Revenge By Law's

Two months later

There are no more media outlets reporting on the arrest of Abhimanyu Alexander. In fact, the name seemed to disappear from the memory of most of the people of this country. Everyone is more busy paying attention to the elections that take place dramatically. Arya Topaz Gumilang, a previously unpopular figure who ran for office only to replace the incumbent, came out as the winner.

The first policy he issued was his promise at the beginning of the candidacy about stopping the island reclamation project and making the island already built as a nature conservation project. Almost the entire community is optimistic that their new leader will be a good leader for them.

Meanwhile, after Abi's arrest, there were some less unpleasant events for the people involved with him. Rinjani was arrested on charges of embezzlement of the Milky Way campaign, Regina was mutated to another area for secretly engaging illegally in an investigation of the Milky Way case. While Indira, his lawyer's license was completely revoked because the lawyer Okan Katalis complaint was received by the Advocate Honor Board, plus the discovery of some evidence that he helped Abhimanyu Alexander during his escape.

In fact, Indira was also almost thrown into prison for violating article 223 of the Penal Code. But, he was helped by Mr. Burhan. Somehow, but Mr. Burhan only spoke a little to the investigators, Indira was immediately released from all charges.

Not only that, Indira was also offered a job at the law office of Mr. Burhan's colleague. Not as an advocate. But, paralegals are the most reasonable jobs for him who has little expertise outside the legal field.

“Thank you for your help during this time,” Indira said as they met in a park.

“Not to think about. To me, you're like my own daughter,” reply Mr. Burhan. “You are happy in your new place?”

Indira looked at the old man. His heart was filled with overwhelming anger. He knew that the bad things he had seen and experienced in the last few months had come from him. But, he had to hold back and pretend to be happy for receiving every favor from her. He had to do it for Abi.

“Sure, of course. For now, I am not in a condition to choose a job. My current job is not much different from before, even the burden is less. So, I'm very happy.”

Mr. Burhan smiled. He was very happy because he thought he had succeeded in making Indira happy. To him, that woman's smile was extremely precious, let alone one created by it.

Since long ago many have wondered about the attitude of Mr. Burhan who always treated Indira very well. Indira is not her relative, nor is she the one who has ever contributed to her. He is not smart, not from the rich, nor can he be said to be beautiful enough to melt the professor's heart.

To date, no one knows the answer, except Mr. Burhan himself and Jack Off the Record.

Twenty-seven years ago

Mr. Burhan looks lethargic. His power had been drained away since a few hours ago. It all started with a phone call he received from the police about an accident experienced by his only daughter. He also has no more tears. All her cries have been spilled since a doctor declared Lasmi Kemuning, her daughter, dead.

The man could only see the news broadcast that aired the accident. The car he was riding in did look badly damaged. Of the five people inside, there were no survivors. And the saddest thing is the condition of the victims' bodies suffered severe damage.

Still imagined in his mind the last face of Lasmi who smiled at him when he was about to go to campus activities.

“Do not consider me a child again. Even now I can imprison the president,” said the beautiful girl jokingly, which made the father laugh.

Mr. Burhan's tears flowed back when he remembered the moment. If he knew this was going to happen, he would have clasped her hand and would not have taken it off for a second.

“If this is indeed a punishment, for which of my sins?” asked Mr. Burhan softly to his friend who is also a judge, Kevin Perdana. The man was the one who drove Mr. Burhan to the hospital and who kept him company.

“Sometimes, punishment is given not to the sinner, but to the wrong person to make a decision,” Kevin retorted.

Mr. Burhan looked at his colleague. He knew Kevin was discussing the verdict he issued for his latest case, namely the case of rape with a convicted child of an official. Despite receiving threats, he kept the perpetrator imprisoned with the maximum penalty.

“I just do my job as a judge,” said Mr. Burhan with tears still breaking on the cheek.

“There's a reason why everyone is after wealth and power,” Kevin said. “That's so they can buy anything, including law.”

Mr. Burhan no longer chimed in on Kevin. He thought about his partner's words seriously. For a long time he aspired to be a just judge, upholding the rule of law under any circumstances. But, if it turned out to be to sacrifice the daughter he loved, the only person who was very valuable to him, he even willingly spit on the law.

“Sorry, are you family from Lasmi Kemuning?”

“Yes, he is his father,” replied Kevin representing Mr. Burhan who seems to have been unable to serve foreigners anymore. “What's up?”

Suddenly the man knelt while holding the leg of Mr. Burhan. Sobs began to sound from his mouth, making Mr. Burhan and Kevin feel very awkward.

“I'm sorry, Sir. But, I ask for help, save my daughter.”

Mr. Burhan could not understand the situation at all. How could he save someone else's daughter, while he had just lost his own daughter?

“Sorry, Sir. Not that I don't want to. But, how to?”

The man took out a picture of a tiny baby whose body was fitted with various medical hoses. He told me that his daughter was having problems with her heart.

“He needs a donor for his liver. We've been trying to find out from the family. But, my heart did not match and his mother had just died. Nothing in the family is suitable. Only his brother's heart fits, but he is still too small to donate.”

Mr. Burhan began to understand the direction of their conversation. “I mean Father, my daughter -”

“We get information from the hospital that your daughter has registered as an organ donor and her heart most likely matches my child. And, instead of wanting to be grateful for what happened to her, but in the present situation, only your daughter is able to save my daughter.”

Mr. Burhan was silent for a moment, then his tears broke again. He had no idea about the organ donation his daughter had done. He also did not expect, even though Lasmi's body had been destroyed, there were still his organs that were able to save others.

“Bby, Sir. Very well. Lasmi will definitely be very happy if she can save the lives of others, even though she is gone.”

The man immediately hugged Mr. Burhan tightly until he unceasingly thanked him. “I promise to repay your kindness. In fact, I will give anything to pay for it.”

A few years later

Mr. Burhan walked down the campus corridor. His face was friendly and greeted every student he met. He is known as the friendliest lecturer and the best judge.

No one knows his true form. He was the leader of one of the largest crime groups in the city. Unlike other crime groups that rely solely on violence in solving various problems, he has something stronger in his hands, namely the law.

Countless times he manipulated the law for personal gain. There's nothing he can't do. Is he no more cruel than any other crime group? Quite the contrary. He is the cruelest of all the violent criminals in this city. In fact, just hearing his name, people would be terrified.

“Do not consider me a child again. Even now I can imprison the president,” said one girl in an annoyed tone.

Mr. Burhan was shocked when he heard it. Those were the words often spoken by his late daughter. Even those were the last words spoken to her.

He immediately peered towards the window, looking for the origin of the sound. It turned out to be from a prospective student who was snapping at the middle-aged man in front of him.

“Papa just wants to make sure you're okay.”

They are a father and son couple.

“I'm fine, even since I was born and you left me, I've always been fine,” said the woman ketus.

“Alright then. Papa go first. Papa is glad you've been to college.”

The man turned around and how surprised Mr. Burhan was when he saw his face. It turned out that he was the man who had once asked Lasmi's liver donor to her. It was Jack Off the Record.
