However, the moment the man before him opened the door of the patient's room, Raymond's entire hesitation and anxiety instantly dissipated. The man left his suitcase near the door and jumped forward when he saw Lorie lying on the bed with a breathing apparatus. There were so many medical devices attached to the woman's body.
The needle stuck in Lorie's hand and the hose that poked out from behind the patient's clothes made Raymond's eyes heat up. He stood on the side of the bed and stood there. Several times his hands were warm, as if he was about to touch the woman before him who was lying with his eyes tightly closed, but many times his hands were again drooping on his side.
The face of the woman who used to sing the cheerful smile now looked very pale and withered. Raymond felt like there was a needle stuck in his throat and made him almost choke.
“It looks like your relationship is pretty close.”
Raymond gasped when he heard a voice coming from his right side. He quickly turned his head and found Alex Smith sitting on the sofa crossing his legs. He immediately walked up to the man and saluted.
“Mr Smith, thank you very much for being willing to tell me about ... Lorie ...”
“Sit.” Alex nodded his head towards the sofa in front of him.
“Thank you.”
“It looks like your relationship is quite close,” repeat Alex while looking at Raymond closely. It was impossible for an ordinary friend to react like that. The man before him did not even look to his right and left, directly walking straight towards Lorie to the point of not being aware of her presence in the room.
Raymond returned Alex's glance at a glance, then turned his gaze to the window. He did not dare to look at Alex Smith for long, afraid that the man could uncover the secrets he had hidden from his eyes.
Finally Raymond cleared his throat softly before replying, “Not as close as you think, Sir. I'm just ... really very worried about him.”
“Oh.”
Alex was not pushy, nor did he ask any other questions, just kept staring at Raymond until he felt increasingly nervous.
“How long has he been like this?”
“Four days ago.”
Four days ... does that mean Lorie was held captive one full day before being rescued? Raymond gulped and glanced at the patient's bed. What did she experience during that one day to make her condition what it is now?
“What ... will he recover?”
“I've deployed the best medical personnel. Can recover or not, it depends on his physical condition and willingness to survive.”
Raymond sighed and restored his hair. He pressed his forehead with his palm while closing his eyes. He did not expect Lorie's condition to be like this. Suddenly he has a very strong urge to find the abductors and beat them up to feel sorry for being born. Truly trash that litters the world with evil.
He took a deep breath for some time before asking, “I ... am I allowed to accompany him until .. um, until he regained consciousness?”
Alex just silently looked at Raymond's face with a gaze that seemed to be skinning layer upon layer of his facial skin to reveal the secret of what was hidden behind it.
“I promise I won't make a fuss. It's just a kind of burden that I can't let go of .. I owe it to him,” Raymond murmured again, this time he did not take his eyes off even though Alex Smith's eyes looked like a laser beam was stripping him.
“What happened between you?” ask Alex.
Raymond almost choked on hearing that blatant question. He really doesn't know how to explain it to Alex. Fearing that if he spoke of the event, Alex would throw him out and not allow him to meet Lorie later on. If that was the case, how would he apologize to Lorie and convey that he was so sorry?
“It .. I can't say it now, Sir. But obviously, I'm not going to hurt him. You don't worry. I really just want to wait until she wakes up.”
Alex tapped his finger to the thigh and asked, “Not working?”
“It just so happens that I am on leave until the end of the month,” Raymond replied.
“So ...”
“Do you mind?”
“Of course not. Come whenever you want, but .. if Lorie comes to her senses and says something bad about you, I won't let you go. You know that?”
“Y-yes, Mr. Smith. You don't have to worry.”
“Good. I'll ask people to take care of your residence while here.”
“No need. I can—“
“Do not hesitate. Lorie's friend is my friend, her enemy ... is my enemy too.”
Raymond smiled clumsily and scratched his non-itchy head. He knew it was a veiled threat posed to him. He secretly prayed that Alex Smith would not kill him if he knew what he had done to Lorie.
