Love Lightning Old Virgin

Love Lightning Old Virgin
CHAPTER XXXIII

The two women received this honor with the appropriate gratitude. Cherry, who was especially surprised by her bouquet of pink and white lilies, exclaimed, “How smart are you, Archard! Are you guessing I'll be wearing my pink dress?”

“Well, no,” the young man admitted. “But, the girl who arranged the wreath for me asked what you looked like, and when I told her you were dark-skinned and had not been introduced to the public, she said pink and white flowers would suit you. And, I admit,” he said boldly, while observing Cherry, “pink does suit you, Cher! I've never seen you look so pretty before!”

Miss Dior, who admires her own bouquet, is strung from the flowers of spring with a color of degradation from very young purple to dark purple, she said, realizing with a deep laugh that Archard might have described himself to the kind florist as a rather old and frail woman. He refrained from questioning Archard, and, with an even greater noble demeanor, refrained from telling him that the wreath, which was tied with a long ribbon, was, wrapped in silver paper around the stalk, although appropriate for dance parties, it is not uncommon for women to be carried at banquets.

About two hours later, Miss Dior felt the satisfaction of knowing not only that the party was a success, but so did her protege. He welcomed his guests with Cherry, and there was nothing shameful about Cherry's behavior. It was not the first time he had given a tacit tribute to Madame Raina, who, whatever her faults, was shown to have taught the boy all the rules of polite conduct.

The red hue that adorned her cheeks when the girl was embarrassed, and her sometimes awkward nature did not make her look bad in the eyes of the most influential mistresses in Rouen, even the elder Madame Mandeville, the harshest critic, who had satisfied Caroline by appearing at the banquet, said to her, “Good girl, Dear. I don't know where you picked him up, or why you supported him, but if he's a Constantine, I have to say he was born into a wealthy family, and you will have no trouble handing it over to a man who suits what you want!”

Mr. Constantine was among the guests who showed up later. Miss Dior had relieved Cherry of her escorting duties, but she herself was still standing at the entrance to the living room as the man climbed the steps on his own leisure. Great Lord Curtis, who, since his arrival, was standing nearby attentively, upon seeing who was coming closer immediately withdrew from around Miss Dior, who had come close to her, while grumbling it would be better if he and “friends it” not face to face. The sudden retreat of Lord Curtis did not escape the sharp eyes of Lord Constantine who was like an eagle. Mr. Constantine said, bowing slightly, then raising the gloved hand of Miss Dior to his lips, “If a gaze could kill, I would have already laid lifelessly in the doorway! How are you, madam? Please accept my congratulations for being able to hold this sebriliant meeting at the beginning of the Season!” He lifted his glasses, and through them observed the crowded room.

“All layers and social standing in Rouen, I see,”. “Who is this amazing woman who is wiggled with a sufficient amount of feathers to cover an ostrich?”

“That, Master,” said Miss Dior, while controlling her trembling lips, “is Lady Wendlebury, one of the leaders in Rouen society. Only Mrs Mandeville's approval was more important than her approval for a girl who had only appeared for the first time in Rouen's public. He brought with him his widowed daughter and granddaughter to my party tonight, which I consider to be one of my successes.”

Mr. Constantine lowered his glasses, and directed his sharp gaze at Miss Dior. “I hope you tell me why you made yourself bother taking care of my annoying niece?” ask him unexpectedly.

“I don't find it annoying,” replied Miss Dior. “Really, he has given me a lot of joy! When I met him, I was feeling uninspired and bored, but thanks to him, that feeling had already disappeared. Come, I will introduce you to Mrs Stinchcombe! Her eldest daughter and Cherry have made a friendship, and I'm sure she wants to get acquainted with you.”

Miss Dior took her away to where Mrs Cheltenham was sitting next to Mrs Mandeville on a very nice sofa leaning in, cornered on the wall, and started an introductory event. To her surprise, Mrs Mandeville said, “No need to introduce her to me, son! Her mother and I were best friends, and I've known her since she was a baby! Well, Damien, how are you? Are you the guardian of that beautiful child? When Caroline told me the girl was Constantine, and the guardian son of her uncle, it did come to my mind you might be her uncle, but to me it seemed impossible!”

“For me it also seems impossible, Madam,” said Mr Constantine with regret.

Madam Mandeville gave him a sharp look. “Makes you feel older than you think, doesn't it? It's time I guess, if everything I've heard about you is true! But, that's not my job! I like your little niece. Not really growing, but the buds are promising. Don't you agree, Madam?”

“Yes, I do agree,” replied Mrs Stinchcombe.

“She made another girl meaningless again.” He smiled towards Mr. Constantine, and said, “You will definitely have a hard time, when the girl is introduced, to get rid of the unwanted suitors, Tuan”

“An interesting, I admit, but dangerous.”

By avoiding the gaze of Mr. Constantine, Caroline responded with a calmness she did not feel at all, “I fear I was forced to invite her, Madam”

“In what way, Miss Dior?” asked Mr. Constantine, his voice sounded excited.

Miss Dior was forced to look at the man, read the blame on his face, and encouraged by the annoyance, threw a stern answer at him, “Cherry forced me to do it, Sir, by inviting him, he said, and begged me to agree to the invitation! Since Damitri was standing next to him, what else could I do except say I would love to see him here tonight?” He saw Mr Constantine's eyebrows clinging to each other, and added quickly, “Please don't blame Cherry! He knew Damitri was one of my friends, and I once told him he could invite anyone he liked.”

“Well, that's a pity,” said Mrs Stinchcombe, “but I don't think any harm would result from it. From what I can see, Damitri will realize how hard it is to tease the girl! Young Blanchet plays the role of a guard dog, and follows Cherry as closely as possible like a wound dressing cloth!” Miss Dior soon found this to be true.

Archard was obviously looking after Cherry, which would have been ridiculous had her hostess been in such a happy mood. Whether the young man was protecting Cherry from Damitri or from Cyril Curtis, each of whom displayed a polite and respectful attitude towards Cherry, is uncertain. Miss Dior could only be grateful that Archard's possessive instincts and jealousy had prompted the young man to behave very much like a dog guarding a bone, and it got satisfaction from the realization that Cherry did not show any liking towards either of the two handsome young men, but simply enjoyed, very innocently, it, new experiences become popular and attract attention.
