Mr Constantine bowed again, and said, “You're too good, Madam Will you stay long in Rouen?”
“Oh, no! I mean, I don't know for sure, but no more than a week or two, I guess. Will you stay long, Mr?”
“Like you, I don't know for sure. Depending on the circumstances.” He looked around, and focused his attention on Caroline, saying, “Give me a minute, Miss Dior! I'd like to ask you for advice on Cherry.”
“Of course! I'm at your service,” Caroline said.
Mr. Constantine, please say goodbye to the other two women with courtesy but without a smile, and walk away with Miss Dior. As soon as they were out of the hearing of Miss Dior's friends, Mr Constantine said abruptly, “How could you allow Damitri to accompany Cherry to the city yesterday, Madam? I thought I had explained my wish clearly to you!”
“I wasn't asked for permission,” Miss Dior replied expressionlessly. “Mr Damitri meets Cherry, and her servant, on the way to Laura Place, and turns to accompany Cherry.”
“Si waiter does not seem like a capable bodyguard.”
“I don't know what you're going to want her to do,” said Miss Dior, somewhat angered. “Damitri is not a stranger! Of course Cherry would greet him with pleasure, thinking he was one of my friends, and I have no doubt Lisa thought so.”
“Thus, his actions are justified?”
Miss Dior sighed ******* irritated. “Alright! She was indeed one of the friends, but I realized very well, just like you, Mr. Constantine, she was not a proper friend to an impressionable and inexperienced girl, and I'll do my best to keep him away. Next time, if I alone can't accompany Cherry, I'll have her get out by train! And, if he refuses, as he will definitely refuse, I will tell him I am just following your orders!”
“But, I did not give such unreasonable command!” said Mr. Constantine. “Instead, I didn't give any orders at all.”
“I thought you had explained your wish clearly to me, and you might as well have delivered the commands, instead of the wishes, because that is what you mean! So arrogant and disgusting you think I have to obey your wishes, as if I have no mind or will of my own!”
“Well, whatever concerns Cherry, I do think you should obey,” he said. “Remember, you yourself are taking responsibility for watching over him, and no, let me remind you, because of my wishes. At that time I once said, and will repeat it again, I think you are not a person who deserves to be responsible for it.”
“Then, I suggest, Sir, you alone are in charge of it!” Miss Dior said fiercely.
“I probably should have known you'd quickly catch a chance to hit me at the end” muttered Mr. Constantine.
Miss Dior had to laugh. “I get the impression it's the language of the market with regard to boxing, and I guess I can guess what it means! I just hope it proves true! I'm sure there's no point in telling you it's not a proper term to use when you're talking to a woman!”
“Oh, be quiet,” said Mr. Constantine in a polite snobs.
“And, it is much more inappropriate and appropriate to be in charge of Cherry than I am!”
“You can't imagine how relieved I am you've realized that,” he said.
Miss Dior threw a look of despair. “I tried so hard to beat you!”
“You're mistaken. You beat me at our first meeting, baby!”
“Masa?” he said, furrowing his eyebrows. “I can't imagine how much I tried to do that!”
“No, unfortunately I realized it,” said Mr. Constantine, with a wry smile. “Dan, this is not the right place to tell you what I mean.” Miss Dior's cheeks were rumored because these words had made the man's intentions very clear to her. Miss Dior said in a hurry, “We seem to have strayed far from the point, Mr. We are talking about Cherry meeting with Denis Damitri which is somewhat unfortunate.
I won't try to deny that I regret it, but is it really a big deal if she accepts Damitri's control of Mrs Stinchcombe's house? What losses can be caused?”
“More than you imagined!” answer Mr. Constantine.
“I haven't stayed long in Rouen, but long enough to arrive at a fair enough assessment of the stories circulating among those known, I suppose, as Rouen's gossip. Damitri's repuration is well known to them, and I think it's important Cherry can't be seen with him. People have started to gossip, and who can tell how many ugly gossip spreaders have friends or relatives in Paris that he entertained with interesting news about local rumors? Don't think that one of them is the one who gave me the warning. Except Mrs Mandeville, who had dinner with me last night.”
“Oh, jeez!” exclaimed Miss Dior, shocked. “I did not expect Mrs Mandeville, of all people, to regard Cherry as an impolite girl!”
“You don't have to worry about that. He doesn't think so, but he knows as well as I don't anything could be worse than being seen to attract the attention of a guy like Damitri.”
“Oh, no, no!” miss Dior said excitedly. “I can guarantee I will take good care of it so this doesn't happen again!” A smile that looked somewhat sad was stretched out on his lips. He said, with great difficulty, “I'm afraid Cherry is easy .. easily affected by her charm, and I should probably tell you that I find it very difficult to know the best way to fight this. I don't think so, I'm sure I took the wrong step yesterday, when Cherry told me about Damitri escorting her to Laura Place, and how kind and pleasant she thought of the young man. I said jokingly, of course that I did not know anymore how many foolish girls had fallen in love with him, and were left to suffer. If only I hadn't said more than that, it might have stopped him, but when he answered maybe Damitri didn't really love any of them, either, I was compelled to say that perhaps none of them were as rich as he thought. Cherry's... Cherry got angry, asked me how I could say something so disgusting about Damitri, and just walked out of the room. Please don't insult me for saying something so bad. I've been denouncing myself ever since I said those words.”
“Then, stop reproaching yourself,” said Mr. Constantine. “I'm not worried about the possibility Cherry could fall in love with him. A person does not have a romance that lasts a long time at his age, and that experience does not hurt him. What worries me is, she shouldn't be lied to so act recklessly.”
“You didn't feel like I thought you might have said something to Damitri.”
“My dear, it doesn't matter that I have to do that. He could have seduced Cherry, but he wouldn't have gone any further than that, believe me! He's not a coward, but he's a little worried about taking the risk to meet me because I'm going to force him to meet. You can rest assured that I will not do so, for nothing could be more detrimental to Cherry's reputation than a scandal that will arise! Remove those anxious wrinkles from your face! It doesn't suit you! I saw that Big Madame Dior was about to approach you, so we should split up. He clearly felt it was his duty to separate us. I wonder what danger does he think I can do to you in a public place like this?”
