He deserves to be traumatized, Rolan thought. He doesn't doubt Jose's story, but he has to confirm whether Gladys' body is indeed missing from the morgue. This should have reached Argent's ears quickly and Marco's brand is still there. Once again Rolan realized how important the figure of Marco in the information maelstrom in Bjork.
Edgar nodded slowly at Jose's story. He did not show the slightest surprise on his face, although in fact in his heart he was quite anxious. This whole thing is fucking crazy. Black ghosts, missing people, dried corpses, and now there were walking corpses. He doesn't know what else could surprise him more than Jose's story. If there was one undead, could there be another undead?
Should he tell the police? But he has no proof. Edgar decides to find out if the body is really missing from the morgue.
Neither Rolan nor Edgar communicated this desire. They are not used to working together. Rolan usually only discussed his decision with Marco, as did Edgar.
"Maybe I was wrong" said Jose. "Maybe I saw something else that was scary and my brain gave me another picture. It's possible."
"Now you're not sure?" ask Edgar astonished.
Jose shakes. "I am one hundred percent sure of what I see and hear. But I also know this is impossible. I have to make sure if I'm wrong or not. Now we should check if Gladys' body is indeed missing. Run pushed him into the abyss. She must be dead ... uh, I mean .. she must be destroyed? Might as well. Even if by some miracle he could return to Bjork, he would not return to his morgue. If we check it out and it turns out Gladys is still in the morgue, I'm wrong. At least one thing will be clear. At least we'll know with what other creatures we're dealing with."
Rolan nodded. "I was just thinking of checking the body."
Edgar raised his eyebrows. "I am too."
The two looked at each other for a long time, wondering if they could rely on each other.
Jose tapped the tip of his foot on the floor. "Then I will leave this business to Uncle" he said, turning to Rolan. "Uncle is always with Uncle Marco. About this, Uncle must know better the way and access."
"You better get some sleep after this, Jose." Edgar frowned, not particularly fond of seeing his son involve himself in this kind of danger. "Heard you were going to accompany Garnet to Sir William's party?"
"What?" Rolan frowned. "You're going to his house?"
"Mary was invited, she asked me to accompany her." Jose smiled remembering the girl. "Don't I ever tell Uncle?"
Rolan doesn't remember Jose ever telling anything. He forget. "You shouldn't have gone there!" snarl. "You know the danger yourself!"
"What danger?" ask Edgar suspiciously.
Jose laughs. "There are police patrols everywhere. I used to go at that hour. The party wasn't too late, though. Anyway I just went to Sir William's. You remember, I used to play in that castle when I was a kid?"
Edgar nodded. "Marquis Garnet called and I've agreed, there's no reason to ban you." He looked at Jose for a long time. "How is your relationship with Maria?"
Jose buy. "meaning?"
"You accompanied him everywhere." Edgar laughing. "Honestly, there are people asking to be introduced to you. You always refused Marco's choice, so I tried my best to avoid them. But they continue to press. If you really just haven't thought about anything about marriage, I don't think there's any harm in meeting one or two of Dad's acquaintance's daughters. But if you like Garnet's son ... " Edgar shrugged his shoulders. "At least I'll have a reason to reject them."
"Is this why you called me?" Jose asked annoyed. "Uncle Marco disappeared, there was a black ghost sniffing, I just met the undead, and Dad thought of women?"
"Thinking about your marriage" Edgar corrects. "You're almost twenty-four. I married your mother when I was nineteen."
"I don't want to get married just because I'm pursued by age" said Jose flatly. "Marriage is not something that can be rushed. I will live with that person until I die, for me this is an important thing that should not be decided just because of age or because of the insistence of outsiders. Anyway, there's still a lot I want to do."
"You can do whatever you want even after you're married. Fortunately for you you were born a man, there are no restrictions that forbid you to do this and that's just like if you were born a woman."
Jose knows he's lucky. He was very lucky to be born as a man in the Argent family. It lacks nothing and has many privileges that ordinary people do not have. As the only unmarried son of the Argent family, even though he was the fourth, there were so many people who asked to be introduced to him for marriage. Many beautiful, many rich, not a few influential. But he knows they're all after his connections, eyeing his name and status. Jose is not naive, he can accept all that as a consequence of all his luck. He knew in the end that he would most likely marry one of his family's choices, a good girl from a respectable family who knew how to organize a family, the girl who knows how to shut up on all the family secrets. The girl who will be educated in Argent way.
Her three brothers did not even escape this curse. They all chose which women they liked the most from Marco's chosen list. At first even Jacob insists that he marry his wife by his own choice, and they only accidentally meet, then it is revealed that the woman is Marco's choice, who deliberately approached Jacob and made everything seem unintentional. Jacob loved his wife, so even if it was revealed, he didn't really care.
But Jose cares about these kinds of things. He can guess the end of his journey, his love story will not be studded with flowers and sugar. He probably won't have a romance, just a cold, official wedding. A polite breakfast and dinner, cold obligations in the room, boring parties he would attend with the girl, Jose could imagine every day in his future clearly. All of these are lines that are reserved for him. But it won't make everything easy. He was determined to fight while he still could, as far as he could.
"I'll see them if that's what Dad wants" Jose said in between his teeth. Marriage is not a topic he wants to discuss at the moment. "But I will reject them. You better ask your acquaintances to prepare for my disrespectful behavior."
"Jose," said Edgar, astonished at the boy's stubbornness.
Rolan watched from the side, a bit of pity on Jose. He knew that Jose had always liked Maria, even though Jose was unaware of his feelings.
Maybe now he's conscious, thought Rolan.
