Love Lightning Old Virgin

Love Lightning Old Virgin
LXII CHAPTER

“She went to Paris about ten days ago,” replied Big Lady Dior. “But, her niece is still here, so I guess she definitely intends to return.”

“Ah, you inscribed to me that the girl is here, and I really wish she wasn't here! Remember, she's a charming little girl, and I don't want to say anything bad about her, but I never approve of Caroline's behavior on this subject, and I'll never agree!”

“Master Constantine did not approve either. She said Caroline wasn't a decent person to look after Cherry.”

“Basic brash!” furious Mr. Arthur. “But, Caroline is not a decent person, and I've been saying that all this time!”

“No, I'm sure you're right,” the wife agrees. “But, I think really, I know Mr. Constantine has an intention to release him from Caroline's responsibilities. That's why he went to Paris. You can't mention this, Arthur because Cherry doesn't know about this at all, and Caroline told me secretly.”

“You told me, in the first letter you wrote after I left you here, that you thought there was no danger Caroline would fall in love with him. Only God knows why so many women really fall in love with him because he is such a proud and so unpleasant man that I wish I had never met!”

“I admit I don't like him, but I think he can make himself so much fun for anyone he wants to love.”

“Gosh, you didn't mean to tell me that guy had fun Caroline!” he cried, full of fear.

“You wouldn't think so, but.. I don't know, Arthur! Mr. Constantine didn't seduce her, and she seemed to be saying very disrespectful things to him, but if he didn't try to take an interest in Caroline, he said, I inevitably wonder why he has remained in Rouen for such a long time.”

“What does Caroline like her?” sue Mr. Arthur.

“I don't know that either.” The wife admitted. “Someone wouldn't think so, because they seem to be clucking at each other every time I meet, but lately I have suspected Caroline of not being as indifferent to her as she wanted me to believe.”

“You must be wrong! Caroline, of all people, has feelings for a man like Constantine? That's not possible! They call him the roughest man in Paris! I'm not surprised that guy would try to seduce her. He was known to love play, and I was so unsettled to know that Cherry was his niece, because most likely the man would come here, and Caroline was a very beautiful woman! But, that Caroline would fall in love with him no, no, Majorie, you must be wrong!”

“Maybe I was wrong, dear. But, if I'm not mistaken, if Caroline receives a proposal from her, we should learn to like her.”

“Liked it?” Mr. Arthur repeated, in a surprised voice. “I can tell you this, Majorie, nothing will ever persuade me to agree to that marriage!”

“But, Arthur,” the wife denied, “your consent is not needed. Caroline is not a child. If he decides to marry Mr. Constantine, he will, and you will have to accept it willingly unless you want to stay away from him, which I'm pretty sure you don't want.” Mr. Arthur looked a bit confused, but said, “If Caroline chooses to marry Constantine, she will have to bear the consequences. But, I will warn him earnestly they could be more unreserved than he anticipated!”

“You will do everything as you see it well, dear, but you must promise me you will not mention the matter to Caroline until she speaks to her herself. Remember, these are all current estimates. And, you can't say anything at all to make her sad. But, when you see her, I'm sure you don't want to make her sad.”

However, Mr. Arthur will not see his sister until the next day. A visit from Miss Harrow has caused Caroline a headache, and is reluctant to accept the other guests. As soon as the doctor said there was no danger of transmission to fear, Grand Lady Dior realized it was impossible to ban Miss Harrow from entering Caroline's room because Caroline had asked to meet Cherry, and Miss Harrow, regrettably, has met Cherry who came out of the sickroom. The painful sight was the result, for, being accused of having entered secretly to see Miss Dior when Elle did not see, Cherry said angrily she had done nothing of the sort. Miss Dior had called out to her, and about Elle not seeing, Elle was in that room and was still there. This leads Miss Harrow to leave quickly in search of Grand Lady Dior, demanding hysterically to find out why Cherry has been allowed to see Miss Dior while she, her own cousin, is prevented. As a result, Grand Madame Dior, who felt Miss Harrow's bouts of depression had a point, said no one was trying to keep her away from Caroline: of course she could look at her. She added that she knew Belevia could be trusted not to stay with her for too long, or to talk too much. Miss Harrow, still sobbing, replied she hoped she would be wise not to talk too much to people in weak conditions like Caroline. Grand Mistress Dior hoped so, but she doubted it, and ended the visit twenty minutes after Miss Harrow entered the room, which at that time Caroline looked as if she was about to have a relapse.

“I think I should send you out now, Belevia,” Big Lady Dior said, with a friendly smile. “Doctor says only a quarter of an hour, you know!”

“Oh, yes, indeed! He's so right! Poor Caroline is so weak! I confirm I was very surprised to find him so pale and not like him, but, as I told him, we will soon see him recover. Now, I'm gonna leave him, and he's gonna have to try to sleep, don't you think? I will only draw curtains covering the windows because there is nothing more unpleasant than being exposed to the glare of light. Not that it's so unpleasant to see the sun again after days of cloudiness, and they say sunlight is very useful even though I doubt it myself. I remember my dear mama saying sunlight is harmful to a woman's skin, and she wouldn't go outside in the open air without wearing a veil on her face. Well, I have to leave you now, dear Caroline, but you can be sure I'll always look to see how you are!”

“Majorie,” Miss Dior said weakly, when Miss Harrow finally brought herself out of the room, “if you love me, kill our beloved cousin! The first thing he said when he came in was that he wouldn't talk to me, but he hasn't stopped talking since then until now.”

Miss Harrow managed to annoy Mr. Arthur at the dinner table, first by expressing a series of very foolish views, then by trying to argue with the Great Lady Dior. When dinner ended, Miss Harrow stood up, saying, “Now you must forgive me, if you will please! I'll be up to sit down to accompany our dear patient for a moment.”

“No, Belevia,” said Big Lady Dior, “Caroline is very tired, and should not receive any more guests today.”

“Oh” said Miss Harrow, with a small laugh accompanied by anger, “I do not consider myself including a guest, Big Lady Dior. You've been in Caroline's room a few times, and some people might think I'm more entitled to do that because I'm a relative! Not that I meant to say you weren't a welcome guest because I'm sure Caroline would always be happy to see you!”

Mr. Arthur was immediately offended to hear this statement, telling him aloud that Grand Madam Dior should be the only determinant of who would be, he said, and who wouldn't be allowed to visit Caroline and add if the wife took her advice, he won't allow Miss Harrow to approach Caroline again because Mr. Arthur doesn't doubt Miss Harrow's unrelenting babble that has left Caroline tired.
