Steel Empire

Steel Empire
Headed to Innsbruck

After the successful siege of Schwaz and its stable occupation, Berengar waited several days for rest and supplies. Now that he has effectively eliminated enemy forces between Kufstein and Innsbruck, he can build a stable logistical network to supply his war effort that will go a long way in establishing dominance in Tyrol. No matter how strong his troops were, if they were to be cut off from the supply, it would only mean their death; therefore, if they were to be cut off, it would only mean their death, Berengar and his troops waited in Schwarz for several days to fully supply their troops and garrisons before moving on.

During this time, Berengar was well watching his troops and making sure they behaved in a civilized manner. Prisoners of war were given proper treatment, and civilians were allowed to live their daily lives without interruption. As long as there was no armed resistance, Berengar would tolerate their protests. When the citizens take up arms to attack his Garrison, they will be allowed to use deadly force. It was effectively communicated to the natives, and although there was some civil unrest, it was especially peaceful.

Despite Berengar's reputation for advocating for the welfare of the common people, he was still considered a foreign invader in the Viscounty of Schwaz. Thus, there was naturally a level of resistance to his work. Even so, it never got out of control. Berengar therefore never cracked down on him during his title. Sometimes people need to vent their frustrations civilly, and Berengar knows this well. His order for the garrison was to establish friendly relations with the locals and only use violence to maintain authority as a last resort. It was a completely different job than usual in this world, and the initial resistance had already begun to subside by the time Berengar left.

To defend the territory properly, Berengar left behind a small artillery unit, a total of three field guns and artillery pieces needed to operate it. News must have spread by now about his siege of Schwaz, and it would most likely attract his enemies to march into the City in an attempt to break his siege, unfortunately for his enemies, he said, if they decided to march to Schwaz, they would meet a fully-controlled city with three field guns mounted on it, and 800 men with rifles defending the fort.

Finally, his army was fully supplied, and his army was ready to march on Innsbruck; therefore, Berengar once again rode his mighty horse Erwin before standing at the commander-in-chief of the army; he looked at his troops with a smile on his face before declaring the order they had been waiting for.

"For March!"

Thus an army of over 4000 men set out from the town of Schwaz as they set out for their destination, which was the heart of Tyrol, where they would engage in another fierce battle to dominate the region. As the soldiers marched, the band's voice echoed in the cold winter air, and the men began to sing the lyrics of other marching songs. The sight of thousands of soldiers setting out through the city gates to the snow-capped Alps as they sang marching songs could be observed by the Schwaz people as they stared at the departing soldiers with complicated expressions.

In the middle of winter the Berengar army marched with excited expressions on their faces; the cruelty of war did not make them despair, but rather their great victory and the strength of the weapons and tactics they possessed managed to lift their spirits, knowing that they were able to effectively encircle the city, and its castle with minimal losses.

"My lord, if I may ask, why are you always the first to get involved?"

Berengar's pleasant smile turned into a satisfied smile after hearing those words before speaking his mind.

"A commander should always lead by example!"

It was a noble response that made Eckhard love his Lord and Commanders more. Of course, that was only part of the reason Berengar dove into the battlefield at the first chance he got. Just like Alexander from ancient times, Berengar was not only good at war but really enjoyed it. The adrenaline that he felt as arrows and bolts were released at him, the sweet scent of gunpowder filled the air as his soldiers shot at the enemy, and the excitement he felt as he fought for his life against a skilled opponent. These are things that cannot be replicated anywhere else in life.

To be honest Berengar had no idea when he was starting to enjoy fighting; it was not something he enjoyed in his past life during his tenure in the US Army. But he did not feel guilty about it; after all, Berengar never once declared himself a righteous man. In fact, if heaven really existed back then, he knew he would not see his pearl gate. Yet he did not care about life after death; after all, he had already died once, and all that was presented to him was the opportunity to achieve great things in this second life. So Berengar doesn't concern himself with subjective things like morality, he has a war to win, and if he's going to war, he might as well have fun.

History will not write about this hidden side of Berengar's personality, as he and his descendants will eventually write history books. Berengar knew that future generations did not look upon warlords, and conquerors, especially those who enjoyed bloody warfare. Instead, the history books would recognize him as a kind-hearted King who rose on the occasion to unify the German-speaking region in a time of great turmoil and civil strife, a man who always paid attention to the interests of his people, a man who always paid attention to the interests of his people, and most of all, leading the German people into a new era of progress and prosperity.
