Miss Dior, who enjoyed the story very much, felt that the eldest Miss Blanchet was a princess similar to Big Lady Oliver. He also sees Archard's stay in Rouen as having impacted him very well for the young man, and he hopes Big Madame Oliver has realized Archard is no longer a submissive and beloved son, he will do whatever he is told, but a young man who has crossed the line of adolescence and become a man.
Apparently Big Madame Oliver had already noticed it. He sent Corswold out of the room. According to Archard, his mother did this because she acknowledged the truth of his complaint. Miss Dior thinks Big Madame Oliver did that because she was scared. But, this he did not say.
He just said, “Oh, gosh! What a sad end to the day!”
“I would think so too!” archard said excitedly. “Except it is not the end, but the beginning! From today, I mean! Well, I just returned to the Somme in the middle of the night, so only then did I see the letter that Mama had written to me, when it was too late to accompany her, even though I did not” He stopped, with a feeling of great shame.
“Heavy drunk?” proposed Miss Dior, give the ban
The young man smiled at him. “No, no, not heavily drunk, Mistress! Just a little excited! If you know what I mean!”
“Oh, I know very well what you mean!” Miss Dior assured her, a twinkle of a smile shone in her eyes. “You've been drinking a little bit of alcohol, but you're not too drunk to realize the folly of facing your mama until you remove the smell of alcohol from your body by sleeping. Am I right?”
Archard suddenly laughed. “Yes, gosh, you're right! You're great, Madam! Well, I went to bed, but I told the shoemaker at the hotel to wake me no more than eight o'clock this morning, which he did, which he did, and although I have to admit I felt a bit bad at first, a cup of pitch black coffee slightly restored my condition as before, and I went to Christopher.” He paused for a moment, laughter vanished from his voice, his forehead shriveled, and his mouth hardened. Time passed for a full minute before he spoke again, and when he did speak, it was done rather difficultly. He said, “Do you think I am a coward if I give up, Miss Dior?”
“Not at all! You have an obligation to your father, remember?”
“Yes, I know. But, I began to wonder if she was really as seriously ill as Mama believed. Or even if he really believed it, did he say that to force me to go home, and stay home because of him. Well, much more dear to me than my sisters.”.
“I'm sure he may have exaggerated a little, but from what you've told me, I have the impression that the physical condition of Great Lord Oliver is completely weakened due to his service on the Peninsula.”
“Yes, indeed, there is no doubt about it!” archard said, be cheerful. He weighed in for a moment, then said, “And, he did have a severe heart attack a few years ago. But ... but Mama seems to be living in fear because of the possibility of Dad having another attack, which could be dangerous, if he is angry big or if someone does not do exactly as he told the person.”
“That's very reasonable, Archard.”
“Yes, but that's not true! He was really angry when Cher ran away and I helped him escape: and when I failed to hold back the anger, we had a fight, and I said we would go straight back to Rouen, he said, he became so raging that he trembled with anger, and could barely speak. But, he did not have a heart attack! In addition, he was still angry because a few days later he wrote to me in the form of a great slur that it was impossible to expect me to believe he was very weak. But when I tried to say this to Mama, all she said was that she couldn't blame me for fighting my parents because she knew very well I was caught up in the evil influence! I can't imagine who has instilled such foolish thoughts in his head! It took me a long time to extract information from him, but he ended up telling me, and what do you think it was? Your influence, Madam! Oh my God, I almost laughed! Well, have you heard something as ridiculous as that?”
“Never!” said Miss Dior. “I believe you were able to convince him that he was mistaken?”
“Yes, but it takes hard work! Someone seems to have told her that you are the most beautiful woman in Rouen, describing your beauty intently to her, too, because Mama talks about your eyes, your hair, your hair, and figure your body as if he really has met you! So I said yes, you are indeed very beautiful and also very intelligent, and I am ashamed if she does not accuse me of having been a victim of your beauty”
“I can almost hear him say so,” muttered Miss Dior with appreciative attitude.
