Sarah was silent to the voice of her father who almost did not reach her ear.
"I just came to see you, and if I may I'd like to see my granddaughter..." He continued with a wrong attitude, stealing glances at Sarah who was still staring at him unblinkingly.
"I've asked your father for permission to meet you once, and I've also asked your husband for permission to talk to you, before I go back to Canada tomorrow." Sarah's father said, trying to smile back.
Sarah's heart was really so sad to hear that a father had to ask permission from others to meet his son, but what could he say, he simply swallowed his own saliva with a chest that felt increasingly tight as if it was being squeezed by a boulder.
"Canada? tomorrow's? " Sarah's lips are trembling.
"I understand very well that you can never accept Dad. It's okay.really dad's okay. Just seeing you is enough. Making sure you're okay, that's enough." Sarah's father's voice sounded bitter.
Sarah could not say anything. Only her eyes could not see her father's changing face.
All the questions he always designed if God gave him the opportunity to meet his father seemed to just disappear.
In his head, the figure of the father who had left him was a heartless evil man. Of course, the figure he portrayed for decades, is a criminal.
But, what was now before his eyes, was far from his shadow. He was a man who was close to talking to him so much that he looked down and not nearly a single question from his lips was able to really answer.
"I've been here almost three weeks, unfortunately I wasted my time in vain because I was so cowardly, I didn't have the courage to meet you. But longing sometimes overcomes fear and guilt. I don't have much time.Seeing you for just a minute feels like enough. If you can't forgive your father, I don't blame you one bit." Sarah's father seemed desperate, all Sarah's reactions were so cold that she didn't even say much, just asking questions after questions that she herself couldn't answer.
When the cafe waiter came, asking what menu to order, Sarah remained unmoved. He was just trying to digest everything his father said without being able to understand why he was completely abandoned by his father.
"No. We may not order anything else...We'll be leaving soon. Just give me the bill." Sarah's father loosened his face for a moment at the bewildered waiter looking at the two of them alternately, then hesitantly left the number 5 table.
This middle-aged man was almost half an hour sitting restlessly and just ordering a bitter, unsweetened coffee. And after meeting the person she was waiting for, she seemed to lose all hope, the cafe waitress could only shake her head, she might be put to death by her lover, she said, that's what's on his mind.
Sarah's father stood up, it seemed like he had to leave, he didn't feel that his son wanted the meeting any longer.
"Thank you for meeting you, Sarah..."Sarah's father stood up, with his face bowed, two clear feathers falling down again at the corner of his eye.
She was grateful to have at least met her son, and she knew he had been very happy in his life. To have a good and well-off husband, to have a child. There is really nothing to regret in life anymore.
Although, perhaps he would bear being hated by Sarah his entire life, he no longer regretted it.
Via, I've met our son, he's fine...
She looks so much like you, she's beautiful and very strong, just like you.
Somehow he's been through life without us, but he's really, really fine.
Via, when I come back to you later, I can say this with a smile.
For a moment Sarah's father stood staring at the top of Sarah's head, while Sarah herself did not turn her face, her gaze empty and straight.
"Goodbye, son.thank you..." Sarah's father's voice trembled saying these words. This was probably the first and last time he met Sarah.
Multiple myeloma, which has been detected in plasma cells in the spinal cord, was diagnosed in stage four, and was only discovered when he suffered a fracture in his left arm two months ago.
The disease cannot be cured and Sarah's father does not expect to be cured. There is nothing else he wants to fight for in life.
He rejected the advice for chemotherapy in order to undergo a stem cell transplantation, because he knew it was only a temporary delay in the development of cancer cells that had spread almost throughout the bones in his body.
The sins of youth may indeed be paid for in old age, many years later after we have aged. He realized all the past pleasures had to be paid off later on. In the afterlife God may count our worship but in the world we still have to meet karma.
Taking care of her with care is an option for Sarah's father, therefore he chose not to try to fight the disease that is now being suffered.
He'll be back in hiding almost half his age, in a small Canadian town. No one was waiting for him except for a Siberian dog named Choky. He had lived with a woman for several years, unfortunately he decided to separate from her because he could never completely forget Viani from his life.
Sarah's father moved, she turned around before her other tears would fall, but just before she stepped away, a touch in her fingers, cold and slightly trembling.
"Dad.." The hand held his right hand, like a frightened man left.
Sarah's father was stunned, he was glued to his place, it felt like he was dreaming of hearing father's call in his ears.
"Dad.I beg you not to go again..." A hug on his back felt warm, so warm it even felt to his heart.
Sarah's father was completely transfixed, she did not move like a statue, on her back a sobbing was heard while the white arm hooked, holding her firmly.
Sarah's father's eyes were closed, the tears she had blocked earlier finally spilled on her cheeks. The taste of blue made him barely able to breathe.
All his life he had dreamed of a little baby girl crying in his cradle 27 years ago, calling him "father"
