The two creatures' friendship lasted for years. Thanks to Johan, Remi gained a new outlook on humans.
Remi realized that his attitude had been wrong all along. He could not strike all men down just because of one bitter experience.
But at least that regret slowly faded as the time he spent with Johan went on.
But the friendship of two races is not easy to pass. Especially from Remi's point of view.
Since their first meeting, Remi and Johan settled in Aergium for a long time. Both of them built a small business as a wine merchant.
Unexpectedly, Johan was quite experienced in trading. It is good at researching the wines they sell and also always sets the right price in the market, thus attracting customers quickly.
On his side, Remi helps Johan by thinking that this is a return for Johan's good treatment. He dedicates his life as a slave to Johan, but Johan rejects him outright.
"I've never thought you were like that" Johan said. "For me, you're a trustworthy friend."
Remi just smiled even though he was not feeling well. He felt inappropriate but if it was Johan's wish then he would accept it.
"Alright, my friend," replied Johan in human language. Johan has been teaching her for months.
Years changed, and things started to change. Johan's wine business began to show its charm in the Aergium market. A lot of people talk about it and by leaps and bounds the name Johan explodes everywhere.
Seeing his best friend successful, makes Remi happy. Moreover, when he saw Johan starting a family with female acquaintances in Aergium.
Despite being successful and having a family of his own, Johan never forgets Remi's help. He even considered Remi his brother, and his wife did not mind either.
But as we know, nothing is eternal in this world. This also happens in the life of Remi.
The short age of humans compared to demons like himself, makes Remi have to watch the departure of his best friend. Johan died of his old age, leaving behind a wife and a child.
Six months later, his wife follows his departure and leaves their son to Remi. The boy's name is Rolf. Rolf was twelve years old at the time.
When Rolf was eighteen, he decided to become an adventurer. That means he has to leave his father's legacy business and also quit Aergium to pursue his dream of traveling the world.
Remi was initially worried. Rolf is the only memory of his struggle with Johan. He wanted to hold her back, but he also didn't want to make Rolf lose his dream.
With heavy Remi releases Rolf. At that time, he thought that this might be the best option.
After everyone from the Johan family left, Remi now tries to keep Johan's wine business going. But people started to drift apart when they found out that the business was now being run by a demon.
In the end, the business went bankrupt. Remi lost everything and he ended up getting into debt here and there. And when he could not pay it off, all his precious things would inevitably be taken away. Including the relics of Johan.
Returning to being a hoarse demon, Remi is captured by slave sellers and repeats the same life as before.
Until finally he ended up in the hands of an employer who was very different from Johan. A man who is vile and only considers slaves as nothing more than goods.
Remi was thrown into confinement with several other slaves. Their races were also various, there were demons, animal humans, and there were also some lizardmen.
But there was one woman who caught Remi's attention. A demonic woman greeted him kindly as he entered the cage.
"You're the new kid, huh?" He said with a smile. "Greetings, yes. My name is Katherine."
Remi was just a little curious how the woman could continue to smile despite living as a slave. Especially in the hands of such a jerk.
After being taken to Vertrag, Remi was made into a slave worker who worked day and night without salary. He could not get any food from the work, and he was forced to scavenge into the trash to fill his stomach.
"I heard your name Remi, huh?" Katherine appeared from behind. He saw Remi who was in the dung rummaging through the garbage cans and gave Remi half his food. "Here, eat."
Remi just stared at him for a moment. It was the only food, but he wanted to share it. And moreover, he did not look shy, but gave with a smile on his face.
"T-Thank you," Remi received the food.
The two of them ate together in a shabby little alley. Although it was not a good place, but at least it was quieter than in a noisy room.
"Katherine-san," Call Remi while devouring her food with the last bite. He then continued, "Why did you share your food with me?"
Katherine. "Well, it's because you look hungry" he replied.
Remi continued, "But isn't this food good? It's hard to get, and you're sharing it for free."
"Then what should I do?" Reply Katherine. "If I wanted to take it again, would you be able to return it?"
Remi. The food was over. She thought Katherine was serious, but she was relieved to see her laughing.
"Have, have, don't panic. Just eat. I'm not serious" said Katherine with a smile. "I also gave it away."
Remi returned her smile. A smile that feels wholehearted and sincere. When was the last time Remi saw such a smile?
"I remember my mother..." Remi said in his heart.
"Katherine-san," Panggi Remi again.
Katherine. "Call me Katherine. Don't wear San" he said.
Remi nodded. He then continued, "Do you want to be my friend?"
Katherine smiled broadly. "Of course!"
Months change, and years change. Remi is getting closer to Katherine. The two of them often shared their property together and exchanged attention as fellow slaves.
Sometimes Katherine brings along a familiar friend when she meets Remi. He sometimes brings Sella and Selly, sometimes he also brings Mia and Robert.
Sella and Selly are slaves who work under a direct employer. Their job is to satisfy **** the employer. But now they have been thrown out because the employer has got a new replacement.
