Kendall pushes the body up, and soon realizes that her upper body is not strong enough to climb up the next rung. Just when he was afraid that his arm would give up, a sturdy arm held his butt and pushed. Kendall's body was shocked to be touched in private and spontaneously wanted to protest, but she could not deny that she needed David's help. Kendall climbed a few more steps and after starting to feel more in balance, she glanced down and saw David waving with a smile.
"I'll wait here" said the man with both hands forming a funnel around the lips.
*Kendall keeps climbing, resting when it's about halfway through. It was like a dream to be among the towering trees while the wind swayed the twigs and made the leaves dance. I wonder what tree it is. Evergreen (a plant whose leaves are green all year round)*the wavy ones are easily recognizable, but it knows as much evergreen diversity as the bones in the human body.
"You okay there?" exclaim David
Kendall looked down and gave a thumbs up, then climbed up again until she reached the huge tower's courtyard. He remembered David's warning and carefully stepped from the stairs to the iron court, exhaling a sigh of relief as he could trace something solid again.
Kendall circled the chest-high fence to the front of the tower overlooking the valley and had to hold her breath looking at the natural scenery that stretched out in front.
The mountains in the distance were covered in lush foliage that moved like ocean waves as the wind blew over it. Her hair danced around her face. Kendall looked up at the sun and inhaled a deep breath, realizing how fresh the air was at that height. The fragrance's intoxicating.
Beneath it, a tree-covered plain stretching from the tower to the foot of the ravine, from there the path to Happiness looked like a man-made black ribbon splitting a thick expanse of red earth. From here, of course David Booker can see clearly the motorcade that came.
The movement on the fence caught Kendall's attention. The back of the work clothes folded on the fence fluttered in the wind. Kendall imagined David's bare chest the first time she saw the man yesterday, this must be his shirt. Kendall lifted the shirt off the fence. The cotton cloth is soft because it is often used, still a little damp because of the rain last night before finally dried the morning sun.
He brought the shirt to his nose, his masculine scent still lingering. It made him react and the intensity surprised him.
Then Kendall realized her phone was shaking.
*He remembered the reason for climbing the tower, then took the phone out of his place. The signal is strong and indicates that voice messages and e-mail* are being sent to his inbox. How easy it is to connect with the outside world again.
His heart was racing as he pressed the number to listen to the voice message. Did the guy call? Does the man know that Kendall has already left Denville and realizes how much she loves him? Does the man regret having broken his heart? Will he apologize and ask her to come back?
No. gabe.
The voicemails were mostly related to the termination of water and gas services in his apartment. With growing disappointment. He knows that his 'former' fiance is not the man he imagined he would be, but Kendall still loves him and once planned a future with him.
The last message came from Cara Delevingne. The sweet voice of his friend made Kendall smile. He did not really know Cara. They have only been acquainted since Kendall moved from the house she lived in with her former fiancee to an apartment complex near Cara's residence. But when they meet in a yoga class, they immediately fit in with each other.
When Kendall tells her that she is considering joining a group of women who will move to Happiness, Carolina, Cara is quite supportive. He had read the ad and could understand why women were attracted by the promise of free accommodation for three years and many burly and single men. But when Kendall asked if Cara was tempted by the offer, her friend simply laughed, saying that she grew up in a place more or less the same as Happiness, and have no intention of returning to such a life.
"Just make sure you've arrived at your destination." Chirping Ways. "Call me if you have time."
Kendall pressed the number of her friend, her heart carefree as Cara answered on the first ring.
"How to Delevingne."
Kendall imagines her friend sitting behind her desk. "How, this is Kendall."
How to call out in shock. "Hey, you're apparently. Where are you now?"
"You won't believe me if I tell you."
"Just try it."
"I was at the top of a tower above a small town called Happiness, in Carolina."
How to silence a few seconds. "I don't believe."
Kendall laughs. "really. I had to climb up here to get a cell phone signal."
"Indeed," said Kendall. "But beautiful. As far as the eye can see there are only trees and mountains."
How to cluck, almost envious. "How are the people?"
"The people who put the ad, the Booker brothers, are pretty good, but I think they expect too much. They're not ready for the arrival of a hundred women."
"The Booker sisters are certainly single and they don't know how to deal with women."
"really. I think they've all served in the military. And it looks like they grew up here. I had no idea that the men were trying to rebuild their hometown. I wonder if they get carried away so they don't use common sense."
"North Man seems to think he can handle any situation." Approving way. "So.. speaking of the Northern man, have you met any interesting ones?"
"No."
"Anytime you answer my question. You sure?"
"Yes. Just imagine, his sister fell from this tower. So, once I get to town, I have to take care of the broken leg."
Laughing way. "Well, the fall must have been quite far. Is that all that broke?"
"Yes, it's unbelievable, right? By the way, I had to take care of him."
"Hm... Is he handsome?"
Kendall skirted down the fine cloth of David's shirt with fingers.
"Only if you like muscles, hazel eyes are piercing and chin is cut."
"Well, that sounds promising."
Kendall laughs. "I'm not interested. After all, he and Hailey Baldwin are already eyeing each other."
"Oh, yeah. Hailey. How can he survive without a hair salon?"
Kendall laughs. "Actually, he seemed at home, telling everyone. It was me who decided not to stay."
"Why not?"
Kendall hesitates. "I thought coming here would make me forget about that guy and all the plans we've made. But somehow, my feelings are worse." Tears stung his eyelids and he tried to control the sound.
Sighing way. "I thought it would happen. There was something while in the village, away from the technological disruption and hustle and bustle of the city, that made people feel more emotional. It's hard to explain it to people who haven't experienced it, but the mountains have their own way of teasing people."
"I just realized," said Kendall, while staring at the magnificent view of blue and green in front of him.
"But don't be fooled" said Cara. "Village life is not as romantic as it seems. So are the boys."
Cold shower, no medical facilities. "I'm starting to realize that as well" Kendall said flatly. "Life here doesn't suit me."
