KRIIIIIE!!! KRIIIIIE!!! KRIIIIIE!!!
The ringing tone of the phone echoed, breaking the silence of the night and the dream of the owner. Ratih grabbed the object and peeked at the name on his screen.
“Who, Ma?” joseph asked her husband, whose eyes were still closed.
“Indira, Pa,” replied Ratih half whispered. “Sorry if his sleep is disturbed.”
“It's okay. Just lift. Where to know something important.”
As her husband suggested, Ratih answered the call from her sister.
“What's up? You know it's 1pm now, right?”
[Yes, know. You're asleep, aren't you?]
“Indeed I'm a guard guard, this hour hasn't slept?”
[Sorry, yes.]
Ratih was stunned to hear the words of regret from his sister. This time he was sorry. Moreover, Indira just returned yesterday from the hospital.
“What's up? Just tell. Ma'am is planning to wake up soon to prepare cooking ingredients later in the morning. Your greedy nieces asked Mbak to cook something special and complicated how to cook it for their provisions.”
[Hehehe. I just wanted to ask.]
“Ask about what?”
[Anu, would Mbak want to cook instant noodles for me? Instant noodles that used to be Ma'am for when we were little first.]
Ratih sighed. Part of his heart was relieved because his sister called not because of something important, part of his heart was upset because his sister called this late not because something important and should be delivered tomorrow.
“Alright, tomorrow I'll buy her instant noodles. Brands like that are rarely sold and the place I know they sell is only in the store near our home first.”
[I have bought.]
“Oh, good then. Tomorrow just bring it here.”
[But I want it now.]
Ratih's face flushed. Perhaps due to the drowsiness that was still swirling in his head, he could not hold back his anger for too long. “You're not a child anymore! Impossible tonight -”
[So I had a dream mom.]
One short sentence that Indira said was able to reduce her brother's anger, even turning it into sadness and pity. Ratih understood how his sister felt at this moment. Unknowingly, tears began to flow down her cheeks.
“Good, you can come. Ma'am will wait. Or just go there?”
[No need. Let's open the door to the apartment.]
Ratih. He felt stupid because they had talked on the phone since then, even though their distance was not too far away.
“She's been in front of our apartment door since earlier.”
Joseph smiled and was amused by his sister-in-law's behavior. “Yes already, tell our 'firstborn' to come in. He must have been cold since waiting outside.”
Fortunately, Ratih has a very understanding husband. When Yusuf first approached him, Indira was still a child. He became one of the witnesses of Indira's growth from then until now became a lawyer. Indira also stayed with them for a long time. So no wonder if they both consider Indira is their firstborn.
Ratih obeyed her husband. He walked forward and opened the door. And true as her husband alleged, Indira who wore a thick jacket and a hat all black skullcaps were shivering cold. In his hand was a large plastic bag containing instant noodles and various materials to sow the noodles.
“Why didn't you say you were here?”
Indira smiled as she hugged her brother's hand spoiledly. “In case, if Mbak doesn't want me to come, I'll go home without making Yusuf's feelings bad.”
“Stupid!”
Ratih took a plastic bag from Indira's hand and invited her inside. He could not be angry if he saw his brother's indulgence.
Basically Ratih never really got angry at Indira. Even if he was angry, he only did it for a few seconds and tried not to hurt Indira. Fortunately, the younger brother was a good boy who never did anything worthy of great anger..
Ratih's abundant affection for Indira, even though he already has a husband and two children, is inseparable from their heavy childhood. Ratih was born a week before his mother died. His father, Jack Off the Record, was not a good father. He never cared about his children.
When Indira was born, Ratih was only 11 years old. In fact, it was difficult for Ratih to take care of a newborn at such a young age. But he has to do it.
He remembered the day his mother was buried. Although he wanted to, he could not deliver the mother to the final resting place because he had to keep his sister at home. His father was not in place because it is said that at the time he was on duty and difficult to contact.
Until now, Ratih felt sad every time he remembered his mother's funeral. No family was present there. Just some neighbors and servants from the church.
But he was more sad when he imagined his sister, who was still a baby, crying because she needed milk and a hug from the mother. All he could do at that time was understand that their mother was dead and would not come to breastfeed or carry her, although the little baby would not understand what she was saying.
“Mbak, what's mama's favorite food?”
Ratih who was busy stirring the noodles, fell silent while thinking. “Sister is not sure. But, all the food that Jack brought was liked.”
“Ah, hearing that name pisses me off. Moreover, remember his arrival at the hospital last.”
Ratih laughed at the grunts of his brother. Pouring cooked noodles into a bowl, he said, “Meski was also upset to see it, Mbak understood why he came to see you even though he knew it would not be welcomed. That's how old people are. Someday, if you become a parent, you'll understand.”
Indira welcomed the noodles given by her brother. He sprinkled fried onions and added a little sauce.
“Already, we don't need to discuss that damned man. Better tell me more about Mom. What is the most obvious resemblance of the two of us?”
“Muthak, the answer is nose and lips. Even when you were just born, everyone who saw you was surprised because it was like looking at mama.”
“Yes, even when I was a child, I remember some neighbors saying, it was fitting that my mother died because we were so similar,” Indira said suddenly moody, making Ratih feel guilty. “If mom had seen my face, would she have thought the same?”
“Don't hear those stupid words. I also look like the old man, but until now he is still healthy wal afiat.”
They both laughed again. That night, they reminisce about the many things they have gone through in the past. Although they could currently reminisce about it with a smile, they could not forget the pain they had to endure as they had to struggle through the days without the affection of both of their parents.
