Shortly after, the phone rings back. I answered him politely. This time I knew there was someone on the other side. But not to talk. I heard her breath.
'yeah! In the morning I got a phone call like this. Make badmood!' my gertutuku then hang up the phone.
The phone rings back.
That number again?!
"Silent mel! This isn't the first time you've been able to call a prank like gini!" I encouraged myself
I answered the call
"Hello big brother." This time someone answered but little boy. The giggling voice of a child.
"Yes, Brother. Can anyone help you?" much
"You buy" said the boy again.
"Is your mom or dad home?" my many.
"Emm. nothing. Papa is working away. Mama's gone again"
"Sik, you wait for papa mama first huh. You will tell your mother what you want. Brother will help." persuade me.
"Yes" he said.
"When did you hang up the phone?"
As I was about to turn off the call, the boy called back.
"So let's play." take the kid again.
I sighed, "Sik, big brother can't keep you playing"
"Why? Ello's good at hiding, so let's play!"
"Nobody's working, so you can't play." I'm starting to lose patience.
"If you don't work, can you play ?" ask again.
"Can't be too. This brother is very busy." I replied again a little ketus.
"If that's what Ello wants to do for you."
'what can you do for me, little boy?! if you want to help quickly turn off the phone and don't call again!' my grumbling in my heart.
"If you want to help. You have to get big first and help out."
She's quiet.
When I was about to hang up, he called me again for the umpteenth time.
"Sister. Candy's good. I want to go again" he said, surprising me
Huh huh? The candy? When did I give him candy?
The boy laughed. I thought of the boy in front of the station.
No way?!
"Not cold, huh? I saw big brother's toes all wrinkled up." he said with a giggle.
Instantly the cold air crept from my toes all the way to my neck, freezing me speechless. While cold sweat dripped from my temple.
The voice that had sounded far away. Now it sounds very close. It's like he's here in this room. Below. my desk..
Curiosity prompted me to look under the table. But fear held me back. Afraid to find something. Afraid to see something.
Finally, I ventured to peek under and ..
There's nothing.
I leaned back on the chair sighing in relief. Until ..
"sister! " He called me again.
I just realized that the call is still connected.
"I hold his feet, let it warm. Can you?"
At that moment I felt something touch the back of my foot. Cold as ice.
The room suddenly quieted. Everyone looked at me confused.
"What's up, Mel?" Ask Mr. Boby, my boss is approaching me.
"There's.it's.." I wanted to say it but the voice faltered. My breath is irregular.
I looked back at the empty space under my desk. There's nothing.
Boby's sir is still looking at me waiting for an answer. I took a deep breath.
"There's a cockroach." Finally that word came out of my mouth. That's better. I don't want to fret my co-workers with something 'unclear'.
"Cockroaches? The hiii? Whereabouts? Whereabouts? " Kiki, one of my coworkers who hates flying insects, panicked and jumped on a chair.
Jho who was right next to him hit his head. "So the guy's afraid of cockroaches! Shamefully embarrassed!"
"Everybody can be afraid of cockroaches. It's normal to know. A girl who can!" He defended himself.
"Udah! Already! Don't fuss! Go back to your respective places!" Mr. Boby dispersed the crowd.
"What are you doing, Mel?" T
ranyanya while helping me stand up.
"Yes sir." I replied.
"Want a little break ?" he said again offering.
"No need sir. I'm just shocked." I replied while trying to smile.
After making sure I was okay, Mr. Boby went back to his place to monitor the staff of other employees.
"Want me to get you some water?" Tanya Sofi offered.
"Thank you." I'm nodding. My knees are still limp. I pressed the offline button to reject the incoming call for a while.
"Are you sure it's okay?" he asked back while giving me a glass of water. "It seemed like it wasn't an ordinary cockroach" he said anxiously, looking at me suspiciously.
"I'll tell you later." I promised her that I and Sofi were close enough because they often get the same shift.
"okay." Said Sofi understood.
We continued our work as usual until lunchtime.
Once I dialed back the weird phone number. But can't be contacted. Wrong phone number. Or unknown phone number. That's what the operator said. Leaving me in a big question mark.
"Is it possible to just call?" ask all of us at the dinner table after hearing my story.
Me, Sofi, Neni, Molly and Lea are lunch mates together. We sat in the cafeteria and enjoyed our lunch while telling stories.
"That's possible. Someone on the inside might be working on it." said Molly.
"But what about the candy?" deny Neni.
"Oh come! It's not just Melya who's riding the train!" The rebuttal, "could be one of the guys in the office saw Melya giving the candy to a kid and wanted to make it a joke to work on it."
"And that phone number..?" reply Neni again attacked. Me and the other kids watched both.
"The age is sophisticated. And everything can be changed. Especially those related to computer systems. And our boys in the office are experts at it." - Molly.
He is a more rational person. Not that he does not believe, he just put forward something more realistic than something abstract.
But, it seems that Neni still does not want to budge with this debate. His eyebrows wrinkled at the thought of something. Unknowingly I smiled.
"So you're saying one of our coworkers inside is trying to prank Melya?" sofi asked, reaffirming to Molly.
Molly nodded. "Did you remember ever wronging anyone on the inside, Mel?" Sofi asked me.
I'm shaking. "Not at all. I rarely talk to anyone but about work"
"What do you think, Mel? You heard it directly? So, what's a made-up little boy's voice?" Ask Sofi again.
"Looks not. The voice I heard on the phone was almost the same as the one on the station."
"Well!" Neni's voice was shocking. We all looked at him. "I remember. Long ago when our room was still a warehouse he said there was a child of one of the warehouse employees who died while playing."
"He died here ?" ask Sofi curiously. Everyone looked at Neni, waiting for his answer.
