Reina POV
When man falls into suffering, the seduction of the devil sounds sweet. Leaving common sense and logic. What was left of me at that time was not human. Just a hunk of hate fueled by anger.
I stepped inside the silent passageway of the people. Time and circumstances give us the opportunity to do so.
He himself was in the classroom. At first her expression was happy to see me, then became riled up as I continued to approach her without speaking. The expression on my face seemed to show my intentions. A cold, sharp knife that had been hidden in my bag, now I swung towards it.
The terrified roar scratched on his face became the last scene recorded in my memory, before his shout echoed throughout the hallway of the three-story building.
* * *
"Krincing!" A key fell out of my grasp. His voice woke me from a nightmare.
"Then that dream!" I flicked my bangs back and stared at the bus window. Rows of bamboo trees lined up fenced along the road that passed by this bus.
I grabbed it back and looked at it. Locker key number 13. I have never believed in superstition. Either it brings bad luck or luck. Everything is determined by how much you try, not by objects or numbers.
But it looks like this thing really cursed me. This key was left behind when I met Maiya last time. Because this thing is also the police coming to my place. It was from them that I knew the news of Maiya's death.
The police asked me when I lost the key. I can only answer not to remember. There's no way I'm saying the key dropped when I got into a fight with Maiya.
That answer is quite reasonable considering my condition which was still in a period of rehabilitation and recovery from mental shocks. Even though they knew I was lying, that key alone could not be used as proof of my connection to Maiya's death.
For a while the key was in the hands of the police until the case was over. After that, it was returned to the school. The key changes ownership. But he said whoever holds the key always gets bad luck.
The last owner of the key was a child named Riri who is currently in hospital. This key was also in my nephew's hands before he had an accident in front of his house. More absurdly, the key magically appeared in my desk drawer.
Does this have anything to do with the key? Or with the spirit of Maiya who until now has not calmed down? Eli said that Riri was possessed by Maiya's spirit. That spirit was looking for me? Wh-wh-what for?
Huh! I leaned my head against the seat of the bus that was speeding into my hometown. Everyone always comes back even if I try to run. People say the past can't be left behind forever because it's like a ghost that will follow you wherever you go.
Like that nightmare that keeps repeating itself hundreds of times, or the voice of Maiya that I often hear when I'm alone in the room. It's not that I'm afraid or believe in ghosts. I'm just tired of this almost every day.
That's why I came to this town. I will prove myself true or not the existence of Maiya's spirit. Facing it head on could be the only way to stop my recurring nightmares.
When the bus arrived at the city stop, it was late. But the road I walked was still the same as before. Nothing has changed.
I didn't tell you about my visit to my sister. What should I tell him. He doesn't want me to come to this town anymore.
From a distance I saw Eli coming out of the gate of the house, and a nun nearby.
"Eli!" I cried, speeding up my steps to approach him.
"Aunt Reina!" Eli ran with a limp approaching me. He hugged me while crying.
"What's wrong? Why are you crying? What the hell's going on? Where are your mom and dad?" many confused.
I pushed Eli gently from my embrace. " What's up, El? Why do you want to go out at night?"
"Melya called me. She said Riri disappeared from the hospital and is now at school."
"Your friend who you said was entering the spirit?" many ensure. He's nodding.
"Melya is now going to pick him up" he said again.
"Only?" seruku. If Melya is a classmate who says she can see ghosts. How dare he go alone at school. Didn't her parents forbid it?
"She said she'd ask the school guards for help. I'm worried about Riri. What if something bad happens to her? What if he can't be found?"
"Calm down, El! He'll be fine. I'm certain. I'll be there to help find him, too."
"I'm coming, bi!"
"Can't! You're still sick. The road is hard. Wait for me at home."
"Will aunt follow Melya's plan?"
"Yes, give me her phone number, tell her I agree with her plan but don't tell her I came there directly."
Fortunately Eli complied and went into the house with his nurse. Though I wanted to rest first, I was directly involved with this matter.
It's not a joke anymore. Although half my heart still could not believe that Maiya had risen again to be a spirit, I stepped confidently towards my old school building.
The school building is separate from the residential area. There was only a row of small shops that had closed. Only the closest school guard house was about 200 meters away.
Street lights blink occasionally while the moon is not visible at all. The cold air bit on the skin even though I was already wearing a jacket.
I stood in front of the school building for a moment. The three-story building that was so majestic turned gloomy at night. Only darkness enveloped the old building that was almost a century old.
The gate is open, meaning someone has already entered. Maybe that kid named Melya was inside, too. But once inside I found no sign of anyone else there. Have they all gone home?
I received a message from a boy named Melya.
"I'm ready, brother. Start talking to Maiya. Say whatever you want to say. The soul will hear it."
I immediately replied, "Where are you?"
A few minutes waiting for no reply, I started calling the number.
"You're looking for me, Maiya?" There was something heavy in my heart when I called that name.
"I'm here, Maiya! I've come to see you."
Before long the iron bars at the ends of the stairs, which had been closed slowly shifted, as if allowing myself to go up.