Mia was also dumped by her employer. Previously he worked at a dimly lit club and was often forced to serve visitors there. But the master thought that the allure began to fade and finally discarded.
While Robert was only a slave who was traded in various places. He often changes hands and only as a material outlet for anger. He was always made into a punching bag and his entire body was full of scars. He was not strong and eventually escaped.
You could say, all the people Katherine brought were homeless slaves who had no home and were starving.
"I want to help them" said Katherine. He and Remi are both in an alley where they usually meet.
Remi just looked down. He looked down at the ground with a sad feeling. There's nothing he can do. He could only share the food he had with them, and that was still less than enough.
Asking for a salary from an employer is impossible. He could have been whipped and even injured. It's the same as looking to die.
Remi was confused. He walked up to a wall and leaned his back against it. But, suddenly...
Gedubrakk! Remi's wall collapsed and he fell inside. Katherine was surprised and immediately approached her.
"Remi, are you okay?" Said Katherine while checking on Remi.
Remi nodded slowly while somewhat moaning. He did not have a serious injury, but his body became lilu.
"Oh duh," He stood up holding his waist. "You can break it, can you?" Mumbled.
Katherine looked around. "It looks like what you're sending is not a wall. But wood," he said, pointing towards the ruins of the wall.
Remi and Katherine looked into the hole the wall had collapsed. It looks like it's an uninhabited old building. Inside also grew some small plants a sign of how long this place was abandoned.
"I don't think we've been hanging out in front of an empty building all this time" Remi said as she stepped into the building.
He glanced at every corner of the room and saw that it was quite comfortable.
"Aah! Katherine, how about we get your friends to stay here?" Remi's Proposal. The idea just passed in his mind.
Katherine nodded in agreement. "Great idea!"
They both entered the building further. After wandering around for quite a while, they finally declared that the building was indeed empty. The building has six floors. Although some floors are already completely dirty and neglected.
One week later, Katherine brought all four of her friends to the building. Mia, Robert, Sella and Selly, and also a new young man who is brought in by Remi.
"Remi, who is he?" Ask Katherine.
"Name Rendi. He's a slave from the Kingdom" Remi replied introducing Rendi.
The rendition also bowed gracefully. It seems he knows very well the royal manners. "It's nice to meet you, Katherine," she said. "I am a slave thrown away by my master. I was desperate and had no place to stay. But by chance I met Remi and she invited me to come here."
He looked at Remi. "I owe you one, Remi."
Remi patted his shoulder. "Look easy. It's not just you who's in trouble anyway."
After that, they all got together and introduced themselves. And from then on, the banished slaves lived there.
Rendi also fixed the broken wall with her earth magic. Everyone there was shocked when they saw that Rendi could use magic. But Rendi said that it was just something she learned while in the kingdom.
Sometimes, after work, Remi and Katherine stopped by there to bring the food they had to share with them. Although in fact they themselves are in trouble.
They get along and know each other. Katherine did not show up for a few days.
"Where's Katherine?" Robert muttered.
Mia answered. "Yes yes. How many days he hasn't stopped by" he said. "Is he busy?"
Sella turned her head towards Remi who was sitting. "Remi, aren't you the closest to him? Don't you know something?"
Remi shook his head while exhaling. "No. I haven't seen him since six days."
"Do we have to look for him?" Selly continued.
Remi stood up from his chair. "I'll try to find him" he said. "I've been to work once. Maybe I can try looking there."
Everyone nodded and Remi left.
As soon as Remi arrived at Katherine's workplace, she didn't see him at all. Lots of people passed by, but Katherine was nowhere to be seen among them.
Remi became curious and worried. He tried to search much deeper, but he was immediately expelled by the guards there.
Remi ended up just waiting a bit far in front of the door. Wishing to see Katherine walk out that door as usual.
But after a long wait, Remi still did not see Katherine. He began to grow angry and anxious. He began to search around the place, hoping that Katherine had indeed come out of it.
Suddenly...
Kruakk! Remi heard something not far from there. Her voice was heard from the direction of the small alley beside Katherine's workplace.
He quickly went to check it out. And how surprised he was when he saw what was in front of him. A woman in half-naked clothes fell down among a pile of trash.
Remi approached him immediately. He did not know who was in front of him, and he really only intended to help.
"You okay?" Ask Remi. He glanced at the woman's face which turned out to be someone he knew.
"Katherine!?" Remi said again in a surprised tone. He immediately carried her and propped her up with his shoulders. "What's going on?"
Katherine simply kept quiet and gave him a blank look. It seemed like something big had happened, and it might have hurt her mentally.
"Let's hurry to the building," Remi continued as he walked in his arms.
Everyone was shocked when they saw Katherine and Remi arrive. Remi immediately lowered Katherine from her back and laid her down on a thin pedestal.
"Katherine? What's the matter?" Mia said hysterically.
Remi replied, "I don't know. I found him slung between the trash cans."
"Did he not have thrown away his master?" Robert's Sahut.
"Maybe-but why?" Remi Remi.
