Miss Dior, who entered the room at the time, stopped the quarrel further and spoke in her quiet style, saying, “How many more times should I tell you both that I don't want you guys arguing in my living room? How are you, Mr Constantine?”
“Oh, Miss Dior, what do you think?” cherry shouted excitedly. “He bought me a mare! The horse is gray anyway, exactly as I would choose, because I love the horses are gray, don't you like it too? And, she said her horsekeeper would take care of her so now you will be able to ride with us!”
“Redeeming errors against your guardianship child?” Miss Dior said in a mocking tone, shaking Mr. Constantine's hand.
“No. Against you, I hope.”
Shocked, Miss Dior's eyes were directed at the man's face, but she quickly lowered her head again. Trembling, he turned away, for there was no mistaking the glint of light in the sharp eyes of the man. Mr. Constantine, the notoriously disrespectful man, has revealed a strange and mysterious attraction to a virgin, elderly woman, who is not a girl, but rather a high-social woman, and with undoubted virtue. His initial thought, that perhaps the man had intended to lure him into accepting carte blanche' from her, was only scathed for a moment before disappearing again. Mr. Constantine may be a brash man, but he's not a fool. Perhaps she intended to tease Caroline, with the aim of reducing her boredom towards Rouen society. After thinking so, there was a realization that seducing with the man would reduce his own boredom that was increasing. The man was very different from the other men who liked to tease him. In fact, he had never even met anyone like that man.
Cherry and Archard were arguing about some riding trips that could be enjoyed outside of Rouen. They went into the back of the living room to search for information from a guidebook that Cherry believed she had left there. “And, if they find the book,” said Miss Dior, “they will soon be at odds about whether to go see the Druid monument or the battlefield. I can't imagine how anyone, except the really stupid ones, can-can just think they're compatible for each other!”
“Tverley and Mirela Raina, both of whom are stupid,” said Mr Constantine, putting aside talk of them due to other considerations. “I hope you intend to take part in the riding troupe.”
“Yes, I'm most likely coming. Not that I think it is necessary to take care of Cherry when she goes with Archard.”
“No, but it is very necessary, I assure you, to give me a friend who will not bore me to the extent. I can't imagine a worse fate than having to ride a horse between a couple of kids who like to bicker it.”
Surprised, Miss Dior said, “Oh, are you going with them?”
“No, unless you go too.”
“Worried you might have to listen to their insignificant fights to discuss?” he said, smiling at a glance. “No need. They didn't fight when they went riding together, that's what I was told. Stonehenge Cheltenham complains of those who only talk about horses, hunting dogs, and hunting activities.”
“Even worse!” said Mr. Constantine.
“You're not a fan of hunting, Mr Constantine?”
“Thest! But, I did not obey my conscience to bore my fellow travelers by telling them the great routes I once ran, the throws I once took, the awkwardness of one of my hunters only saved me from misfortune because of my excellent horsemanship' or my ability to ride horses on uneven roads. Such stories are of no interest to anyone but the storyteller himself.”
“I'm worried it's got a point.” Miss Dior admitted.
“But, the urge to boast of great riding routes and intelligent horses is almost unbearable, even though we know one is listened to because others are just waiting for an opportunity to boast of themselves! Which must also be heard, for the sake of justice together! Don't you agree?”
“Yes, that's why I learned so many years ago to overcome such impulses. You're hunting yourself, I guess?”
“It used to be, while I was living in the countryside, but I was forced to stop that activity when I came to Rouen,”, Miss Dior said, with a slight sigh.
“Why did you come to Rouen?” ask Mr. Constantine.
“Oh, for some good reason!” Miss Dior replied lightly.
Miss Dior looked at her somewhat resignedly, but, after a moment, replied in a slightly rude manner, “These excuses have nothing to do with anyone but myself, Sir! And, if you realize I'm giving you what I hope will be a polite, ketus answer for asking me a disrespectful question, you will allow me to tell you I consider you really impolite if you keep pushing forward on this topic!”
“Maybe once, but that's not the answer!”
“That is the only answer I will give you!”
“That makes me second-guess there is a dark secret in your past,” he said in a seditious manner. “For me, that's hard to believe. With another woman, who was very different, I might think it was the word scandal that had pushed you out of your house an inappropriate scandal with one of the local landlords, for example?”
Miss Dior nodded at her, and said contemptuously, “Control your imagination, Mr Constantine! There are no dark secrets in my past, and I have never been caught up in any scandal.”
“I didn't think so either,” murmured the man.
“This is a very inappropriate conversation!” caroline said furiously.
“Ya, right?” Mr Constantine confirmed. “Why are you staying in Rouen?”
“Oh, how persistent are you!” yells. “I came to Rouen because I wanted to live my own life, not just be an aunt!”
“That I can understand. But, what made you choose Rouen, of all places?”
“I chose Rouen because I have many friends here, and because this place is easy to reach from Chateau Voux.”
“You never regret it? Don't you find Rouen drab?”
Miss Dior shrugged her shoulders. “Yeah, right, sometimes I feel that way, but I would feel the same way, I'm sure, in any place I would stay all year.”
“Jeez, is that what you did?”
“Oh, no! That's an exaggerated statement! I used to visit my older brother and his wife, and sometimes I went to stay at the house of an aunt, who lived in Lyme Regis.”
“Like to have fun, in fact!”
Miss Dior laughed. “No, I'm past the age to have fun.”
“Don't talk nonsense to me!” he said sharply. “You've already left your girlhood despite the times when I doubted it and haven't reached your ripe age, so let's stop the nonsense about your old age.”
Miss Dior sighed angrily, but did not have time to throw a scathing reply at him as it was prevented by Cherry, who re-entered the front of the room, it asked for support in its statement that somewhere in Lansdown was the ruins of the Saxon fortress that King Arthur had invaded. “Archard says no. He said there was no one named King Arthur! He said King Arthur was a legend! But he's not a legend, “ right? Everything is here, in the guidebook, and I wonder what makes Archard think he knows more than the guidebook?”
“Oh, My Lord? exclaim Mr. Constantine, and hastily say goodbye.
