Love Lightning Old Virgin

Love Lightning Old Virgin
Chapter XV

The next morning, Miss Dior sent her steward to Chateau Voux with orders to bring her beloved mare to Rouen. The steward brought with him a letter to Mr. Arthur. In that letter, Miss Dior told her sister that she had a young friend who lived with her and she wanted to entertain this friend with horseback riding expeditions to various places of interest in the surrounding countryside.

When she first set up her own residence at Versailles, Miss Dior had brought with her two horse mounts, assuming she would find riding, at Rouen, a daily activity just as it was at Chateau. It did not take long to free his mind from this misunderstanding. In Chateau, he used to ride, as he always did, every day of his life, whether it was riding to the village, to propose to one of his father's tenants who fell ill, or to take a ride, or visit a friend who lives in the neighborhood, but he soon learns that life in the city is mainly in the city like Rouen, where steep gravel cobblestone streets make horseback traffic rarely encountered is very different from life in the countryside. In Rouen, a man on foot or on a chariot, one could not walk to the stables abruptly and ordered the steward of his horse to saddle him. It is important to make time for the horse to be carried around the house: and even more importantly the steward accompanies the horseman.

Miss Dior found this unacceptable, and frankly admitted that it was one of the disadvantages of living in the city. She also admitted (but only to herself) that it was a disadvantage to being an unmarried old girl: she was: but after deciding that the advantage of living in his own house in Rouen because there was no prohibition on the part of relatives, more than the loss, he did not linger complaining in vain, he said, but within a few weeks it sent back its horse to the Chateau Voux. There, Lord Arthur, who was commendable, kept the horse trained and cared for for his sister whenever she came to stay.

Miss Dior kept her chariot in Rouen, and an old reddish and brown horse, who, being an old and beloved friend, could not sell it.

Martin takes a mare to Rouen, but she is accompanied by Mr. Arthur, who is suspicious that his sister has acted recklessly and suddenly decides to help people who could be criminals in disguise. Unfortunately, Mr. Arthur arrives at Versailles and finds only Miss Harrow at home. Upon learning of the woman's situation that has made Caroline acquainted with Cherry, Mr. Arthur becomes convinced that her suspicions are proven to be true.

“How can you be so stupid?” he asked his brother an hour later. “I don't think you can be a fool! What do you know about this young lady? That's right, Caroline”

“Jeez, bullshit!” cut Caroline. “I thought you talked to Belevia, who was so jealous of poor Cherry! She was a Constantine: an orphan, who had lived with one of her aunts since the death of her mother, and because of Lady Raina's poor health, Cherry came to stay with me for a few weeks, as a kind of introduction before she showed up in public. Archard Blanchet drove him here, and”

“Blanchet? A blanchet? Never heard of his name!” asserted Mr. Arthur.

“Very likely you've never heard! He's a kid, I think he hasn't been out of De Strasbourg in a long time. He's the son and heir of Lord Oliver, whom I'm sure you haven't heard of either, because he's a retired businessman who lives in Ome. A family from the Loire Valley, and, even if you haven't heard their names, I make sure they're very honorable!”

“Oh?” said Mr. Arthur, somewhat uninspired. Thinking quickly over this information, he regained his emotions.

“Alright!” abugn. “But how did you know this girl was a Constantine? It's not that I like that connection if he's really a Constantine! The only family member I know is Damien Constantine”

“Uncle Cherry,” by Miss Dior.

“Yeah, I can tell you this!” said Mr. Arthur. “He's a very unpleasant man! No manners, never hesitate to ignore anyone who happens to be disliked, he said, to regard the blood of nobility and his wealth gives him the right to act arbitrarily against a person who is both from a rich or honorable family like himself, and in short a dangerous kind of person I would never hope to introduce to my sister!”

“You mean he's a pervert?” ask Miss Dior.

“Caroline!” Sir Arthur called out suddenly.

“Oh, for God's sake, Arthur!” miss Dior said impatiently. “I threw away my wisdom years ago! If you didn't expect to introduce him to me, what else do you mean?”

He turns his eyes to his sister.

“You don't seem to have any subtlety of mind” lamented angrily.

“What would my poor mother say, if she heard you speak without such subtlety of language? I'm even afraid to think about it!”

“Then, don't think?” Miss Dior suggested.

“Instead, think what Papa will say! Though I'm sure it'll freak you out too! Where did you learn to be so dishonest, Arthur? About Mr. Damien Constantine, just between us, you and Cherry have stirred up a strong desire in me to meet him! The girl told me that her uncle had everything but one of the flaws that you explained to me: and you added one flaw that, of course, was completely unknown to the girl. He must really be a monster!”

“But, I have never met a monster!” exclaim Miss Dior.

“Oh, yeah! I thought it was just a trick, and he was just like any other man!”

“I have to refuse to talk about that man with you. I thought it was highly unlikely that you would meet him. But, if an unlucky opportunity caused him to meet you, I would definitely not do my duty if I did not warn you not to chat with him, My dear Brother! His reputation is not the reputation of a well-behaved man. And, if we're talking about fraud, what reason do you have for thinking you're not the victim of the scam? I'm not trying to hide from you that I'm not at all sure this girl is as innocent as you believe. I know from Belevia Harrow he escaped from his legal guardian, and in the company of a young man! It's not the behavior of an innocent person really, it's the most shocking thing I've ever heard and I wouldn't be surprised if he's definitely trying to catch your attention!”

“You know, Arthur, no one hears you talk stupid stuff like that would believe you have common sense more than zero! How can you be so stupid that you ignore what Belevia said? He's been convinced since the beginning that Cherry conspired in my place, but you can feel at ease about the girl! Cherry's an important heir far more money than I am, I guess! He wouldn't get his inheritance until he was an adult, but he enjoyed what I valued as a considerable income. Mr. Constantine, the guardian, paid the money to Mrs Raina, and it was clear to me that the amount must have been a lot because Mrs Raina gave Cherry what she called allowance, and a girl with less affluent financial condition would think herself lucky to receive alimony to cover the cost of her entire outfit. Madame Raina paid for every dress the boy wore and, although she seemed to be a foolish woman, I must admit that her taste was very good. I'd doubt if he ever took into account any costs he'd incurred for Cherry. No cheap popelin or muslin colored fabric for Miss Constantine!” He laughed suddenly.

“Elle emptied her suitcase, and I can tell that Cherry was so looked up to by her. He told me, in a respectful voice, that Miss Constantine has everything of the highest quality! About her running away with Archard, the situation wasn't so. He escapes from Ome, and Archard kindly acts as his introduction. His aunt had foolishly brought the girl there for a visit, and great pressure was put on Archard to ask for the girl, and on Cherry to accept her. Apparently, this plan had been made years ago by their respective fathers, who were true friends. Archard believed that was the only reason his father tried so hard to make this match a success, but I suspected Cherry's wealth was connected to it all. The land the girl inherited from her father, I concluded, was located close enough to Etretat that the Blanchets were eager to acquire it. Understandably enough, you would say, but can you imagine anything more foolish, in this day and age, than to force their two children to be still children, and to get married when they have been like brothers since childhood?” Mr. Arthur listened to his brother in silence, and did not respond immediately. However, after a while, he said with a cocky accent that he was not a supporter of the freedom afforded to the modern generation.
