With the death of the inquisition, a gloomy atmosphere enveloped Kufstein Castle. His family was not immediately aware of the fact that Berengar had just slapped the Church in the face and denied her authority on his family's land. Adela was the first to learn of such a thing; after hearing the sound of gunfire from outside, she rushed to the Great Hall, where she checked to see if Berengar was unharmed. When he arrived, he witnessed the scene of Berengar clutching Father Antonio's shoulder and staring at the priest with a cold and murderous gaze. Adela was not used to the cruel expression on Berengar's face, as she had never witnessed his anger. This was not the gentle smile and loving eyes she showed to her loved ones. Rather than the heartless gaze of a vengeful tyrant who was happy to punish his enemies. She had never seen such a Berengar side before and as a very devout Catholic, Adela was worried that Berengar had done something unforgivable.
However, he would never have guessed that Berengar had executed two priests on his page. When he looked out the window to see what had happened, he was horrified by the bloody chaos left over from the Inquisitor's execution ground. He could not help his fear and screamed as he stared at Berengar's merciless display of authority. When Berengar heard the screams of his fiancee, he looked at her in shock; and wondered why Adela was there at any given moment. This was not something he intended to witness by the young girl. In her anxiety, Adela quickly ran to Berengar and Father Antonio and asked why such a terrible sight had occurred.
"Listen, what have you done!?!"
Berengar was well aware of Adela's deeply religious nature and never really talked to her about her views on the matter. After all, he was afraid that he would react badly to his thoughts about the Church. However, he could not lie his way out of this one; he had just executed two Vatican envoys in his own courtyard. Therefore, he put on a stern expression and scolded the little girl for recklessly making assumptions.
"The church conspired against me and helped my brother in his efforts to usurp my birthright. These men came here as part of my brother's last tactic of getting me convicted as a heretic and executed. They even threatened to destroy my family's land when I refused to acknowledge the validity of their so-called investigation. So I executed them. Isn't that right, Antonio's father?"
Berengar gave the Inquisitor an oppressive look which implied that if the Priest did not confess his crime, Berengar would make him suffer the same fate as a corpse torn in the lower courtyard. The truth is that despite being a great torturer, Antonio is a cowardly man who is very afraid of death. Because of this, the inquisitor quickly collapsed and confessed the Church's crimes to Adela.
"What Berengar said is true... Lambert, when sponsored by your Local pastor, petitioned Bishop Innsbruck to request an investigation from the Inquisition into allegations about Berengar's heretical views. We know the accusation is false but fear Berengar will not do so. following the will of the Church. So, we plan to frame and punish him. What we'll do if he allows us to investigate the charges against him."
Adela was shocked to hear this news; throughout her life, she viewed the Church as a beacon of hope and viewed them as mediators of truth. Yet these men had conspired against Berengar to install a puppet in the seat of power in Kufstein. It was as if the shadow he had in mind of the perfect church had collapsed around him as he listened to the evil priest confess the evil he had committed. He could tell the man was telling the truth, even if it was under pressure.
"My sweet Adela, I know you are faithful, and I respect that, but men rule the Church, and no man is free from corruption. As long as you have faith in Christ and follow his teachings, you will be a good Christian woman. "
Father Antonio could not help but mutter the word "Blaming!" under his breath. However, as he did so, Berengar looked at him sharply, and the man instantly closed his trap. After hearing Berengar's words, Adela wanted to know more about his views on Christianity; however, she was, he realized that he was currently very busy and decided to meditate on his words while praying to God about which path to follow. After thinking about it for a while, he looked at Berengar with his shining sapphire eyes and thanked him for his comfort.
"Thank you, Berengar; I don't know what I'd do without you..."
After which, the girl broke free from her embrace and returned to her room. There are a lot of things he has to think about and prepare for. He knew Berengar's actions would incite the wrath of the Church, and therefore, he wanted to protect her to the best of his ability. So he started writing letters to his father, who was currently at his castle in Graz and telling him about recent events in Kufstein. He would remind him to respect the terms of their alliance with the von Kufstein family if such action was necessary.
Berengar remained with Father Antonio and continued to radiate his authority while in the presence of the priest.
"If I see you or any other member of your evil order entering the boundaries of my family's land, I'll make you and the like look! Is that understood?"
Father Antonio almost fouled himself in fear at this moment. He had witnessed the power of the rifles as their volleying shot destroyed the bodies of fellow Inquisition members. He has no intention of returning to this godless land and will make sure to warn the other members of his orders to avoid Kufstein in any way. With his departure, Berengar had usurped absolute authority over this Barony which consisted of around 20,000 people and now reigned supreme.
