Cherry awakens when the train stops at Upper Versailles, and unwittingly cheers when she sees the candlelight barging through the open door of the house, also at the sight of the old butler's kindness, the beaming one welcomes his master, and accepts, without surprise, the sudden arrival of a stranger in his company. Caroline handed Cherry to the Madam. Mary, his housekeeper, with orders to place him in a pink bedroom, and have one of the servants serve him and prepare for his abandoned friend.

Waiting until Cherry was done, obediently followed Mistress Mary up the stairs to her new room.

After being outside hearing, Ms. Harrow immediately conveyed what she had been thinking during the trip here after meeting the young lady's new friend, although she did not intend to criticize her cousin's actions, that if she knew her friendship and service no longer satisfied Caroline, she would immediately quit her job.

“Whatever the circumstances I am in,” he said sadly, “I would rather live in poverty than stay in a place that does not want me, despite the comfort of this house, which is indeed very comfortable, if not to say luxurious because it is better to eat a plate of vegetables with affection than to be fat like a fat heifer here but have to deal with hatred! Although I did not like vegetables at all, except celery leaves in gravy, and I could never understand how anyone, not even a character in the Bible, could live by eating vegetables. I could never tell what kind of food it was, but I was sure I wouldn't like it even if I was starving, and it suddenly came down on me, which I thought was very unlikely. But,” he continued, staring fixedly at Miss Dior with a reproachful look, “I will be forced to like it if you want to put others in my position.”

“Don't be a Belevia fool, what are you talking about, this is no business with the bible as you say!” sahut Miss Dior, in an amused tone. “I don't have the slightest desire to put others in your position, keep that in mind!” Having always liked silly things, he could not resist the urge to say.

“I can guarantee there's no hate in this house unless Elle hates you, but you won't care because you should know he wouldn't have done it if he wasn't afraid you'd fire him on my behalf! but that fat heifer confused me! Where's Cousin, you suspect I'm laying an ox?”

“I speak figuratively,” Miss Harrow replied, with the pressure of an angry voice.

“Not that means you can ground an ox anywhere in Rouen because you can believe it would break the rules. I'm sure you won't be allowed to ground a cow, and it'll definitely be much more useful for you!”

“Yes, definitely!” Miss Dior agrees, very dumbfounded.

“Boams and cows have nothing to do with this!” miss Harrow said, suddenly starting to cry. “My feelings are hurting, Caroline! When I heard you invited the young girl to come here to be your companion, I felt my heart tormented, which I feared made my nerves never recover, all my veins simultaneously stopped!” Realizing that her old cousin was very disappointed, Caroline focused on calming the feeling of her cousin being torn apart although a little confused by the tropes being conveyed but Miss Dior understood where this was going. and it took time and patience to appease Miss Harrow, and although Caroline managed to convince him she was not in danger of being fired, she failed to get him to accept Cherry's presence at Versailles.

“I can't like it, Cousin,” said Miss Harrow with emphasis.

“You must forgive me if I say that I am surprised you have to offer him a guest in your house because you usually have much better wisdom. Keep this in mind, you'll regret it!”

“If I regret it, Belevia, you will be comforted to say you warned me! But, what reason do I have for not helping the child from his very difficult circumstances?”

“I believe,” said Miss Harrow in a sad tone, “the story she told you could have been a hoax! I assumed that girl would be the culprit of the commotion! His attitude is very disrespectful! Not having careful consideration, running away from home and accompanied by a young man! Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but such behavior doesn't fit my understanding of manners. What's more, I'm pretty sure Mr. Arthur will resist as strongly as I do!”

“Maybe even harder,” Caroline said. “But I don't think he's that stupid to call it rude or rude like you said!”

Miss Harrow became frightened at the furious glare flaming in Caroline's eyes, and began to utter puzzling things, which quietly conveyed a sense of regret as well as self-righteousness. Caroline interrupted her conversation, telling her she wished Miss Harrow had treated Cherry politely. Caroline spoke in a very loud tone, and as the embittered Miss Harrow looked for safety in tears, she said, Caroline was completely unmoved and only advised her cousin to go upstairs and empty the contents of her suitcase and clean up and prepare for dinner soon.
