Steel Empire
Siege of Vienna

Currently, Prince Lothar was sitting in his siege camp outside Vienna. While the defense forces and opponents threw stones at each other through their trebuchets, Count Lothar sat behind his troops, safely watching the progress of the siege from afar. Right now, the siege towers were once again trying to reach the enemy formation walls; unlike Berengar's efforts at Tyrol, this was an actual medieval siege in every way. The prevalence of firearms has not been widespread in Europe outside Berengar's forces. Thus, the crossbowmen hid behind the ramparts and paving similarly as they shot at each other from an engagement distance of just over 300 yards.

Looking at the siege tower towards the location, next to the man with the stairs, the defense forces focused on taking down the invaders. Among the fortresses clad in full plate armor was the eldest son of Duke Wilmar, Gautbehrt, who personally led the effort to defend the city walls. Although the siege lasted for weeks, the invading forces had only just begun to make progress in their efforts to pass through the great wall of Vienna.

With an armed sword in hand, Gautbehrt stood along the fortress as a moral act, as the siege towers were within range to unleash their hordes; he would begin to cut them down. Shortly thereafter the first siege tower dropped its bridge onto the fortress allowing Count Lothar's troops to cross into the city walls quickly. Gautbehrt collided with enemy forces along with some of his allies. A chaotic melee broke out between the defenders and the opponents in some part of the wall.

Gautbehrt deflected the approaching punch before gripping his blade in a technique called half-sword and precisely thrusting his sword into the gap between the shoulder guards of the enemy man-at-arms. Although it was not enough to kill the man, it gave him a position of control where he continued to press the man forward and over the edge of the wall, where he quickly fell to his death. Even before Gautbehrt could catch his breath, another attacker rushed towards him with a mace in hand, which he swung desperately to Gautbehrt, whom the assailant identified as the enemy commander.

Quickly dodging the attack, Gautbehrt flipped his sword and repeatedly struck the man's skull with his handle; after several strikes, the man collapsed with his skull bumped from blunt force trauma.

Gautbehrt shouted to his troops because of the sound of the ongoing massacre

"Hold line! We have to defend the wall!"

Thus, the defenders of the city of Vienna fought with all their might to defend the city walls against the invading forces. Unfortunately for the defenders, they were not as well equipped as Count Lothar's army. Many of the men inside the garrison wore a more primitive layer of plates on top of hauberk jackets and gambeson jackets. Their helmet is essentially an open face bascinet with mail aventail, and their limbs are left unprotected or protected by a combination of splint and plate protectors.

Compared to the soldiers of the Lothar army, who were covered from head to toe in a mixture of brigandine and plates, the defenders had more open areas where they could be severely injured or even killed. After several hours of bloody struggle, the defenses of the City walls began to collapse, and the defenders of the city dared as they were on the verge of defeat. Eventually Gautbehrt was forced to give orders to his surviving men.

"Retreat! Back to the Castle!"

With that, the once valiant defenders of the city escaped from the wall and ran back to the Castle for the final defense. Leaving the city to take Count Lothar and his army. Immediately after taking the wall, the attackers opened the gates and let the rest of the army enter the city, where a combination of looting, rape, and murder began to occur as the soldiers under Lothar's command began to storm. city because of its value.

Armed soldiers killed those who resisted, women and girls were taken from their homes and vandalized by the invaders, and entire parts of the city were burned to the ground. It was truly an uncivilized time to fight, and the once proud defenders of the city could only watch from the top of the Castle as their city was lit from below. Pray to God that some form of relief will come soon, or even they will suffer at the hands of Count Lothar.

Count Lothar stared at the scene of his troops storming the city with an evil smile; while drinking from the wine cup, a messenger came to report the situation from the frontline.

"My Liege, the City, has been captured, Gautbehrt and his men have fled to the Castle where they currently survive. It will take some time before we can break through its gates and actually claim Vienna as our own. What's yours?" orders?"

Count Lothar said in an absolutely cruel voice as he stared at the envoy.

"Continue storming the city; I want to see how long the defenders can hold out seeing their precious capital being ransacked."

"As you command, My Lord!"

With that said, Lothar continued to stare at the flames that began to spread throughout the city and the screams of the victims of his troops. Soon, Vienna would be his, the Duke's family would be his hostage, and he would be able to force the old bastard to abdicate and place him as the new Duke of Austria. Once that happened, he would deploy his troops and end Berengar's small rebellion. Everything went well.

After arriving inside the security of the Castle walls, Gautbehrt cursed loudly as he took off the large basket and threw it into a corner in anger.

"Damn it!"

When his commanders saw his reaction, they could not help but ask what they should do now that they were trapped in the City Castle.

"My lord, what are we going to do now?"

Gautbehrt let out a heavy sigh in an attempt to calm his nerves; after a moment of deep breathing, he opened his eyes, and with a serious expression, gave an order.

"We will wait until reinforcements arrive; now, my father is aware of Count Lothair's betrayal and has sent an army to lift the siege. We have to hold on until then ..."

One of the commanders looked at Gautbehrt with a complex expression as he voiced his concerns.

"What about the city?"

Gautbehrt covered his face with armoured hands before saying what his troops feared the most.

"Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about that right now. May help arrive soon so they can put an end to this madness!"

Unfortunately for the City of Vienna, Count Otto's forces were caught in a blizzard in the Bavarian Alps. They cannot come to help them in the future. Only time will tell whether Vienna Castle can last long enough to gain support or whether the Duke of Wilmar's family will fall into the hands of the hapless Prince Lothair. During the siege, the citizens of Vienna would suffer greatly under the pressure of Count Lothar's forces, but that was the price of the war.
