Love Lightning Old Virgin

Love Lightning Old Virgin
XLVIII CHAPTER

Miss Dior's eyes lifted to look at the man's face quickly, and lowered back equally quickly. He could only hope that his two eyes did not show the shock he felt, and immediately said, “Ah, you came to say goodbye to us! Cherry will feel very sorry for not meeting you. Had you told us you were going back to Paris, she would have stayed home to say goodbye to you.”

“No need. I didn't expect to be away from Rouen for a long time.”

“Oh. He'll be happy about it, I guess.”

“He doubted. But, Cherry's feelings about this matter aren't of interest to me. Would you be happy about it?”

Panicked and irritated feelings ambushed Miss Dior: panicked that a pin would be thrown out any minute, and she had absolutely no idea how to respond: annoyed that she was not used to dealing with great tactics, and feel very offended by it. This man was an unacceptable being, and the only suitable place for any woman who was crazy enough to consider being his wife for just a second must have had a mental breakdown. Anxiety allowed Miss Dior to say, with a slight movement of the shoulders, and in a voice whose indifferent tone matched the man's indifferent tone, “Well, of course, Mr. Constantine. I'm sure we'll both be happy to see you again.”

“Oh, for God's sake!” mr. Constantine said angrily. “What does Cherry have to do with this?”

Miss Dior raised his eyebrows. “I guess he has an important connection with all of this,” he said coldly.

Mr. Constantine was apparently able to control his abomination as he laughed short, and replied, “No, not all of them, but of course there is a lot to do. I'm going to Paris to try to see if I can find one person among some of my cousins who will be willing to assume responsibility for Cherry until her introduction next year.”

Miss Dior's eyes glowed, her cheeks blushed, and she said in a trembling voice, “I understand! Surely, how stupid I was to feel shocked because you've repeatedly told me you think I'm totally unfit to look after Cherry. Well, I've been flattering myself so thinking your opinion of my speed has changed! But that, of course, happened before you suddenly became very angry when you found out Denis Damitri had accompanied Cherry to Laura Place. I really understand you.”

“No, you don't understand me, and I'll thank you if you want to stop complaining and throw that complaint at me.” he said viciously.

“My decision to move Cherry out of your responsibility has absolutely nothing to do with that event! I don't deny that I initially thought you weren't a proper person to act as his guardian. I thought so, and I said it, and I still think so, and I still say it, but not for the same reason. I consider it a pity that anyone as young and beautiful as you should act as a bodyguard, by behaving as if you were a widow when you were supposed to go to a dance and a get-together to enjoy the dance until morning, instead of spending the night talking to the real widows, and keep an eye on that stupid little girl who is only a few years younger than yourself!”

“Cherry was twelve years younger than me, and I danced all night”

“Don't try to lie to me, Darling” cut off Mr. Constantine. “I reached adulthood when you embroider! I know very well when the dance ends in the New Assembly Room. Eleven o'clock in the evening!”

“Not in Lower Room!” expostulation. “They keep dancing until midnight there! In addition, there are separate dance parties, and picnic parties, as well as all kinds of entertainment?” Miss Dior saw from the sneer of the man's lips she was not impressed by the various pleasures in Rouen, and said defiantly, “Dan, however, if I choose to take care of Cherry, it becomes my own business!”

“Just the contrary! That's my business!” said Mr. Constantine.

“I admit you have the right to do as you think is best for Cherry, but you have no right to dictate to me, Sir! And, besides,” Miss Dior added furiously, “you don't have to try to bully me, so don't think so!” This speech made Mr. Constantine laugh. “I'm more likely to slap you!”

Miss Dior did not need to say anything because of the appearance of Miss Harrow, who was peering into the room at the time, saying, “Are you here, dear Caroline? I just came by for a minute to tell you I had to oh! I didn't know you had a guest! I'm sure I'm not interrupting! If I could have guessed a little you weren't alone, I wouldn't have intended to bother you because this wasn't important, only that I found myself having to go into town to buy some extra thread, which I did, so I'm here to ask you if you happen to need anything. Oh, how are you, Mr Constantine? I'm sure you think of me as a bully, so I won't stay any longer. I'm just going to get into the baby's room before I go out, Caroline, because we think the poor baby has the first teething again, and I intend to ask Big Lady Dior if she wants me to buy some toothache relief powder even though I'm sure she's keeping a little of that powder, or, if she doesn't, if she doesn't have one, you can be sure the nurse took her from the Chateau. Well, I can't bother you much longer, can I? Of course, I shouldn't have come in if I knew Mr. Constantine was with you, definitely to confer with you about Cherry. So, if you're pretty sure there's nothing I can do for you on Gay Street, it doesn't mean I'm not really ready to go any further, which I hope I no longer need to convince you.”

Miss Dior stopped this rant by saying sternly, “No, Belevia, there is nothing you can do for me, thank you. Mr. Constantine has come to speak privately with me about Cherry's business, and I'm afraid you're troubling us. So, please go shopping without delay.”

Miss Dior felt the turmoil of anger when Miss Harrow walked into the room, but the expression on Mr. Constantine's face had turned the anger into a tingle. The man looked as if he would feel too content to strangle Miss Harrow's neck, and according to Miss Dior, it was so funny that a burst of laughter appeared within him that it was so hard to hold back.

The door had not been firmly shut behind Miss Harrow when Mr. Constantine demanded, with the voice of one who was forced to reach the limits of his patience, “I find it hard to understand how you can survive against that babysitter who lives with you!”

“Well, I have to admit I have a hard time understanding it too,” replied Miss Dior, letting her joy be seen.

“What possessed him so much that he came up with raving about dental pain relief floss and powder when he certainly knew you weren't alone?”

“Cause to know who is-so,” said Miss Dior.

“Gosh! Just throw him out!” said Mr. Constantine with a commanding tone.

“I would love to do that! But, since the world thought I would make myself reproachful if I did not hire a respectable woman to act as my bodyguard, I was worried that I could not do so. It would be too cruel to fire him, because he means well, and what reason could I possibly give to get rid of him?”

“That you're getting married soon!” Miss Dior grew accustomed to the man's unexpected remarks, but her statement this time shocked her. He looked at the man with a surprised look, and was only able to say softly, “Please don't make it up.”

“I'm not making it up. Marry me! I'll promise to keep you from all the boring people who can be as dangerous as your cousin.”

“You are making this up!” sternly Miss Dior, with a much louder voice. “Married to you to be free from poor Belevia? I've never heard of anything like that! You must be insane!”

“No, except falling in love can be called insane! Really, I'm in love. After all these years, finding a woman I thought never existed.” Mr. Constantine saw Miss Dior looking at him in great astonishment, and exclaimed, with a sorry laugh, “Oh, my Lord, I messed it up! I should accept that you will refuse to talk to me again, right?”

“Ya,” said Miss Dior honestly.

“I cannot convey elegant words. I really wish I had the ability to do that. If I could find the words to tell you what's in my heart.” He suddenly stopped, and walked around the room for a while.

“Did you always find it impossible to convey your words elegantly?” ask Miss Dior. “I can't make myself believe that, Master You must have said many wonderful words before, unless the rumors have misjudged you.”

“To a high-class prostitute? That's a very different thing!”

he said impatiently. “A man does not have a relationship with a prostitute with the same feelings he felt when he was in an eternal romance for one woman in the world he wanted to make a wife!” Mr Constantine suddenly stopped walking, and directed a probing look at Miss Dior, saying hesitantly, “Gosh, do you think negatively of me that I have kept some of them?”
