Although not spoken to directly, Rey added a comment there - here to support Jason's words. Whenever that happened, Kikan would smile politely at Rey to appreciate her comments, but Kikan's attention kept glued to their child, and it made their situation comfortable. Until the bill comes, Kikan is forced to reprimand Rey, for trying to snatch the bill paper from the corner of the table.
Fortunately, Kikan managed to take it first. He wouldn't let Rey buy him food, buy him anything. It's a matter of self-esteem, even though the self-esteem it still has is so small. While inviting them, Kikan added that he would pay for their food. Because if he doesn't, maybe Rey will believe Kikan is looking for him to get something out of him, in addition to permission to see Jason. But it's not like that at all.
"I don't mind," said Rey, as if unsure whether to press or not while Kikan spent the money.
Even with the tips to give, Kikan's money was still enough, thank God... "I'm the one who signed, but I appreciate your offer" he said firmly.
After paying, Kikan walked out of the cafe.
"The breakfast was good" Jason said.
Hope and happiness invaded Kikan, when he saw Jason seemed happy with their meeting. The road ahead of them will not go smoothly, but Kikan managed to have his first breakfast with Jason without having to feel shattered. Maybe he was helped because all this time had experienced a lot of disappointment. He hopes their next meeting will be even easier. And so on, he had to start.
"I'm glad you like it" he said.
Although Kikan had a slow path in order to walk behind, Jason and Rey were waiting for him to get ahead of them. Kikan had no vehicle, and that meant he had to walk three kilometers to dry land that his mother had inherited from her parents.
Once they were outside the cafe, Kikan stepped aside so they could pass by and walk towards the parking lot. "Thank you for seeing me."
Rey squinted from the rising sunlight, and looked around. As if asking, and looking for the vehicle that Kikan used. "What are you going home for?"
"What have you dealt with?"
"Are we not talking about going home?"
"Then someone picks you up?" When will they arrive? Do you need to use my phone? "
Now that she felt pressured, Kikan had to tell her the truth. He does not need the phone offered, because no one will call. "No need to trouble anyone. It's sunny today, I want to go home on foot."
Rey glanced at the rope slippers Kikan used. "You can get home with sandals like that?"
Kikan smiled awkwardly, "I was able to get here" he replied. "This slipper is pretty comfortable." Right or not it doesn't matter. It's just the sandals he has.
Rey looked unsure, but Kikan waved and turned around to leave, and the man started walking towards the pickup. Jason called him.
"Mom?"
Kikan's heart was pounding violently in the chest. Jason had never called her by any mention, let alone Mom. Kikan did not expect to hear the boy use the call, not so soon, especially since he had allowed Jason to call him whatever made him comfortable. "Yes?" Let's just hope his voice doesn't sound too choked in Jason's ear as he himself heard it.
