However, this doesn't work. Cherry, having stopped sulking and feeling regret and crying as she pleased, did not want to enjoy the relief of pouring out her deep regret to Miss Dior who was reluctant to listen. It took a long time before Cherry could be convinced her mistake in speaking was both caused by Miss Harrow's mistake as well as her and when she was finally made aware to accept the certainty that her unfortunate offence, she said, but it is perfectly understandable against the norm of decency in which he has been brought up, not to make him unforgivable, he said, it only made her feel a deep sense of regret for having forgotten all her debt to Miss Dior so much that she had urged Miss Dior to take her to the Official Dance Party, and then behave as if he had been born in a poor village.
By the time Miss Dior managed to get Cherry to go to bed with a more carefree mind, time had already run almost an hour, he said, and he himself felt very tired and tended to want to curl up in bed without wearing his sleeping cap. Of course, it was completely unworkable, and he was tying a rope under his chin when another knock was heard at his door, which was immediately followed by the appearance of Miss Harrow, who was, also in a state of tears, and more chatty than usual. He had come, he said, to explain to his dearest cousin how it could have happened until he had let his feelings take hold of him. Caroline said tiredly, “Please don't, Belevia! I was too tired to listen, and could think of nothing but my bed. Unfortunately, it was embarrassing, but there was too much to say about it. Let's forget it!”
However, this is what Miss Harrow insists she is incapable of. He's not gonna stop Caroline from sleeping. “I won't stay more than a minute,” he said. “But, I wouldn't have been able to close my eyes all night if I hadn't told you how I felt about this incident.”
In reality, he stayed for twenty minutes, saying, “Just one more word!” every time Caroline tried to get rid of him: and would probably stay for another twenty minutes had Elle not walked in, and told Miss Harrow, in a forbidding tone of voice, it was time for her to go to sleep, instead of babbling to Miss Caroline to make you dizzy. Miss Harrow was offended, but she was no match for Elle, and after pausing only to urge Caroline to drink a few drops of laudanum if she found herself having trouble sleeping, he delivers a loving good night to Caroline and finally leaves.
“There is one person who has more appearance than intelligence, and a word of no quality,” Elle said with a frown. “It is also good that I myself do not go to sleep, which I never intend to do, not for a moment, because I suspect he will come and make you very annoyed! As if you didn't have enough trouble today!”
“Oh, Elle, sssrc! You shouldn't talk about her like that,” Caroline said weakly.
“I'll also not speak so to anyone except you, Madam, but finally it's worth it, after all these years I've taken care of you, if I can't express my opinion on you. Next you will say to me take me I have no right to expel him!”
“No, I won't,” sighs Caroline. “I'm too grateful to you for helping me! Nothing bothers me, but for some reason, I get angry maybe because my financial records are not working!”
“And, probably for many other reasons, Mistress!” elle. “I don't comment anything, and I don't want to reveal it either because you are the one who knows very well your own affairs.” She enveloped Caroline, and began to pull the curtains around the bed. “Not that I do not know how the current situation develops and anticipate it in the future, because I am not a fool, he said, and I've not lived near you since you came out of the nursery without knowing you better than you think, Miss Caroline! Now, close your eyes, and sleep!”
Miss Dior was left questioning how many of her household staff members also knew what was happening now and in the future, and fell asleep hoping she really knew her own business.
Sleep was of little use, but it did restore Miss Dior to her usual calm and cheerful demeanor, and allow him to support, with a commendable calmness of heart, the noise of conversation that enliven or make the atmosphere worse at the breakfast table. For this, Cherry and Miss Harrow are the culprits. Miss Harrow, determined to show she had no feelings of resentment towards Cherry, conversed with the girl in a very cheerful manner. Meanwhile Cherry, eager to redeem her rude voice, responded to this friendly initiative with the same hospitality and an interested face.
In the midst of one of Miss Harrow's memorable anecdotes, a letter addressed to Cherry is brought in by Diandre, who tells her Mrs Cheltenham's subordinate has been ordered to wait for a response. The letter was written hurriedly by Stonehenge, and as soon as Cherry finished reading it she let out a squeak of excitement, and turned excitedly to Miss Dior. “Oh, Madam, Stonehenge invited me to join the horse-riding party to Badminton! Can I come with you? Please don't say I can't! I'm not going to urge you, but I'd like to visit Badminton more than any other place, and Mrs Cheltenham has no objection to that plan, and today it's really sunny”
“Stop, stop!” please Miss Dior, laugh at him. “Who am I going to oppose what Mrs Stinchcombe has approved? Of course you can go, you fool! Who will be part of your company?”
“Perfect!” miss Dior said, with a proper serious attitude.
“I'm sure you'll say so! I think Mr. Curtis is one of the most ready-to-help people ever! Just imagine, madam, she's having this expedition just because she heard me say to someone in the Pump Room yesterday I forgot who that person was, and it doesn't matter I haven't visited Badminton, yet, I really hope to visit there. And, the best part is,” he added with great joy, “he can bring us into that house, even if today happens to be not a visiting day because he has lived there often, he said, for being a friend of Lord Worcester, said Stonehenge!”
