Kendall forced herself to smile. He began to suspect something was wrong, especially when he walked out and saw four other men sitting in his waiting room, all smiling widely.
"Business is growing!" khloe said her cheeks were red.
"It seems so," Kendall chimed in, then raised her index finger. "I'm out for a minute." He walked down the hallway, quietly following his last patient in a safe distance. The man came out of the dormitory, then dyed and went into the grove of trees at the end of the path. Kendall followed, trying her hardest not to make a sound and slowing down when she heard voices.
He brushed a branch of bush and saw David Booker sitting on the ground a few meters from there, David's back leaning against a wide tree trunk, the crutches lying not far away, talking to the Dandruff Man, he said, who stood looming nearby while nodding. Then David took a wad of money out of his shirt pocket, took some strands and handed them to Kendall's "patient. After the man left, David looked satisfied, pulled the tip of the hat over his eyes and leaned back against the tree.
Kendall gritted her teeth and broke through the bushes towards him. The man heard a voice, lifted a hat and then his eyes widened. "Walking around, Doc?"
Kendall stopped. "You! You pay your workers to come to me and complain about trivial things?"
"Wooo" said David, raising one hand. "Not as you think. I'm just offering them some time off to get paid to see the doctor if you have any complaints you can check."
"Dandruff?" scream Kendall. "You mouth?"
"Hey, those complaints make sense," David insisted, "especially now that there are women here." He grabbed the crutches and tried to stand up. "Can you help me?"
Kendall reached out reluctantly to help the man stand up. Which turned out to be a mistake, because when David was on equal footing with him, he could not avoid eye contact with those sharp brown eyes. His blood rippled and his breath jolted, just like yesterday when the man almost kissed him. Even worse, David looked as if he was about to try again. Kendall soaked her lips, then remembered the reason for her arrival to that place. He pulled his head back. "Don't try to divert the conversation."
David sneering. "Come on, Little Doctor Ma'am. I just wanted to help. I thought if I could convince them to come to you for trivialities, the workers wouldn't be too reluctant if there were more serious illnesses to come to you for treatment."
Kendall's ruffled waist. "This act of yours is very demeaning! Don't you dare help me, Mr. Booker. The only reason they had to come to me was because of the medical degree that stuck in my name."
"I know" said David and sighed. "But they're macho northern men. They have self-respect. They'd be clumsy to let a woman as beautiful as you see them in pain."
The phrase "woman as pretty as you" snatched Kendall like a slap. David mocks her. All her praise, the incident almost kissed her yesterday and today, just to manipulate her.
"No," Kendall said flatly, "they don't have to be clumsy to see me as their doctor because I won't be here. Remember that? By the way, I found the contract you tucked in the map yesterday. You should have told me first." Kendall sneezed hard, then threw out snot.
"I want to give you time to read it in the hope that you change your mind. You okay?"
"Allergi," Kendall murmured while rubbing her eyes. "And I haven't changed my mind. In fact, I called my ex-boss yesterday and he's looking for my replacement here."
David looked surprised. "Well, I appreciate your efforts to help us."
Kendall folded her hands. "Well, by the way, how's my car repair progress? Is the new gas line coming?"
"Ehm. they should have brought him from Atlanta, if there was still a place."
Kendall squinted. "I just found out the gas line has a huge size."
The loud sound of the horn was heard many times, the longer it sounded the louder. David frowned, then moved towards the direction of the voice and Kendall followed. They emerged from behind the trees and saw two long freight trucks stopping in front of the dormitory. Hailey waved from the passenger seat of the first giant truck.
"Oh my God" murmured David.
Kendall smiled at him. "it looks like they have a place."

Instead of being calm, Harry looked more and more riled up like a bull in brackets. His face grew red, his hands clenched. Finally, he stopped and placed his hand on the table. Smoke practically billowed from his nose. "I don't even know where to start."
"Just tell me all the arrogant things you have to say so we can get back to work."
Harry's eyes glared. "Back to work? You mean drop off stuff from the big trucks out there for those women? Because from what I've seen, not much work has been done!"
"We made a lot of progress with the clinic,"
"That's no use to us if there's no doctor managing. Has Doctor Jenner signed the contract?"
"Not yet" murmured David
"Even our development will not be considered if we do not have doctors on staff. We've started building clinics and we can't stop now."
David won't tell you that Kendall has been spreading information to find a replacement. He was not ready to give up the family land. "I just need more time to convince Little Doctor Ma'am, that's all."
"So you're gonna keep holding him hostage and lying about the car?" ask Harry
"obvious. By the way, I told him that a new gas line should be brought from Atlanta, so if he asks you, pretend to be stupid."
"That's your job. I hear you're paying people to make up excuses to treat him?"
"They all have a reason" David said. "Things-problems.little."
Harry rolled his eyes. "How did it work?"
David frowned. "Not as good as I expected."
Harry pointed at David. "You, stay away from her."
David backwards. "What about our deal?"
Harry shook his hand. "I was going to give you that land, David."
David looked at Harry. "Really?"
Harry nodded. "Let me take care of Doctor Jenner. Maybe he's responding to common sense."
David's temporary excitement about the land deed is strangely diminished when he learns that he no longer has a reason to get close to Kendall. "But I'm the only patient!"
