Kendall left Kristofer long enough to get back to Masson. "Mrs. Dean," he said. "I'm sure you have a reason not to trust me. But believe me when I say I just want to help you. I don't like to see a capable, strong man like you lose a hand because of something you're supposed to be able to prevent."
Masson looked lethargic. "Dok Kris did nothing wrong while treating me."
"I'm sure so," Kendall agreed. "But the situation is changing.Your wounds may have gotten worse on their own."
Masson bit his lip, then unfolded his hand and extended it towards Kendall. David gasped to see the reddish swollen flesh around the twisted dirty duct tape.
"Yes, it looks like it's an infection" said Kendall softly. He smiled to calm Masson down. "I'll change your bandage and give you antibiotics." But as he stood up and looked at David, his face was sad. "Please take him to the clinic."
The next hour passed by vaguely. The two men were transferred to a new clinic. There, Kendall gave Kris the medicine to relieve chest pain, then rushed to pump the man's stomach. After that he turned his attention to Masson Dean and convinced the man that the infection should be treated with antibiotics infused. After the cure flowed, Kendall carefully removed the large masking tape of Masson's gaping wound, then began to bandage the wound properly. Harry stood not far away, talking about the state of the two workers. After his body had relaxed, it was clear that the two men would be fine.
David watched everything through the glass window. As he watched Kendall work in a lithe and efficient manner, his chest tightened with a sense of pride and other unfamiliar emotions. When faced with an emergency, he really felt grateful and relieved to be able to ask Kendall for help. What was their fate after the woman left? In the end they could definitely convince the other doctors to come to their growing city, but did that person have the determination like this young lady?
"He's great, right?"
David turned his head and saw Daniel standing there as well, observing Kendall. David put on a flat face. "It's an important asset to our society."
Daniel clucking. "But is society here an asset to him?"
David attempted to count to ten, but only managed to get to three. "I don't think you're the right person to decide what's good for Kendall."
Daniel raised an eyebrow. "You think you're the one? You've known Kendall for, how many weeks?"
"A person's character can be known in a short time" David said sharply, observing Daniel's neat clothes and expensive shoes.
Daniel also observes David, staring at sweat-stained shirts, dusty jeans and dirty casts covered in dirt. "I totally agree."
David knew his dislike for the man in front of him was unwarranted... Daniel didn't hurt her personally. And the fact that the man was wearing a fine shirt didn't make him a bad guy. David admitted that the crush of anger in his chest was jealousy. He was jealous because the man knew Kendall first and knew the woman enough to persuade her to leave Happiness.
That's not fair, David admitted. He was responsible for Kendall's departure.
But, it seems that not everyone wants to stay here.
He starts the engine and directs the ATV to the dormitory. Looks like the new movie is over. When the lights were turned on, David came to the front of the room and asked everyone for attention.
"I just want to tell everyone, especially the workers in this room," he said, staring at the faces of the workers who had been very loud stating their disapproval to see the female doctor, "that Dr. Jenner has helped two of our residents tonight, Kristofer who almost had a heart attack and Masson Dean who almost lost a hand. If only Masson had let Doctor Ma treat his hands, he wouldn't have had to go through any of this." He let the information be understood. "Doctor Jenner has truly treated us with more care and respect than we have shown her. I'm sorry to have to announce that he's leaving."
"Go?" said one of the women, sounding angry. "We can't stay here if there's no doctor."
The other women concur in unison, many of whom stand. David let them talk. If the men realize that the women do not want to live there without a doctor, they will probably treat the doctor next.
Suddenly David sees Kendall coming into the back of the room. The woman looked small, tired and seemed to be searching. As their eyes met, David's chest thumped and the realization struck him like lightning. That was why he felt a mysterious pain behind the breastbone every time they were close together. After that understanding permeated and his emotions unraveled, his vital signs soared.
Then swooped in as Daniel walked in behind Kendall and wrapped one arm around her waist in a possessive manner.
Gradually, everyone in the room was aware of Kendall's presence. They looked over and the room went silent for a few seconds. Then one of the men stood up and began to clap slowly. Gradually, everyone joined until the room boisterously clapped and everyone stood saluting their doctors. David's chest was claustrophobic by the feeling of pride.
Kendall looked confused. His face gradually reddened as he raised his hand to reject the award. But at last he smiled as well and nodded in thanks, accepting the handshakes of the people who were lining up to leave the room.
"I hope you'll stay" that's what David heard, said by more than one person.
"I beg you, stay."
"I hope you consider it again."
Only Daniel seemed unhappy with the outpouring of attention. As David limped back to where they were standing, Daniel blatantly looked at him with anger. David ignored the man and turned to Kendall. "You're the queen of this clock."
