Maria is looking for Jose, but the man is nowhere to be seen. He saw three of Jose's best friends: Lucas Clearwater, Adrian Marsh, and Simon Rutlan were chatting with some people. Marsh throws vulgar jokes, and some people laugh. Jose was not among the men. Maria could not ask because it was impolite for women to approach men first.
In Bjork etiquette there are very clear rules, which apply to the nobles. Women should not approach men first, but men should not come near if they do not get an invitation from a woman. Sometimes this kind of manners is forgotten on several occasions. But the Garnet Family educated Mary to stick to old habits. He could only go back to his friends. Some people have gone home. He could have gone home first. Rolan's still waiting in the car, outside. But if he comes home without Jose, obviously they will be gossip material.
Or maybe she came home first because I was upset that I had been dancing with Sir William for too long? Maria thought so, but she shook her head slowly. Jose is not a childish man.
"It was a pleasure to be the Princess of Garnet" the voice roused Mary from her daydreams. He looked ahead, only to realize that the girls were already divided into two groups. The group who stood by his side and who faced him.
Next to her is Lidya Jewel, Dave's girlfriend and Carmen Everrose. In front of them was Flora, wife of Baron Spencer. Behind Flora were four to six other girls whom Maria was not familiar with.
"Coming with the little prince but still eyeing other princes, greed can be dangerous" continued Flora.
Lidya boughtak shocked. He had often seen how the princesses and ladies attacked each other, but only this time heard such vulgar speech. Flora did not even cover her envious expression.
Maria smiled faintly. "Good night too, Lady Spencer. Speaking of greed, I know the saying that greedy people are always looking for trouble wherever they are. Luckily you're definitely not the kind you mean, are you?"
"Of course not, Princess Garnet. Don't fret. I came to give you compliments. Not all princesses are capable of chasing two men at once, usually we wait to be chased."
"See your words, Lady Spencer!" Carmen said coldly. "What slander do you want to spread? Do I have to remind you of your status?"
Flora laughed softly. "You know who's been trying to keep class differences awake? Marco Argent's. Now she's gone, and even though you're the daughter of a Count, there's nothing that sets us apart. That title is just ink on paper."
"What do you mean Marco Argent is missing?" Lidya turned pale. The only person he relies on to find Dave is Marco.
"Be careful when you talk, Lady Spencer," Carmen reminded. "I admit you actually dared to mention Argent in front of a Garnet. You know their families have been friends for a long time."
"What kind of friendship? Judging from her reaction, Miss Garnet must not have known that Marco Argent was missing?" avenged Flora scorned, more excited because some of her friends chimed in and supported her. "I heard it just now, from the men. A full day she was gone. If he doesn't come back tomorrow, the new police will move. But everyone knows how the fate of the man who disappeared without a trace in a day."
The latter remark was completely outrageous and had no tolerance, let alone being uttered in front of Lidya who had been searching for Dave for days. Lidya raised her hand to slap, but Maria held her friend's hand.
"Don't kotori your hand," said Maria gently as she stroked the back of Lidya's hand. He turned to Flora with glittering eyes. Maria stepped closer to Flora until their chests touched.
The girls surrounding them quietly held their breaths, waiting for what would happen next.
Flora was shorter than him, so Maria needed to duck when she spoke. He brought his lips closer to Flora's ear and whispered, "So you spread the news that you didn't see for yourself, didn't you know for yourself? Spencer, I salute you. You're this brave just because of a rumor that Marco Argent is missing? You think if Marco doesn't exist then your status as Baron's wife will be strengthened? Did you know that the Argent family didn't just contain Marco? Do you realize that you're talking in front of a Garnet?"
Although Mary whispered, her voice was loud enough to be heard by the girls surrounding them. Flora close her lips. His eyes were glazed over and his jaws were trembling with emotion. She turned to answer, but Mary kept her head away and straightened her body.
Before anyone could interrupt, Mary continued, "I am Mary Garnet! Even if I decided to drag Spencer out on the street and throw him into a brothel, no one would ban me. With or without Marquis Argent, that's all I can do. And you know why?" Mary straightened her body, smiling her noble. "Because I'm a noble from the moment I was born. I am not a commoner woman who rose in status because of marriage. You think we're the same? If Baron Spencer leaves you, you're nobody, Flora. But I, without any man helping me, am Maria Garnet. Princess Garnet!"
Flora gritted her teeth, but did not say anything more. He turned away, comforted by his friends.
"Am I being too outrageous?" Mary turned to her comrades, who shook their heads in unison.
"I love the part of dragging her and throwing her into the brothel," Lidya said with gleaming eyes.
"He was just jealous" Carmen said. "Everyone knows that until last year, he was still chasing Jose Argent. Seeing her coming to the party with you, she must have wanted to be nosy."
Maria nodded. Jose is known as a man who wants to be friends with anyone regardless of status. Flora is the daughter of a merchant who used to be in a relationship with Argent, making her have a greater chance of making friends with the man. But Jose ignored him. Circulating rumors that Flora tried to use cheap means to seduce Jose, but failed. Marco Argent canceled his partnership with the Flora family. Even canned fruit which is the main product of the Flora caravan is prohibited from entering Bjork. Since then Flora turned to hate the entire Argent family.
"How dare he spread false information about Marquis Argent," muttered Lidya trembling, still dumbfounded. "Basic bitch. Huh! A bitch."
"Lady," said Carmen.
"It feels good to say, just try it," Lidya said with a laugh. "Pronounced in the Southern style tastes better on the tongue. Try saying: bitch!"
Carmen tried, but only in a slow whisper. "It feels good" he admitted. "But not too often, it will become a habit."
Lidya laughs. Mary tried to laugh, though her back was bristling. He had just seen Sir William staring at him, but the gaze looked so friendly that he was horrified to himself.
A few days ago I still loved it, Maria thought. Why are you so scared now?