Suddenly Katherine groaned. His face looked lethargic and weak, but he raised his face and looked towards Remi with a smile.
"Thank you, Remi" he said weakly.
Remi and the others immediately turned their heads and they felt relieved the moment they heard his voice.
"Catherine..." Remi said slowly.
Katherine continued, "That's right, I just got dumped. Because I have this disease." He then showed me the part of his stomach that was starting to shrink. The color was a little pale and gave off a strange aroma.
"What's this?" Ask Remi.
Rendi immediately replied as soon as she saw the disease. "I've seen this before" he said. "I've seen someone come to the castle with a similar illness."
"really?" Remi Remi.
Rendi nodded. "Yes. He was successfully healed and returned to health as usual. When I found out, it turned out to be a rare, dangerous disease. The disease attacks the internal organs slowly and painfully. If not quickly treated, then that person would definitely die."
Remi immediately stood up straight facing Rendi with a face full of hope. "Do you think Katherine's gonna get well?"
Rendi lowered her face. "Maybe it can, maybe it can't" he replied pessimistically. "Look, the magic that can cure the disease is not ordinary magic. But special light magic that can only be mastered by certain people."
Remi looks disappointed to hear it, but he is still curious about the story of Rendi.
"His name was Lionna, daughter of King Vertrag, Lionne. She was the woman who cured the disease with her magic. At that time I was his servant, and I watched him use that extraordinary magic with my own eyes" continued Rendi. "It may be impossible for us to ask for his help. We could have been arrested for setting foot in the castle."
Remi said, "Is there no other way?"
Rendi shook her head, "I'm not sure."
Suddenly Katherine clasped Remi's hand. "Remi, don't mind me. I'm fine," he said softly.
Remi looked over with a sour face. She felt sad and anxious, but Katherine could still show her smile even in these circumstances.
"I'm sure I'll recover in a few days. This must be just a common illness" Katherine continued. "You focus on yourself. Don't let my problems bother you."
Remi slightly broke the tears. He could only hope that Katherine's words were true.
Katherine's disease is getting worse. Everyone began to notice it, even more so Remi. She interacted with Katherine most often in her difficult times.
Almost every day Remi asked her how she was. Katherine simply replied with a smile and replied, "I'm fine."
Remi knew it was a lie. Katherine's not really good. He just didn't want to make his friends worry.
Remi started asking Rendi about the light magic and how to learn it. But Rendi explained that light magic can only be used by humans.
Remi lost hope. All he could do was ask Katherine how she was doing every day. And that doesn't make things any better.
Even Katherine began not to reply to Remi's questions. Remi initially thought Katherine was upset because she kept asking about her condition, but she realized it was the illness that had left her mute.
The more days, Katherine's situation is getting more and more concerning. After losing his ability to speak, he also began to lose his full consciousness.
His gaze became blank, he could no longer move, and to the point of worsening, he began to lose his smile. It made Remi desperate.
But news began to be heard in Vertrag about a fugitive named Darren. The news spread quickly and became the subject of discussion everywhere.
To people, the news is like bad news. The fugitive who is famous for having slaughtered the Erobernesian army single-handedly with ease.
It creates anxiety in the hearts of the humans. They even began to think that the fugitive was not a human, but a monster that had the power equivalent to a Demon King.
Because of the fact that almost everyone in Vertrag knew about the news. No exception for slaves, including Remi.
He thought that Darren might have other intentions in his actions. And also, it was cultivating hope in his heart.
"If the fugitive can kill so many people, it means he's very strong. Maybe he could use light magic too!" Inner Remi. "There's hope! Katherine can be cured!"
Remi is optimistic. From that moment on, he always encouraged Katherine who was already helplessly limp. He believes Darren can help him.
Although Katherine did not respond to anything, Remi was sure that Katherine felt the same way as herself.
But things didn't go well. A few days later, one of the slaves from Remi's workplace ran away. Her name is Tora.
He ran away for fear of the punishment given by his employer. Penalty for flogging for failing to protect the employer's merchandise sent to Friedlich. Tora is declared missing and no longer found. The case was also closed.
The master eventually increased the guard on each slave and would punish those who dared to try to escape.
A few weeks later, Remi was doing his job as usual. But lately he's been thinking too much about Katherine's situation.
After work, he often sneaks out to find information about fugitive Darren. He looked for it from the newspapers to asking the slaves from different agencies.
But because of that, he was caught often sneaking out and finally brought before the employer. He was accused of giving his loyalty to others and he was immediately given a sentence at that place.
Both horns were cut. Remi groaned in pain, but the master did not care.
"Hurry and give him the slave necklace!" Shouted his master to his subordinates.
But as the men are busy searching for her necklace, Remi finds an opportunity in that state. He immediately stood up, resisted his pain, and fled from the place.
The master was surprised and ordered his subordinates to pursue.
The chase lasted until the exit of Vertrag. Remi deliberately ran out of town and did not hide in the building because he did not want his friends to be caught.
And during the chase, Remi meets his hero. The hero gave him hope.
