Miss Dior was deeply moved by these words, but tried to take them seriously. “Indeed, I can't imagine why you like me because we're at odds every time we meet. And, I suspect we will continue to do so, no matter how many times we are forced to meet each other.”
“Really?” asked Mr. Constantine, a sharp tone sounded in his voice. “With me it is exactly the opposite!” He saw the signs of rejection Miss Dior showed, and said with a quipped laugh, “Oh, don't worry! I will not speak again until I regret reducing your dislike for me! Meanwhile, let's catch up with Cherry and young Blanchet.”
“Yes, come!” miss Dior said, not knowing whether to feel joy or regret for this sudden change in topic. Seeking to remove the awkward silence, she said, encouraging her horse to start running casually. “Should I tell you that I shouldn't be sure to let my annoyance rule me if only my cousin Belevia didn't choose that unluckiest moment to make me almost wrath.”
“It doesn't surprise me at all,” he said. “If I were forced to face more than five minutes of his unattractive chatter, there would be no other choice but to harm myself. Or himself,” he added, apparently thinking about this second choice. “No, I don't think: the jury, for not recognizing him, would probably have found me guilty of murder. What a terrible injustice there is in the name of the law! How clearly your cousin's case shows us! She, of course, should have been strangled at birth, but I'm sure her parents were less able to foresee the future.”
This speech invites laughter Miss Dior. He turned his head towards Mr Constantine, Miss Dior's eyes were filled with joy, and said, “Oh, how often do I feel the same way! He was the most dull and unwise man ever! When I left Chateau, my brother persuaded me to hire him as a companion, to give me support, and I never stopped feeling astonished to myself for being so foolish as to agree to the request! But it's terrible how much I can say about him. Poor Belevia! He means well, of course.”
“Worse because you can't predict it either. Why don't you ask the Master?”
Miss Dior sighed and shook her head. “I admit, I'm often tempted to do so, but I'm afraid it's impossible. His father, according to what Arthur told me, was very extravagant, and bequeathed to him very little treasure, very pity. So I can't possibly fire him, can I?”
“You can retire him by giving him severance,” suggested Mr. Constantine.
“And, making Arthur interfere with my life by hiring someone else as his replacement? No, thank you!”
“Did he do that? You're letting him bother you?”
“I can't prevent it! I didn't allow him to dictate to me and that's why we've often been at odds! He's older than me, you know, “kan, and no one will ever free his mind from the belief I'm an inexperienced little brother as well as stubborn, until it becomes his duty to guide, to guide, rebuke, and protect me! Which, I admit, is awesome, but he's also annoying and misjudging, and rarely fails to make me so angry!”
“Ah! I thought the reason for suddenly visiting you was more than just his son's toothache! He actually came to warn you not to talk to me, didn't he? Does he suspect I plan to use your kindness? Should I tell her that her suspicions are unfounded?”
“No, of course not!” miss Dior said with a stern attitude.
“I'm perfectly capable of handling Arthur myself. Ah, it's the kids! Let's race to catch them, Mr Constantine! For weeks now, I'd love to ride fast!”
“Ha!” He looked back at Mr. Constantine, as the mare sped up his pace.
Miss Dior preceded her, but Mr. Constantine pursued, and they reached the final destination together, greeted by Cherry with applause and by Archard with reproach because he thought they had set a bad example to Cherry.
“Didn't you mean a good example?” ask Mr. Constantine.
“No, sir, no, because how can I stop it galloping at such a dangerous speed if he has seen Miss Dior do it?”
“As if you could ever stop me if I chose to gallop quickly!” cherry said mockingly. “You can't catch up with me!”
“Oh, can't, huh? If I ride my Blue Devil horse, we'll see!” soon
“Blue Devil will never be able to reach the distance that my Lovely Big Madam has traveled! Oh, sir, that's the name I gave this horse! At first, I thought I'd name him Constantine's Choice, but Archard said he thought you wouldn't care about it.”
“Then I am very grateful to him! I don't really care.”
“Yeah, I meant that name as a compliment!” cherry said, somewhat sad.
“Gosh!” said Mr. Constantine.
Archard chuckled, and said, “What's the story! I also don't like the name Lovely Big Mistress: a lousy name for a horse! But, at least it's better than the previous name!”
“Will we continue riding to visit the Saxon fortress, or would you prefer to stay here with each other?” sela Miss Dior. They quickly apologized, and the entire group moved forward.
