"Maybe we have to break your other bones to keep the doctor busy" Harry suggested. "Back to the problem. You should have sent someone to oversee the spending of the group that went to Altlanta." He took a stack of notes and shook them. "What's going on? Did you let those women spend a lot of money?"
"Because I think those women are making the right choices in technology and equipment that will advance this city by leaps and bounds."
Harry seemed to think of David's words.
"Come, Harry. If they think spending money on all those things will be beneficial, we have to trust them."
Harry's phone rang. He glanced at the screen. "Mom."
David frowning. "Don't tell me anything about my feet..."
Harry frowned. "Is there anything else we've kept from him?"
"Mom didn't know that I broke his blue vase when I was fourteen and glued it back together."
Harry pressed the button and put the phone on the desk. "Hi, Mom. There's David here too."
"Well, good." Luisa Booker's melodious voice filled the room. "Hello, David."
"Hi, Mom."
"How are you, boys?"
"Lumayan" said Harry
"Healthy and happy" David said
"How are you?" said Harry
"My kids' kangen. What should a mother do to be visited by one of her sons?"
"We will definitely visit" Harry promised.
"You always say that. David, I dreamt of you last night. In my dream, you were injured."
David shook his head. The woman's instincts are accurate.
"It's fine, Mom," Harry replied. "He just wanted to admit he broke your blue vase when he was fourteen and put it back in glue."
"Thank you very much" David said.
"Ah, I already know," chirped their mother. "How is Happiness progressing? He said there was a group of women coming from Virginia."
"Yeah" said Harry, unable to remove the sarcasm from his voice. "That's why we're so busy."
"Is there a suitable partner for my children?"
"No," said Harry and David in unison.
Answer too soon? David wondered again. "But now we have a doctor" he added. "And we're building a clinic."
"It's nice to know that I don't have to worry about doctors when I get back to Happiness" she said. "I can't wait for that day to come."
David waited for Harry to say something, but as silence stretched, he opened his mouth, "We can't wait for that day either, Mom."
"Go back to work, boys. I love you guys."
David grabbed the crutches and stood up. "I have to go. I still have to sort out the water heater problem and I will also supervise the installation of giant garden divider poles that can't wait to be planted by the women."
"David?"
David looked.
Harry patted his hair with his fingers, then sat down on the side of the desk. "I'm beginning to wonder if we can still make all this happen."
David stunned. Harry asked for his support? He struggled to find words. "Of course we can. We're gonna rebuild the city and bring Mom home, just like we promised."
"It seems like it's still a long way away."
David was looking for a similar situation that they both could understand. "It's the same as when we were on duty. You mustn't be discouraged thinking about war. You just have to face the battles one by one."
David waited for Harry to say it was full of nonsense or to make a typical insulting comment about a brother.
Yet...
"You're right" Harry admitted. "The Booker family never back down when it comes to challenges. We'll be able to handle it." Then he straightened up and nodded towards David's cast. "How's your leg?"
"Don't hinder my movement.not really."
"I noticed that blonde Hailey was interested in you. Did something happen?"
David felt obliged to maintain a reputation as a female conqueror and did not want to admit that he was more interested in getting a real kiss from the Little Doctor Ma'am. "Maybe. My choice remains open. How's yours?"
Harry grunting. "I'm not looking for a woman."
"You always say it like that" David said with a big smile, then he left the office. But after getting outside. He grimaces.
It was comforting to see Harry not confident, even if only for a moment. Only now did David realize how much he relied on his older brother as a living compass, especially since their father died. Harry carried a pile of responsibility on his shoulders. They deal with infrastructure development and an economy that can build or even tear down generations.
David swallowed with difficulty. For months, the construction had been time-consuming, but the day jobs had distracted him from the big picture of what they were trying to achieve. When thought of in its entirety, the mission of rebuilding the entire city turned out...
Frighteningly.
She wouldn't even dream of trying it without her brother. Knowing that Harry felt the same way, his confidence increased but he also felt anxious. Suddenly he felt a duty on his shoulder. Perhaps this depressed feeling was experienced by everyone here.
David drives one of the ATVs to the dormitory to consult with the plumbers who inspect the hot water system. Unfortunately, there is no short-term solution. Hot water will remain scarce and he knows it won't help in convincing Kendall to stay. He walked into a room that had been converted into a temporary practice for Kendall and saw with a feeling of surprise that four of his workers were sitting on benches lined up in the corridor.
"Why are you here?" tanyakanya.
"The wound was razor-shaved."
"I got a hammer."
"Lack pain."
"Robaldry."
David sighed, took out his wallet and started picking up some paper money. "It's twenty dollars. Go back to work. And let everyone know that my offer to pay for a break to see a doctor is over. Don't come unless you're bleeding or someone's peeling, okay?"