“I'm sure it will make you laugh, but it doesn't make me laugh, although I think it's funny. The thing is, it made me very angry, and I told Mama that it was really impolite to speak in such a rude language style about a woman to whom everyone was respectful, and who has been so kind to me as if I were his nephew. That's right, Madam, and I can't leave Rouen without telling you how much I'm so grateful to you for everything you've done to make my stay in Rouen so enjoyable! Allowing me to visit your home, inviting me to go with you and Cher to the theater, getting me to know your friends oh, there are many other things!”
“My dear child, I hope you don't talk nonsense!” refute Miss Dior. “I'm the one who thanks you. I've shamelessly used you and I wonder what I should do without you, to drive Cherry around and look after her. And, the other thing I hope you won't do is talk as if we'll never see each other again! I hope you will visit Rouen often, and I promise you will always be a welcome guest at Versailles.”
“Te... thank you, Madam!” Archard stuttered, blushing. “I mean to visit often, really! I have explained it to Mama that if I go home with her today, it should be done with a clear understanding I am free to come and go as I see fit, and without having to persuade Papa to give me permission every time I want to do something he does not agree with.”
“Ah, you are very wise,” said Miss Dior. “I'm sure he may not like it at first, but believe me, he will soon become accustomed to having a wise man as his son and not just a boy!”
“What do you think he would be, Mistress?” asked Archard, with some hesitation.
“Oh, thank you, Madam, but can't. I can't stay. My mother was eager to arrive at Etretat today because she was afraid my father would worry about the possibility of my mother having an accident. Which is very possible, because my mother never left without Dad. It would have been wise, of course, if we had delayed the departure until tomorrow morning, but when I proposed this, I immediately saw that it was impossible. I don't mean to say my mother tried to. In fact, he said I should be the only determinant of what's best, but I can see he won't be able to sleep for a single moment tonight because he's worried about Papa, so even if we didn't reach Etretat before midnight, it would be better for him to go home today than to feel anxious himself to get a fever. And, it makes no difference that we have to travel at night because it will not be dark, the moon is shining full, and I do not need to worry about the sky cloudy.” She added pleadingly, as if she had detected in Miss Dior's expression how the woman felt about the matter, “You see, Madam, Mama is unwell and strong, and she likes to feel uneasy, she is, dan ... and I know what trials he has been through and ... and”
“You love her so much,” dread Miss Dior, patting the blushing young man on the cheek, and smiling at him warmly. “She's a lucky woman! Now, you want to say goodbye to Cherry, so we're going up to the living room. I think I heard him coming, with my sister, a minute or two ago.”
“Yes well, I have to say goodbye, although most likely he will curse me for not having a determination,” he said regretfully.
However, Cherry behaved with great courtesy. The girl exclaimed, when Archard told her that she had to return to Etretat, “Oh, no, Archard! Should you go home? Please don't go!” However, as the young man explained the situation, the girl no longer objected, but seemed to think hard, and said that she thought Archard should indeed leave. It was only after Archard left the house that Cherry emerged from the reading room, saying solemnly to Miss Dior, “I feel almost glad I'm an orphan, Mistress?” Big Lady Dior issued a somewhat surprised rebuttal, and said, “Gosh, son, what do you mean?”
“The way Oliver's family bullied Archard into doing what they wanted him to do with ... in a bad way!” Cherry explained. “Great Lady Oliver touches the good side of Archard, and unfortunately is she does have the good side! I know it's very commendable to have a good nature, but it makes it a bit weak.”
“Oh, no. I would never say she's weak,” said Miss Dior. “You must remember that he loved his mother very much, and I'm sure he was well aware of the anxious life his mother lived. I kind of thought Big Madam Oliver was inclined to stick to him”
“Yes, he is, and in the most sickening way,” Cherry said. “Then Corswold and Lavinia. I'm surprised Archard can stand up to them. I won't be able to.”
“No, but you don't have good nature, do you?” Miss Dior made fun of him. Cherry laughed, but said, “That's right! And, thank goodness I don't have a reason for sure it's so unpleasant!”
Miss Dior was amused, but Big Madame Dior shook her head to hear it, later telling her sister-in-law she argued the remarks were a sad picture of misfortune related to the process of growing into adulthood without a mother.
“Well, that misfortune is certainly no worse than the misfortune of being an adult with a mother like Big Lady Oliver!” caroline said with a spicy.
