A few days later, a tense figure of Marcus was standing in front of the room that read 'Private'. Just this time the cold man felt sweat drench his spine and descend to his waist.
This was the first day Nate entered work and the man had called his assistant to come into his room. He will be reunited with his superiors, since the incident a few days ago at Nate's penthouse.
After the incident, Nate contacted Marcus more often by phone or email, and did not allow him to come to his house at all.
For the first time in his life, Marcus felt a great longing for someone. And that longing he was referring to a little girl who did not understand the meaning of life at all.
He wanted to meet the person he missed but before, Marcus knew he had to conquer first the person behind this door.
Swallowing his saliva, the cold man entered his superior's room.
At the end of the room, his boss was sitting quietly. Reading glasses perched steadily on his nose. His two gray eyes were staring at his assistant who was slowly approaching his desk.
Stopping at the end of Nate's desk, Marcus said flatly as usual. He tries to hide his true feelings behind his everyday mask.
"Master called me?"
Nate's left hand, still clutching the ballpoint pen, slowly moved towards his chin. Seen his thumb rubbing the end of his chin that began to darken. The expression of his superior seemed to judge the man standing in front of him.
The man behind the table leaned his back and put down the pen he was holding. He cupped both hands on the table. The ring embedded in his ring finger looks shiny reflecting the afternoon sunlight that enters through the window.
"Sit down, Marc."
A little hesitant, Marcus sat down in front of his boss.
For a while, the two men looked at each other intently. Measure each other's strengths.
Nate knew very well that Marcus was the type who was actually loyal to one person. Although the man often bergonta-turned-partner, but never anything he gave hope.
Marcus was only using those women for his external needs. He has not found his heart until now. The problem was, the one who managed to grab the cold man's heart was his own daughter, who was currently only 1 year old!
As a father, Nate certainly did not want his daughter to be approached by a man who was clearly many times the age of his child. Moreover, his daughter was still very toddler, making the man become excessively worried at this time.
Opposite him, Marcus' mind swirled around, thinking of how to deal with his superior. He knew that he would lose heavily on his strength and battle techniques. It would be in vain if he dared to challenge his superiors to compete in the arena.
To brainstorm himself, Marcus was still quite confident. But still, Nate was his mentor all along. There was no way he would be able to easily win from his superiors, let alone use the tactics that his own mentors had taught him.
Clenching both of his hands, Marcus started to feel despair in his heart. He has absolutely no advantage when compared to his superiors. He did not have anything he could use as bargaining power to negotiate over the man's daughter.
Unknowingly, the cold man lowered his head deeply.
"Do you feel defeated?"
The question made Marcus raise his head. His superior's roar looked displeased and his eyes flashed very sharply. His black pupils in the middle of his young gray eyes looked clearer and looked terrifying.
"You haven't tried and you've lost?"
"I-"
"stand."
Confused by the instructions, Marcus stood up from his seat. He saw his superior rise up and began to circle the table, approaching him.
Unexpectedly, his superior slapped his right cheek violently, making Marcus' head turn away.
Both of his eyes were wide open and pushy as he stared at the floor.
"Start this second. I, Nathanael Axelle release you Marcus Corentin, as my subordinate, and also my most loyal follower."
The pledge from his superior made Marcus's eyes blink rapidly. He looked at the man who was standing very quietly in front of him.
"Master, I-"
Back Marcus felt a loud slap from Nate, this time on his left cheek.
"And starting this second, too. I forbid you to call me 'Master'."
Seeing the cold man in front of her not saying anything, made Nate speak again.
"Aren't you going to say anything to me?"
Nate's tone and manner of speaking changed. Marcus realized that the man in front of him had taken him as someone else. Not the closest person anymore.
"Whatever you want, Marc. It's your own choice and it's none of my business."
Slowly, Nate approached a large window that featured a view of the setting sun. Orange light began to shine in the vast room and formed dark shadows in its corners.
From where he stood, Marcus looked at Nate's figure who started to form a silhouette on one of the walls of the office room. The two men were silent in their respective minds.
"Twenty years."
Marcus's head was raised looking at the man who finally turned to face him. Both of Nate's hands seemed to fit into his pants pocket and clenched tightly inside.
"I gave you 20 years to prove you were worthy of my daughter. Are you able to fulfill it, Marcus Corentin?"
"Tu- Sir?" The cold man gulped his saliva with great difficulty.
"It's up to you to prove yourself. Obviously, I don't want you trying to compete with me or trying to beat me, Marc. Because it won't do any good. Be yourself. Find out who you are and find the thing you want to do most in your life."
Marcus' body trembled at the words of the man he had admired and respected for almost half his life. Again the man made him unable to escape from the shadow of his admiration.
"When you find her, go back and ask my daughter to be your life partner. That's if he still hasn't found your replacement."
Nate's mocking smile managed to get Marcus ignited by his emotions. Both of the cold man's hands clenched tightly at his sides.
"I'm not going to disappoint you."
Marcus' hoarse voice rang out in the room.
"I'll come back and claim your daughter."
Nate's gray eyes squeaked and his jaw hardened.
"I'll wait for that moment. And now that you're still my employee, I'm assigning you to find your replacement within 2 months."
Nate was seen sitting back at his big desk. One of his hands swung, seeming to chase away the cold man in front of him.
"Now get out of my room, and do your duty until your last day."
Both of Marcus' eyes were glazed over. It turns out that he was not wrong in choosing his life path. He has chosen the best man to accompany to this day and now, it is time for him to walk his own path at the request of the man.
Marcus' body bent deeply and his voice trembled as he let out a sound.
"Good, Sir. And thank you for being my boss all along."
Before the cold man opened the closed office door, Nate's voice came back from behind him.
"Oh yes, Marc. I'm sorry I slapped you."
Marcus' head turned to look at Nate, and subconsciously one of his hands rubbed his cheek that the man had slapped.
"There really is no meaning. I just wanted to beat you up because you had dared to approach my daughter. And as I recall, you haven't felt a slap from me in all this time."
Marcus could see the look in Nate's contemptuous eyes and his smirking mouth.
The cold man was feeling extremely annoyed at this moment. It seemed that Nate was deliberately igniting her emotions. The man had just slapped him this time but in the past, he had beaten Marcus to a pulp and could not get out of bed for days.
"Do you want to repay me now?"
One of Nate's eyebrows shot up. Challenged him. He was deliberately looking for a fight. Unfortunately, Marcus is not hooked. The man had learned too much from himself all along.
"No Sir. I'll reply to you, when I've succeeded later. You just wait."
Afterwards, Marcus exited the room and closed the door.
After Marcus died, Nate opened his glasses and leaned his back against his chair. One of his hands covered his eyes. He feels very tired at the moment.
There was a ringing from his cell phone on the table. Smiling, he lifted it up.
"Hello. Are you done, baby? Go upstairs and bring Nat. I miss him."
Hearing his wife's words across the phone, Nate seemed to sigh.
"I've done what you asked, Lin. And I don't actually like it. You should be punished. So, go up now or you'll receive the consequences later at home."
