Indira Christina had just finished tidying up her desk before she left for good. He still heard the voice of his boss from the next room. Although the words that were thrown were very rude and aimed at him, Indira did not deny it. He has indeed made a fatal mistake that is suitable for dismissal.
All the eyes in the office were on him as if he was about to stab his heart. But Indira tried to toughen up and pretended not to see it. In fact, before he made a mistake, he was already ostracized in this office. So, he doesn't really care.
His steps came to a halt right in front of his boss' office who was resting on his feet. They exchanged glances and a tense atmosphere enveloped around them. The other employee peeked as if to find out what was going to happen. Will there be bloodshed or will there be peace?
“Bos,” said Indira lirih with her face. “When will my severance pay be transferred?”
Everyone who heard the question was surprised not to think Indira could still ask the severance casually. Especially the fat man who will soon become his former boss. He again cursed Indira.
The tiny woman saw that she would not get an answer now and chose to run away with a box of her personal belongings. His innocent mind only realized that this time was not the right time to ask for severance.
Indira came out of the office building and stepped towards the side of the road. Before his order came online, he looked back, to the window on the 5th floor where the firm that had just fired him was located. Then, he looked down weakly because he remembered the stupidity he had done. How can he expose the ugliness of his own clients and make them lose, even though the ugliness is stored neatly even from the plaintiff? Like a soldier bombing his own squad when victory is in sight. And he realized that the mistake he made to PT. Adhi Mulya Sejahtera was not the first. Now he has to hold the title of Death Lawyer. Yes, death to his clients.
“Ah, stupid me,” said Indira while banging his head on the taxi window, making the driver hear and realize that the passenger was having a severe problem.
“Newly fired, Mbak?” tanyanya friendly. Indira immediately fixed her sitting position and changed her pouting facial expression.
“I, yes, Sir.”
“Indeed, the present is getting harder. Moreover, the recession that occurred in this country, more and more companies are firing their employees. Though just out of the dark times of the pandemic, we have to face again with another scary situation.”
Indira looked towards the driver. He was confused to give a response like what the driver said because he was fired not because of the economic recession that is afflicting many countries in the world, but because of his stupidity.
Meanwhile, he was reminded of his personal economic recession. His savings were running low because he had just done a lot of spending. In fact, he did not know if there was food in his refrigerator that could be used as his dinner later. In two days, he had to pay his KPR.
He banged his head against the window of the taxi and again cursed at his stupidity.
* * *
Indira took her breath after finishing compiling her thick books into the closet. He also rearranged the objects on his desk to make it look neater. Today was quite tiring for him because he wanted tomorrow his office to be operational soon.
Indira is grateful to have a visionary sister. Mrs Ratih, as she called him, had suggested she start preparing to open her own law office since a month she joined the Top Justice Law Firm. He thinks it won't last long at the firm. At that time he thought his brother predicted he was too good to work under someone else's orders. Now he realized that what his brother predicted was his dismissal.
But Indira is not angry with her only sibling. How not? This law office stands because of its contribution. Starting from the building to the cost to take care of SIUP (Trading Business License) and SITU (Business Place Permit Letter).
Suddenly he received a message from his e-banking app. There was a transfer of five million into his account. He also checked the sender. As expected, it was his father. He immediately transferred back the same amount of money to his father, plus six thousand five hundred rupiah as a transfer fee to a different bank.
Indira stared blankly as if the good mood she had built during the cleaning of this office was damaged suddenly because of the man. Then he heard a voice coming from his stomach and realized that it was time to eat.
His hands immediately played on top of his phone screen. He made a call to someone.
“Halo!”
A voice sounded from across the call. It was the voice of Mrs Ratih, her dear brother. Indira smiled amusedly at the sound of that voice.
“I'm hungry. Can you order food for me?” Indira persuaded her brother with a spoiled voice.
[Hey, I've made a lot of money for your office. Now, just to eat, are you still asking from mbak?]
“That's lucky to have an older brother who married a rich man.”
The older brother pretended to be upset but could not help his laughter. He also promised food requested by his beloved sister.
[You're really serious about your decision, right?]
Indira sighed. This was the umpteenth time that Ratih had asked that. “Iya, I'm serious.”
[But you promised to just take the divorce case, huh? It's okay outside of divorce, but it's still a civil case and the client is a regular person.]
Indira again agreed with her brother's words. Indeed, it was their agreement from the very beginning Indira expressed her desire to open a law office. Incidentally, Indira had always wanted to become a divorce case specialist lawyer. While Ratih only wants Indira to handle cases that are ‘aman’, unlike criminal cases. He does not want his only sister to deal with a criminal.
After the call ended, Indira suddenly felt lonely. He looked around the office imagining his future. Pessimism began to spread to his heart. Will a stupid lawyer who often makes stupid mistakes in handling this case succeed in running his own law office? If his bad reputation as a Death Lawyer spread, would there still be clients willing to come using his services?
Concerns still surround Indira's heart until Padang rice orders his brother arrived. While eating the food, his eyes explored and his head thought about what else was lacking. He also remembered the employees. Paralegal vacancies and secretaries that he has spread through job vacancy sites have not received a single response.
Suddenly his office phone rang. The worry that had haunted him suddenly disappeared. He was convinced that it was a call from his first prospective client.
“Halo, with Indira Christina Law Office and Legal Consultant. Can anyone help?” Indira heard the voice from across with optimism. However, slowly the smile on his face faded. “Oh, Millennial Computer store. Yes, I ordered the printer. Yes, there are also scanners and fax machines. Is the stuff ready? Can transfer? Fine, thank you. I wait.”
Indira hung up her phone with a face full of disappointment. However, he admitted to being wrong for expecting something that was almost impossible. He has not officially opened an office and has never shared an office phone number. How could a client contact him?
The girl continued her eating. The rather alot rendang flesh had not yet been conquered by his teeth. This time he will try it and hopefully it will work.
A few minutes later, the phone rings again. This time Indira did not want to expect much so as not to be disappointed again. He picked up the phone while guessing this time who else was calling his office.
“Halo, with Indira Christina. Who is this, huh?”
Indira's face changed again after hearing the caller's words. This time from an indifferent face turned into surprise then shone full of happiness. After agreeing a deal to meet, Indira hung up her phone and jumped up in excitement. He feels very lucky. Not many advocate offices that have got clients even before the office was inaugurated.
But in the midst of his joy, he was silent for a moment while thinking. There was a name that felt familiar as well as foreign to him.
“Abimanyu Alexander? Is he my acquaintance?”
