much in love, who miss the entourage, as an obstacle, which will indeed be an obstacle if the high young spirit encourages the desire of their hearts to drive horses in a dangerous way. Mrs Cheltenham has told Caroline, Tuckenhay can be trusted to keep Stonehenge, and Caroline knows, from her own experience in youth, Martin is very capable of handling Cherry, just in case the excitement would cause the girl to show off her skills in riding to her new friends.
