Miss Dior spent the morning writing a long, delayed letter to an old friend, and afterwards spent time with her housekeeper. He was checking some linen when Anash went up to tell someone named Mr. Constantine had come to visit, and was waiting for him in the living room.
Five minutes later, Miss Dior entered the living room, having paused for a moment to confirm her, with a full critical glance at her reflection in the long mirror in her bedroom, showed a proper picture of him to Cherry's uncle. He was satisfied with what he saw. Her dress was made of a soft, pale gray silk cloth, with a tail section and a small lace collar around the neck shaft, making her the best dress, she said, for a tall, mature, social-status woman, but what she failed to realize because she never thought about her beauty was further accentuated by the soft color of her dress. She considered gray to be a middle-aged color, and it occurred to her mind that her dense golden hair could not have been owned by a woman who had gone through her youth, he will definitely be looking around in his wardrobe for a hat that fits to be worn on the head. Not that a hat can dim the light in his eyes, but it did not occur to him because the introduction of his own beauty has fostered hatred in him. She prefers to have brown hair and tends to find her precious beauty rather striking.
Upon entering the living room, he paused for a moment at the doorway, observing his guest. The guest was standing in front of the fireplace, a burly man with dark hair and skin. His brows were straight and somewhat thick, and underneath were a pair of ominous gray eyes that looked at Miss Dior, the expressions in both eyes emitting a sense of shock mixed with reproach. Which caused Miss Dior to be angry, the man lifted the other lensed glasses, as if to judge himself more precisely. Miss Dior's eyebrows shot up, she stepped forward, saying in a haughty manner, “Master Constantine, I guess?”
The man nodded, letting his glasses loose, and replied rudely, “Ya. You Miss Dior?” Miss Dior tilted her head, with an attitude intending to embarrass the man.
“For God!” said the guest. It is unexpected that this statement elicits laughter from within Miss Dior. She held him back quickly, and tried to make the man feel embarrassed, by reaching out and saying, in a calm voice, “How are you? You want to meet your nephew, of course. I'm sorry because she wasn't home this morning.”
“No, I do not want to see her, although I think I have to see her,” said, while shaking Miss Dior's hand briefly.
“I'm coming to meet you, Miss Dior if you are indeed Miss Dior.”
Caroline seemed amused at this statement. “Of course I am Miss Dior. You must forgive me if I ask why you should doubt it?” And, if that doesn't make you apologize for your insolence, there's no forgiveness for you! caroline thought, waiting in hope.
“Because you are too young, of course!” the man replied, disappointing Caroline.
“I came here in hopes of meeting an old woman or, at least, a woman of the proper age!”
“Let me assure you, Sir, even though I do not consider myself old, my age is well deserved!”
“Omong empty!” abugn. “You're just a kid!”
“Surely I will thank you for your praise, although it was uttered impolitely.”
“I'm not praising you.”
“Ah, no! How stupid of me! I'm reminded, after you forced me to remember it, my sister told you this is famous for your irreverence!”
“He said so? Who's your sister?”
“Mr Arthur Dior,” answered Caroline unfriendly.
The man frowned hearing the name, in an attempt to recall. After a few minutes, he said,
“Oh, yes! I think I've met him. Got land in Le Havre, right? Does this house belong to him too?”
“No, I am the owner! But, what does it have to do with you”
“Means you live here alone?” cut the man. “If your brother is the type of guy I think he is, I don't think he will allow that!”
“Maybe he won't allow if I'm 'just a kid,” he replied scathingly. “But, it so happens that I have been a mistress in my own home for many years!”
The glint of a cynical smile dispelled the sense of disapproval that radiated in the man's eyes.
“Oh, too exaggerated, so unbelievable!” He objected. “Year-years, Mistress? No more than five, at most!”
“You are mistaken, Mr Constantine! I am twenty-nine years old!”
The man lifted his glasses again, and observed Caroline closely before saying,
“Yes, obviously I was wrong, because your youthful appearance is to blame. Your face belongs to a girl, but your convincing attitude is not like a child. But, you will allow me to say twenty-nine years old does not make you a proper guardian for my nephew”
“Yet again you are mistaken, Mr Constantine! I am not the guardian of Cherry, nor do I have the slightest desire to replace Madam Raina. I'm concluding, from your sayings, you came here from Ome, where, I'm sure, you've heard”
“I'm not used to it, Sir, hearing the kind of language you use,” Miss Dior replied unfriendly.
“Oh, is that all? A thousand sorry, ma'am! But, your sister already warned you, didn't she?”
“Ya, and also you have no hesitation to oppress those who are considered to be under your status!” sergeant.
Mr. Constantine looks surprised.
“Oh, no! Only to those who bore me. Do you think I'm trying to bully? I'm not so. You did make me angry, but you didn't bore me.”
“I'm so grateful to you!” caroline said, with an ironic sense of gratitude. “You have lightened the burden of my mind! Maybe you'll add kindness by explaining what you think I've done to make you angry? That thing, I must admit, has confused me. I thought you came to Rouen to thank me for helping Cherry, certainly not for pressuring me for doing so.”
“If it is not beyond expectations!” suddenly shouted. “Do I have to thank you, Madam? For helping and conspiring with my niece to make herself look like a role model? For dragging me into this business? Because”
“I didn't do that!” Miss Dior interrupted angrily.
“I'm doing everything I can to end the scandals that may arise as a result of Cherry's escape from the Etretats and regarding you being dragged into this affair, nothing, let me tell you, please, my intention or desire to do just that!”
“You must have known that fool Mirela Raina would write a letter demanding that I use my influence over Cherry!”
“Yes, Archard Blanchet told us that he had done so.” Miss Dior said, in a made-up friendly tone.
“But, since Cherry has never said anything about you that makes me think you like her, or have the slightest attention to her, I don't expect to receive your visit. To be honest, Master, my initial feeling when hearing your name being mentioned in front of me was a feeling of wonder. But, that was before I had a very dubious feeling of pleasure for being acquainted with you!”
