Husband For One Year

After lunch, Marien and William took a short stroll down the pier to pass the time. A paper bag carried by Marien made William suspicious especially Marien did not allow himself to carry the object.

Marien was intentional because he did not want William to see if in the paper bag there was a gift. However, he felt William did not need to be involved with the problems he was experiencing with his brother.

The two of them stopped for a while to sit on the side of the pier. Marien sat on a chair while William sat by his side. Seagulls fly low to find food. The Birds were not even afraid of the humans passing by around them.

"Where are you going after this?" ask Marien to William.

William looked at the circular clock in hand before answering a question from Marien. He'd better go back with Marien and spend more time at home and his work is done and he can continue tomorrow.

"Not going anywhere. Let's just go home if you don't want to go anywhere!"

"alright. I think we should just go home. Here there is nothing to see but seagulls!"

"You're right, give me your stuff. Let me take him!" pinta Williams.

"No need, I can take it myself!" push Marien while moving.

"Why, Marien? Is that an important thing so I can't carry it?" William was suspicious.

"No, I just don't want to bother you!" Marien got out of her seat and pushed William away. William did not ask any more, the suspicion that Marien was hiding something from him grew stronger. He would return to ask later after they arrived home.

A taxi was dismissed. Marien helps William to get in the car. So far William has seen no pretense of what Marien did to him. Maybe Marien was a little different but what did he expect? They were only bound for one year and after that, they were both strangers who would walk on different paths.

Marien smiled as William looked at her without turning away. Marien even looked to the right and to the left because he thought William saw something beside him.

"Is there a stain on my face?" marien asked while rubbing her face.

"Yes!" William rubbed Marien's face, as if there was a stain there that didn't really exist.

"really?" Now Marien rubbed his entire face.

"It's clean, it doesn't need to be cleaned anymore."

"If so thank you," Marien smiled and turned away. Somehow he feels closer, if they are always together like that maybe they will get closer again and of course it should not happen because they already have an agreement.

They were both silent, on the way. Until now, Marien had never asked the real ready William even he did not look curious about the man. William could not have told himself so easily to Marien. She waited for Marien to ask but unfortunately, not a single question came from Marien.

Marien again helps William to get out of the car after they arrive. He did so carefully while helping William to sit in his wheelchair but again Marien did not want to give his belongings to William when William again asked Marien to give all his luggage to him.

Suddenly William became upset, he seemed useless so Marien did not trust himself just to bring one item.

"Am I really useless to you, Marien?" finally the question was asked too.

"Is this disabled man useless to you that you can't count on?"

"Not so, William. I don't think you're like that?" Marien was getting clueless because William was angry with her.

"Look at me, what to carry just one can't? Do you underestimate me or do you want to insult me?"

"No, I didn't mean it that way!"

"If so explain it to me. Why don't you need me and trouble yourself? I can't move both my legs but both my hands can!"

Marien had not answered, he was looking for why William was suddenly angry like that and without him knowing William became upset because he always refused the help he offered Marien.

"I didn't mean to offend you, William. Really!" marien.

"If so what did you bring? Why is it so precious as if I can't touch it?"

"It's not important!" Marien stepped past William, and, they should not argue more than that especially for something that is not important but William has not stopped because he wants Marien to rely on him and say whatever he is going through even though he is only her husband for the next year.

"We're not done yet, Marien!" said it.

"I don't like to fight, William. It's not important, it's just a gift I'm gonna give Alexa!" marien said as she lifted the paper bag she was carrying.

"To you is not important, but to me it is important. I'm your husband, until one year down the line and I think you remember that. Even though I'm just your paid husband but I want you to count on me and trust me. I want to be useful to you but it seems you don't want my role in your life even you didn't tell me why you should buy a present for that big brother you hate. Are you like Fiona who thinks I'm useless?"

"No, it's not that!" marien answered who was still standing on William's back.

"Then, why are you treating me like a useless husband?"

"I didn't?"

"You did it, Marien. Many times I have offered to help but you have always refused as if my hands are useless or do you consider me useless all this time just because I'm your paid husband?"

Marien did not reply, he was confused because he did not mean to offend William. Though he did not want William to know and then get involved with his problems with Alexa but his attitude actually made the man offended. They were both silent, William was no longer waiting because he knew what answer Marien would give.

William went past Marien who was still silent, it seemed like he was too deep into his role as Marien's husband when it was clear that they were bound by a covenant. Marien needs herself to avoid the marriage she has to run and she needs Marien to avoid Fiona's betrayal and insults. He had completely forgotten that that was the role of the two of them. It seemed like she was lulled with the kindness that Marien had shown her all along.

Marien stepped onto the sofa, why did she feel guilty? He did not mean to treat William that way, he did not mean to offend William but all he did was simply to not involve William alone because at this moment, William was trying to get up. If Alexa finds out, she's afraid William ends up like her. It is difficult to get a job even worse, the effort made by William to rise will be in vain because of Alexa.

Don't let that happen so William is back to being Fiona's laughingstock. She just wanted to protect William from his crafty brother. Then what he did was wrong but until now, he did not know the husband he married suddenly.
