New Happiness, Begins

New Happiness, Begins
The Part 39

Kendall pressed Cara Delevingne's number and smiled as Cara answered. "What a miss from here" said Kendall.

"Kendall! You're still in Happiness? I thought you were back in Denville."

"There is a situation that requires."

"Is it something to do with that guy over there?"

Kendall straightens up. "No. My car's still not repaired, and I'm taking care of an injured deer."

"You're a veterinarian now?"

"No. But no one else can take care of it. Then Oscar's not well either."

"Oscar?"

Kendall feels bad. "Hailey Baldwin's dog is food poisoning."

"Do you have no human patients?"

"Right now it's just David Booker" Kendall murmured.

"Ah... he took advantage of his broken leg?"

"It's also food poisoning."

"How did this man and Hailey's dog both get food poisoning?"

"The Hailey,"

Laughing way. "I think that's one way to make people angry. But there's nothing sick in there?"

"Many women develop allergies, but male workers don't seem to like female doctors. There's an old man with a simple drug they can go to."

"Male self-esteem" Cara said sourly. "North men are willing to die for the sake of women, but the attitude of knights has two sides. No matter how modern they claim to be, they are still conservative. They don't want women to see when they're weak."

"The more excuses I have to leave" Kendall said.

"My former boss is looking for a replacement for me, but I don't have any plans for Denville."

"Where are you going?" ask Cara.

"I think maybe Atlanta, even though I've never been there. You got any advice?"

"The city is big and hot. The job market is better than where you are now. And I think you'll find the culture a little more diverse there."

Kendall laughs. "Maybe I'm going there but it's close."

"sorry. What's the matter with you?"

Sighing way. "It's still waiting to see if I'm going to be in charge of the state. Just pray for it."

"Surely," said Kendall, then bid farewell to her friend. When he broke the phone, he felt a sting of regret. If he doesn't return to Denville, he'll miss Cara. But after hearing her ex-fiancee's voicemail, she wasn't sure she could come back. He still cannot forget and it is likely that his former fiance still has the power to hurt him.

Kendall called Doctor Amanda and after waiting for a while, heard the woman's friendly voice across the street. "Kendall, how are you?"

"I'm fine" Kendall lied, though saying that alone made her feel even more carefree.

"I'm glad you called, I was planning on calling you. Looks like I've found a doctor who wants to come to Happiness to work at the clinic."

Why doesn't that make him as happy as he should be? "It's great" said Kendall. "Who?"

"Doctor Fai Kadra. He was eager to work in a rural clinic in order to make a difference. But he wanted to visit first to see if he liked the city."

Kendal recorded the doctor's contact information and promised to give it to the Booker brothers. "And soon this city will have a wireless internet connection, so communication will be easier." Doctor Amanda said she's still looking for people for other positions and will be in touch. He ended the conversation by asking if Kendall would return to work at his practice.

"I haven't decided yet" Kendall admitted. "But thank you for your offer. I'll give you the answer soon."

Kendall disconnected her phone and took the time to stare at the scene in front of her. That place is so right for reflection. The valiant mountain peaks, towering trees are arranged naturally, and plus the air is very refreshing. Nature is not interested in human problems, it just keeps moving forward. Lessons for its residents, Kendall muses. After relaxing for a while longer, he glanced at the watch and decided to go home. For now, at least he's got patients to watch, though most of the creatures are four-legged.

Kendall went down the stairs carefully and stepped on the seat of the ATV, then lowered the body to the ground, strangely feeling great for already driving the vehicle to the top of the mountain and climbing the tower... things he had never imagined he could do weeks before. Now he can see how the rural environment produces resourceful individuals, how it has instilled determination in the Booker brothers to face nature and rebuild a city from scratch.

But he could admire their purpose without being sucked into it.

Kendall put on a helmet and started the engine. As he stepped on the gas pedal, the wheels of the vehicle spun, flying the ground and leaves. It reduces the pressure on the pedals and glances at the rear wheels. A glittering object stood out amidst the rubble. Recalling the watch he found, Kendall braked and got off the vehicle to check.

Turned ring.

The gold jewelry looked fragile in the palm of his hand, when it was actually quite heavy and probably very valuable. Is that another artifact that was brought here by a storm ten years ago? Kendall felt sad and astonished for the person who lost the ring and was astonished because he had found it accidentally. Is the owner still looking for him? There was no inscription engraved in the gold, but the secret of the ring might be more revealed after it was cleaned. Kendall put the thing in her pocket, then climbed the ATV and down the slope, impatiently meeting David to show her findings.

And not for any other reason.

Previously, the journey down the mountain was usually faster than the ride, but Kendall drove slowly and it felt like a long time ago she saw the roof of the dormitory among the trees. After stopping the ATV at where David used to park, he throws a helmet and rushes into the building.

His first stop was the practice room to make sure, as he suspected, that no one was waiting to be checked. He went in to check on the two animals that had been moved to the bathroom. The deer was lying on the floor of the shower glass chamber, still sleeping as a result of an injection of drugs to prevent him from standing on the foot of the cast at least one more day. Kendall watched as her ears twitched and her chest rose and fell regularly. The animal is not out of danger yet, but so far the development is good.

Outside the shower room, Oscar falls asleep in the dog bed Hailey had prepared. The animal lies on its side and occasionally moves its adorable legs. The animal is well enough to return to Hailey's room, but seems reluctant to leave the deer, screeching and sniffing again as Hailey tries to persuade him to stay away. Now, he agreed to let Oscar stay near there.

Kendall leaves the practice room and goes into the next bedroom, where David recovers. He hesitated, wondering if Hailey was inside with the man. Might as well. He raised his hand and knocked. "David? It's Kendall. Can I come in?"
